Something that's also worked really well for me is being honest with the customer. The management prefers that I don't do that, but customers love it and appreciate it a lot, and I get great tips because of it. If they ask how a dish is, and it's a dish that I'm not really a fan of, then I say, "It's good, it's just it's a little salty"

Actually that is where you are partly wrong. I served tables for over 8 years and being the most requested server in my store I know for a fact the majority of people love to talk about themselves and their families. However a good server will immediately know if a patron is this type or the "just serve my food type." This is a skill that has to be learned by the server.

I think you need to be able to read your table. Some people get very annoyed with a waiter who is trying to talk to them the whole time and your tip will be better if you simply smile and get what they want; others like to be talked to and "buttered up" so they feel more welcome and make a connection with their server. Just my $.02

Yeah...try all of that on a Friday night, when the wait is 2 1/2 hours, and you've got 15+ people asking for shit, at the same time....
Wanna make big tips, get what they need, and smile the whole time. Period.

It's very strange when you ask strangers what are they doing tonight? What college they went into? When you do business focus on business and talk about business not to ask them about their personal lives and talk about it for 10min. Excellent customer service is when you can provide them what they really needed like the sauce that they wanted for example and not to ask them so many personal questions. Give your customers privacy.

I am pretty sure servers hate serving you. You are what people in hospitality would call an "exact" customer.

I want to believe you. I do. But, sometimes it truly feels as though whether you go out of your way or not, people are going to tip what they are going to tip. Now, you can screw up and get less of a tip, don't get me wrong. But, you can show them how they can "save money" by doing it "this way" or anticipating their needs by when they ask for bread (since you knew they would) you already have it on the tray. But when they leave $5 on $60, it makes you go, REALLY? What could I have done better?

I simply tip 10%, that should cover the tip out and something for the server.

i do this everyday. and i have learned no matter what, if people want to spend money, there gonna spend money. Ive kissed enough ass for change and i have to say what you say IS only PARTIALLY true... so servers that are watching this, feel out your tables. Dont bend over backwards for just anyone.

I don't tip anyone getting a wage or who set a fixed rate for services period. If you make only tips and I mean no wage or set fee like a Busker then okay I might slip something if I like the service provided. Example if you have someone that cleans you car windows just for a tip slip them something like $1.00.

I hate waiters / servers that get personal or ask to many questions or get friendly! No let me just read the menu, order the food and eat in peace! Thanks!

@skippermullet69 if your coworkers are doing that at your work, would you stand for it? that's disgusting. i would never serve food or drink that i personally wouldn't eat or drink.

Hope you don't frequent the same restaurants as servers will get to know and avoid you for being soooo cheap!!!!

  • @Tihbialdunav

N1 is unusable these days. Very few restaurants let you try the food they serve. FACT.
Also, I don't need a server to be personable with me. Rhetoric questions like "how are you" mean fakeness and I absolutely hate that. As long as they are prompt, polite and professional, they get 20%. Don't need ANY sleazy small talk whatsoever.

Actually your teachings are wrong! customers does not want to be interviewed by the waiter. it's very irritating that you would be asking all of these personal questions when in fact, I just like to eat. This has been my personal experience. I hate waiters that talk too much.
