  • In 2008 I met the legendary tabla player Khamis Henkesh in Mohammed Ali Street. Cairo. He kindly invited me to his studio to check out his signature drums.
2012 UPDATE - Sadly Khamis has passed away and will be sorely missed. I would like to express my gratitude for the time he gave me when I met him the one time in Cairo which is documented in this video. A great drummer and hospitable person who greatly influenced many drummers and dancers. Hopefully the business will carry on and his legacy will stiil be present in Mohammed Ali Street.

This question is asked endlessly. The answer is you will pay what the seller thinks they can get from you !! Pure and simple. There are no fixed prices and what you end up paying will depend enormously on where you come from, what you look like and most importantly how you interact and do business.

I saw many manufacturers of darabukas in Cairo and could only carry a few back on the plane and I choose Mohammed El Arabi's drums as being the best. I do have a Khamis Henkesh Sombaty brought back for me by a friend which is of very good quality.
