    We are in the process of learning Scandinavian turn shoes and were hung up on skiving. Soon we will have the new instruments. Thank you 🙏

    That was really helpful. I do a lot of my own tanning and less leather working, but I'm always trying to learn. I was thinking about making one a lot like your wide one there, but I already have one almost exactly like your 3/4 inch version, which I made from a file years ago. Now I just need to work on my technique. It's great to watch someone who knows what they're doing, thanks!

    Hello Lisa,
    I started with the first skiver!
    Now I am using #3 with a straight, sharp angle, i also cut my leather with it.
    In future I will try 4 and 7.
    Nice bracelet!
    Kind regards, Hans

    I really like your weekly videos. Since I am a saddler I do most of my skiving with a round knife. I could not do the small intricate skiving you do with a round knife though. I trained under an Englishman and skiving to me means sloping off, not doing what you are suppose to be doing. If you skive you can see that slope.

    Thanks, I learned a lot.
    I work in the pipe organ repair business, where there is a fair amount of skiving for the leather on bellows.
    Some is about 1oz cow (ribs or folds) and the gussets (corners) are soft sheep. In the old days I used a 6" narrow flexible vegetable knife.
    In recent decades, a single edge razor, cutting on a thick sheet of glass. Not perfect, but some of the sheep or goat is almost like cutting chewing gum and it takes many blades to do a large bellows (reservoir)

      +Lisa Sorrell no problem! The first skiving tool I bought was the one you said to throw away. I can't agree more, I've never been able to do anything with it, lol! I'll get a proper tool and try again according to your example. Thanks again!

    How do you sharpen your knives?

  • @dansemagia
    @dansemagia 10 лет назад +1

    Thanks for the demo, Lisa. I have a question: Can you describe the sharpening of these knives, and especially the angle of the knife edge, the secondary bevel, and if it is totally flat on the underside, or if it is beveled on both sides? That would be greatly appreciated! I will check your website for purchasing these. Thanks!
    Nathan

      Nathan,
      The primary angle of the knife is 20 degrees, and I'm really not sure what the longer, secondary bevel is. The knife is beveled on both sides so that it will skive either pushing or pulling, and right or left handed.

      Lisa Sorrell
      Thank you for the quick reply, Lisa. That answers my questions! I was hoping it was beveled on both sides for the reasons you mentioned. Do you have the 1" in stock now?

    • @customboots
      @customboots  10 лет назад +1

      ***** Yes, I try to keep both the 3/4" and the 1" in stock all the time.

    Thanks for this! May I know why you skive those intricate designs ? Is it because you want to fold and sew them ?

    • @customboots
      @customboots  5 лет назад +1

      No, it's because I don't want them to be all bumpy.

    I don't think I'd be able to skive with (or sharpen) a round knife!

      Lisa Sorrell sorry what type of steel so you use

    • @customboots
      @customboots  6 лет назад +1

      For the knives? I don't know--I have them made in Japan, and I don't know enough about steel to ask intelligent questions.

    • @dirtmcgirt44

      Hopefully Japanese blue steel or super blue steel
