    From 1974 until 1994, I used all kinds of paper. From 1994 until 2024, I have used Finale. I hope to continue with Finale for as long as I can, even though I own Sibelius, Dorico, Musescore. 😥😥

      as long as you continue to run the same OS without updating, you should be able to use Finale for years to come! but there may come a time where you have to switch, so it wouldn't hurt to start dipping your toes in one of the others. I've been experimenting with Dorico and like it a lot. I've used all 4 softwares and genuinely think Dorico is the best so far.

    I have this amazing paper in giant pads I ordered from Valle music in LA, which is no longer made, but had to order a whole ream to get it ($600). But I'll have enough for hopefully the next 30 years!

    What's the binding? Will it lie flat on a piano's music rack? Is it possible to remove a page more or less intact?

    • @mathewarrellin
      @mathewarrellin  18 дней назад

      @@smalin it’s a glue binding, it takes a bit of breaking in but I’ve used it at the piano myself. Removing pages can be done, I normally do this by slicing the innermost edge with a pair of scissors. Unfortunately it doesn’t have perforated pages. It’s essentially a paperback book (either 6x9 or 8.5x11 inches) so hopefully that gives you a good sense of it.

      @@mathewarrellin the large one at the beginning. I’m a composer as well and I write my sketches out. That paper looks really cool isn’t a brand or custom made?

      @@juantiobecenti2457 that’s the Archive brand. I got it on Amazon but I don’t love it. That’s why I made a custom manuscript journal 🤓

      @@mathewarrellinoh ok, I like writing chamber music on large landscape paper and I haven’t came across one that large that’s bound. I personally don’t mind skipping staves for space haha especially if it’s something like a quartet. Thanks for the response, appreciate it.

    I clicked this curious to see what you were discussing because I didn't think anyone used paper for that honestly 🫣 Not trying to be negative, I never really thought about it. I guess I assumed that somewhere in the 90's people unanimously stopped handwriting books and scores lol😋
    I know you covered that, but to me i would imagine there's nothing faster than recording the audio and decoding it later. I think every DAW can turn audio into midi at this point, and something like melodyne can do that polyphonically. I'm serious, I'm not trying to be negative, I just wanted to share my view because i agree with your points about the computer getting in the way. I guess to me recording the audio is the easiest way to keep playing first, and to you it's writing. I'm talking myself into it in the course of writing this🤣 i think I'll check your paper out lol 🙃✌️
    Edit/addendum- Hell yeah, I'll order that and give it a try! I'm always wanting to try new ways of looking at creating things🙌✌️

      haha seeing your real-time thought process throughout this comment was amazing. I believe in writing by hand, and know of many composers that do, but it's specific to the way I think about music! Sometimes, I play straight into the DAW and then use that as sort of a source of information/creativity to develop my ideas. Handwriting is actually most helpful for developing ideas, that's why I like it because when playing, I am not always quite as creative with development at the macro level. Thanks for watching!
