This a perfect demonstration of your unique ability in RUclips woodworking. Where others are using all new material, what you can achieve with salvaged materials is remarkable. And much more relatable, well it certainly is to me. I salvaged my grandmothers old mahogany headboard and made it into a window board to match by office desk! Great video, thanks very much.
Fabulous work, Keith, and a great way to give a new lease of life to a bench that was heading for the skip in lesser hands. I can see why you were reluctant to let it go at the end 😀👍
Absolutely awesome, the stuff you're doing, recycling stuff. I do the same (though on a smaller scale, I don't have a workshop (yet)). Am in the process of building a small greenhouse out of old door frames, doors and windows. So satisfying.. One thing that would add awesomeness, in my opinion, would be to use mortise & tenon joints. They are not hard to master, with a sharp chisel and tenon saw I'm sure this is a skill you master in no time. It would add to the character of the end piece, even if you can't see the dominos or tenons (if not through tenons). Personal preference though, keep up the good stuff :)
Behind the barn I have stored some really flimsy ship-deck-style teak chairs, a too thin-boarded bench and a good garden table ... all in teak. Got them all for €40 yrs ago. You inspired me to finally get my grip together and do a Keith-transform!
Was working with iroko today making some floating shelves and it definitely looks like teak you’re using. The face grain in iroko looks very different to the grain in the teak you’re using
I once chatted to a very experienced joiner and he once needed to replace some windows on his house at a time when he was pretty broke. he had some sycamore in storage so he used that and treated it to hell and thought with regular maintenance he might get decent life span out of those windows. proved not to be the case at all he was replacing those windows within about 10 yrs. so morale of the story is the treatment doesn't radically change the nature of timber and its properties. so I think definitely treating will improve the life time but probably nothing like equalizing it to the teak. (sapele or utile would have been pretty durable and affordable option) I like chatting to joiners best training ever:) nice bench!
Very nice bench. Love the colour. As far as the teak, if you want to confirm it is 'teak teak', check the edges of any tool you used that isn't carbide. Teak has a high silica content and will take the edge of any plane or chisel in minutes. It's a lovely wood to work with but it is hard on non-carbide tools.
For getting the dominos aligned, you could've rotated the domino machine 90 degrees, using its fence for the height of the domino. If you want a little offset, you can use a piece of scrap between your workpiece and the domino machine.
Do you use a plug cutter in a normal drill or in a drill press? I tried a few times in a normal hand held drill but was not successful with that. The plug cutter wandered everywhere.
A beautiful piece of joinery Keith and the video itself felt like 'chatting with a mate in his workshop', sweet. I think your brain wasn't writing poetry, it was composing lyrics. A magnum opus entitled, 'the woodworker's blues' perhaps?
Nice project Keith, made even better with the hat and coat stand making an appearance! As I watched I thought that your extra long vice jaws were really coming into their own with holding big pieces for planing, and unlike previous videos you seemed much more comfortable with using the router now. Nice job
Pretty sure that's teak, Keith! I recently fixed my teak garden table (new steel legs, freshened up the wood by planing it down, giving it a nice coat of teak oil) and I remeber the smell of teak when you work with it, it;s pretty nice. Also the fresh look after planing: just like your boards.
Very nice bench Keith and I have to say I haven't the foggiest idea of the timber but the finished article leaves it looking super. Great video mate 👍🏼👍🏼
To the untrained eye it looked fit for firewood or a skip. Great job reclaiming it. It looks great. How many of the coat and hat stands did you start with?? You can't possibly have many left at this stage. It has to be said that you are a great exponent of the use of reclaimed wood.
I was wondering which is more impressive, how you've developed as a craftsman or as a presenter. I think it has to be a presenter, since you were always a decent maker (although now way better) but, as you said, when you started you seemed very uncomfortable. Now you seem so more relaxed and, as a result, more confident ans, well, just better at it. Thanks for sharing all of this with us. And I hope that doesn't sound patronising, as it's not supposed to! By the way, have you come across Epic UpCycling? You probably have, but if not, give it a look as I'm sure you'd enjoy it. All the best.
I have to admit I really miss working with teak. I remember years ago making £14,000 teak worktops and the client wanted them more orange so I put them out in the sun for a bit 😂. I can't imagine what they would be worth now! The only teak that I have now is a chopping board that I made a few years back. I miss the smell of it when sanding it.

You will need to sharpen your tools after planing teak as it has a very high silica content which will play havoc with your sharp edges. A truly lovely project and your parents must be over the moon.
I'm not sure why but I haven't been getting notifications about uploads from you and the wood whisperer in over a month..I didn't even realize you had been posting

Hat and coat stand appearances warm the heart
That is 100% teak! I can normally tell it apart from Iroko by the end grain. As a boatbuilder I use both 😀 nice find !!

Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Keith!! The bench turned out fantas”teak”!!!🤪🤪🤪
That is one beautiful garden bench! What a lovely gift for your parents.

Thank you Eddy
The hat and coat stands- yeah!!!! I didn't realize how much I missed them until seeing them again.
Wow! The finish on that wood is beautiful. Nice work, you’re a good son.
That lumber is beautiful and I would like all my furniture in that stain color👍🏻
Hat and coat stand posse represent !!1!1 Or something... Great job as always Keith! 🙂
Thank you!
I wish I had that in my garden. You did a great job on making that better than the original seat. Well done!
Thanks
Beautiful !!
Hi Keith, really enjoyed the build and really liked the bits to camera rather than just the voice over. Great as always.
Great video as ever . I refurbished a hammer recently. Replaced shaft and head good as new 👌 😁
Great project, Keith. In the US, finding teak is like winning the lottery.
Completely loved that video Keith from start to finish. You at your absolute best 😀😀👍👍
Cheers Leo, much appreciated

Nice to see the hat and coat stands.
Yes definitely Teak. End grain and even smell. Teak can be quite light in colour when cut and goes darker overnight.
Nice work fella!
Thank you!
Absolutely brilliant!
It turned out very nice keith 👌
Wow that bench came out amazing!

Great job! You seem to have every tool in the world too! I can only dream
I can't belive you still have more of those hat and coat stands! How many years has it been? Great build. Thanks for sharing.
That’s a stunning looking bench! It’ll last ages as well. I was surprised how good the stain looked. Well done.
Nice work. What an amazing find! Iroko or Teak, it looks great once it's revived!👍🏻
Really enjoyed this bench build, and also enjoyed your collaboration video earlier with Proper DIY 👍

That is one good looking bench. Well done
Thanks Peter
Good job , I’m from Ottawa il and I watch over the years the progress that you’ve made,

For snapped screws like that, drill round them with a plug cutter.

Lovely, I’ve done a few bits in Teak in the past. Very easy to work with! We’ll done.
Haha..love the hoodie alteration. The bench is fantastic Keith and looks like it will last for years and years. 👏🏼🌟
Thank you Mandy! ♥️
Really liked what you did with this project Keith. Cheers Rob - Brisbane Aus 👍
I remember the coat stands! All the pieces of wood you used looked great, always love the reclaim projects
that came out super nice! good job Keith.
what a lovely bench and gift ❤
What a beautiful bench you’ve made. That wood is spectacular. And a great redesign of the frame. I sure admire your wood collection.
Beautiful bench, Keith! Really fantastic work! 😃
Old wood is always more beautiful, I don't know why.
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Wow that grain pop when the teak oil was applied is insane! So pretty!!

Keith, wet/moisten the joint surfaces when using polyurethane adhesive. You’ll get better adhesion and stronger joints. Truth.

I made an electric guitar from what turned out to be teak from my brother's garden. You can barely lift the thing!
Definitely real teak, nice build but beech dominos are no good for outdoor use you should have got the sipo/utile ones
Yeah I figured as the joint would be sealed with pu glue it should be fine but not best practice. Last time I made my own oak dominos!
