I loved it becoming itself again! Terry Pratchett wrote about it as an axe in The Fifth Elephant in his Discworld Series, and there's also Trigger's broom comes from the television series “Only Fools & Horses” ... I imagine there are more variations on the theme...
Did anybody else notice that the theme of May 7 crossword puzzle is also mentioned in the first paragraph of Amy Wang's article called SuperFake INC in the magazine? Was that planned?
Topic comes from the Latin topica; from Greek ta topika, literally ‘matters concerning commonplaces’ (the title of a treatise by Aristotle), from topos ‘a place’. I love learning etymology!
For more info on the Scoville scale: Originally it was a subjective test based on how diluted ground peppers had to be before 3 out of 5 judges couldn’t detect it. Since this rating is almost directly based on the concentration of capsacinoids in the pepper, in recent years we just measure the concentration directly, in parts-per-million, and then arbitrarily multiply it by 16 to align with the old scale So I guess technically the maximum possible score would be 16 million, but at that point you are just eating a solid block of capsaicin
I saw the thumbnail this morning and thought it was leatherface or something. Scared the crap out of me! Then I put my glasses on and was like "oh...yeah that's fine." 🤓
Rosalind Chao has a lot of acting credits but it’s a bit odd clueing her as being on Deep Space Nine. I would guess she’s in less than 25% of the episodes?
There are 2 main definitions of Calorie The Small Calorie, used in science, and the one mentioned in this clue. it is the amount of Energy needed to raise 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius The Large Calorie, or Kilocalorie, is equal to 1000 small calories. This is the number used for food calories
False killer whales are a species of large ocean dolphin in the genus pseduorca. They have skulls that look like an orca's, which is where they got their name, but they look more like pilot whales. A fun fact about them is that when they were first described by Richard Owen, he compared them to a grampus dolphin calling them a "thick toothed grampus", which makes for a good insult

Geez Louise. Uppish, otiosity, and nullity. If there was a "ty" ending it should have been on Uppity, not connected to otiose or null. Brutal
