Functions of Placenta Part - 2 in English | Nutritive & Enzymatic Functions | Nursing Lecture
Placenta plays a very important role in the following-
1. Nutritive Functions-
Carbohydrates- Glucose with GLUT-1 transporter protein is diffuse through facilitated diffusion from mother to fetus.
Protein in the form of amino acids transport through active transport from mother to fetus more are essential amino acids.
Fat - triglycerides and fatty acids are directly transported across through the membrane and later synthesized by the fetal body itself.
IgG antibodies cross this barrier through endocytosis and exocytosis.
Water soluble vitamin, phosphorus, iron crosses through active transport and Na+, K+, cl- by simple diffusion
2. Enzymatic Function-
Diamine oxidase- inactivated pressure amines
oxytocinase- inactivated oxytocin
phospholipase A2 synthesizes arachidonic acid.
