  • My first footage of the 2024 silage harvest season filmed not in Cumbria but over the border in Dumfries & Galloway. A very early cut for this area (10th May). I would normally see at least one classic tractor helping out at this busy time of year but on this occasion it was a full complement of modern machines, not one over 3 years old and some still fresh out of the box!
Chopping the grass on the day was a 24-reg Claas Jaguar 860 owned by Auldgirth contractor James Rodan on only it’s 2nd day out in the fields so was a test run for both the machine and it’s operator who kindly let me have a cab ride round the fields with him.
Three of the latest range Massey Fergusons on trailer duties, a pair of MF 7S.180 and a MF 8S.245 pulling Redrock, Brougham & Kane 14-16T trailers.
Back at the farmyard a JCB 419S loading shovel and MDE folding buckrake (also owned by J. Rodan) was easily keeping up with the trailer team as it pushed up the grass into the undercover clamp.
For the eagle eyed among you (blink and you’ll miss it) there was also a MF 1755E parked up in the yard and again being less than a year old was quite easily the newest scraper tractor I’ve ever seen.
Filmed in Southern Scotland, May 2024

Hi Steve. Yes the weather was awful yesterday, up early for work this morning and it’s still at it! Pleased I got out last weekend to do some filming because I don’t think I’ll be going far this weekend! Thanks for watching, looking forward to seeing your videos too. Cheers, David.

It certainly was Alan. Had a busy but enjoyable day running around that day, not many on with the silage but plenty of field activity going on! Cheers, David.

Great video David, those are some rather fancy bits of kit! I have to say these new Masseys are growing on me, looks the part with those black rims and paired with the redrock trailer.

Thank you Jacob. Yes fancy and very expensive kit! New Masseys are very stylish, a lot different to those just a few years back especially in the cab design and your right, the black rims and Redrock certainly do look the business! Cheers my friend, regards David.

Good evening David and I see we have managed to drag you into the promise land and over the border 😂. What a great video and start to the silage season and what looks like a very well oiled team working some great kit. I really love watching and listening to these Jaguars and have to say, that the James Rodan machine also looks the part with its fancy decals. I also loved the combination of the MF 7S and the redrock trailer as they both complimented each other. Conditions looked good as they were able to keep pushing on, and although not sure how far they were traveling, but the JCB 419S certainly was kept steady. I once had a shot of a JCB 427 Wastemaster loading shovel with toe-tipping bucket and it was a fantastic loader but I do have a thing for JCB products especially as they are a UK company. Got to say that I fully agree about the MF 1755E at the end, and for me, I have never seen or operated any scraper tractor that was at least 30y/o on that job. Thanks as always David. Cheers Fraser

And a good evening to you Fraser, hope it is as nice in your neck of the woods as it is up here in Cumbria where I’m sitting in the garden watching the blackbirds while eating strawberries and chocolate ice cream! Yes I do like to flit over into Scotland when I get the chance, seems they’ve started their silage season a little earlier than those around about me. Yes a well organised team, running like clockwork and everyone knowing what they’re doing. It is a very smart Jaguar and you’re certainly right about the MF 7S and Redrock trailer, a very striking pairing. Not too long ago lead, good (not too busy) roads and an easy turnaround at the farm. JCB well up to the task pushing up all that grass on that big wide fork! That 427 sounds an interesting machine and your certainly right about JCB being a British company, been going a long time now! Yes any scrapper tractor I’ve driven has a few years under its belt, in fact I know of a few still going that were new to the farm 60 years ago. However it’s maybe now the way that new is maybe the way to go as a lot of 60s/70s tractors have now been restored hence they’re fewer and father being seen doing a days work. Great to hear from you as always, I’m hoping to get out filming this weekend but if not my next video is all edited and ready to post next week. Watch this space! Cheers, David.

Cheers, Fraser.

I know Fraser, I’m a tease! 🤣 I’m looking forward to getting home tonight for my supper, my better half is Italian so we’re having pasta (washed down with a good Italian red!) with her own secret pasta sauce recipe that’s been passed down through the generations but she adds a twist to it by adding chunks of Cumberland sausage to her sauce! And then to finish it off it goes in the oven with mozzarella and Grana padano cheese and comes out all crispy on top! If you were a bit closer Fraser you would get an invite though I doubt they’ll be anything left in the bowl! Speak to you soon my friend, take care and have a good weekend Fraser. Cheers, David.

@@davidwinthrop7077 Oh now you've done it David, the drool is running down my cheeks as your certainly in the correct part of the country for Cumberland sausage. Your a lucky man and you better make sure your other half is well looked after! You have a great weekend too. Thanks, Fraser.

Tidy kit working there but the sward is a bit light. My ride on would lift that with the stick fully forward

Ha, you’re probably not far wrong there George. It did look a light crop even though there was probably at least three rows raked into one. I know a lot of the dairy farmers go early but with the cost of fuel and contractor fees you would probably expect a bit more grass in the fields but I suppose it’s get them when you can or wait until their finished elsewhere. Good point though! Thanks for watching and your comment, much appreciated. Cheers, David.

Thanks David. I do know what’s growing under the plastic, it’s maize that was probably just planted a week or so earlier. Cheers, David.
