xD check out Heartattack in a Layby by Porcupine Tree if you want a truly truly sad song to get a good cry out of :)
it's about a guy that has a fight with his wife and takes a drive to clear his head and slowly succumbs to, and describes the symptoms of having a heart attack and dying while wishing only in the end that "I just want, to say sorry, and that we'll grow old together". As if his ghost is already reaching out from his body trying to say he's sorry that that was the last time they would see each other. Simple, sad and beautiful.

They're both beautiful and so different and both evoke the emotions of the times they're recorded in. I actually prefer this version over the original...mainly because of the passion that David sings this song!
He also has some really great songs on the "Evolution" album....one of my favorites is "A Reason to Fight" that deals with addiction, depression, etc. I am 23 years, 4 months and 14 days sober...and I don't take anything for granted. Some think after such a long time that I don't have to fight every second, minute and hour of every day! I know what I am and I know how to win each and every moment! So I fight!
Then there is "Hold Onto Memories"... the song title tells you what the song is about!

This song has a lot of meaning for me. I loved the original by Simon & Garfunkel. I’m 48, will turn 49 in March. My mom introduced me to a lot of music from the 60’s and 70’s. She loved Simon & Garfunkel and I had the privilege of taking my mom to see them live in concert in the early 2000’s. Now…I listen to all kinds of music from all genres and time periods. But my mom was way more knowledgeable about current music than myself. She absolutely LOVED this version of this song. It gave so much more feeling than the original and she and I both felt great emotion when listening to this version along with the video. It will always have a very special place in my heart because I lost my mom in 2021 just before her 70th birthday. I still listen to it regularly but must admit I cry every time. It reaches deep into my soul and overwhelms my feelings of loss which I still have not been able to come to terms with.

I think it was the first time in all of my 63 years that my brother had ever shared a song with me like that because it had touched him so much. I feel the same way. I can't get enough of it. David Draiman...amazing range and control...a powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do . He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! ...one of the best male vocalists on the planet imho. Loved your reaction.

Alot of his songs have real meaning and also a lot are from personal experiences. The official music video has wonderful visual effects , wonderful music and beautiful vocals. Just a phenomenal piece of work.
I never even heard of Disturbed until this song when I saw it early 2022. Now I love it and all their stuff.
All music, TV, movies, books etc if done well should elicit emotions. A sign of a great artist is if they can make you cry. I'm a 56 year old guy been around music all my life and not ashamed to say every time I hear this song I cry but not sad tears just emotional reaction I guess.

This song just hits all the emotional beats to be sung with such serious force as David Draimen embodies...a man walks through the city in the cold rain, watching the flickering neon signs for bars, brothers, and bodegas as people run in and out catering to their vices...suddenly he realizes what has happened, we have constructed a neon god of consumerism and technology that is destroying our humanity...and so he rages as desperately searches for that human connection in words, ears, and hands...but then he see's the truth, the "Words of the prophets" in the "Fuck You's" and other graffiti scrawled across the subway walls and tenement halls...worshiping this neon god will only lead us to hate and destruction...

@@pattimercer9357 - the unique and impressive thing with this performance is the vocals. And the vocals in the live version is 10 times better. The vocals in the video is too processed.
And @moirabaker458 - the message? OK - different people might hear different messages. To me the message is political. That people are made quiet. That songs with a political message is no more. And that people are not listening to political messages anyhow. The video shows forgotten instruments that now are used again. It is just a flashy video - IMHO the video misses the message 180 degrees.

But the vocals of the live appearance that night took this up another leap, timesv20! It impressed me even more so once I learned that David was horribly Ill that night with a raging fever. The host wanted him to cancel the appearance and go to the hospital, but David wouldn't so they compromised and David sat in the stool for it. Even Paul Simon said that David owned this song and made it better. Just a stunning reimagining of the song. Period.

When Simon and Garfunkel first wrote and recorded this song way back in 1964, it was less intense - a gentler admonition to my generation to pay attention to what was going on in the world around us. Disturbed's version is how much stronger the song *needs* to be now. The gentle warning about lack of empathy and communication in pursuit of the "neon gods" has gone so much further with the advent of electronics, and needs a voice to thunder this warning.
Cell phones, tablets, social media "influencers", and the programming we see in everyday life have created a world where, even on crowded public transit, many of the young are so wrapped up in their phones that they have ceased to see the old person, the pregnant woman, the man on crutches - those who really need a place to sit. Other people have become invisible and inaudible as the young sit, earbuds in and heads bowed to their "electronic gods". I hope they hear this song, and are still capable of actually listening to it.
David's voice is a voice we need to broadcast from every subway wall...

Great reaction. Now you definitely need to do a reaction video to the version they performed live on the Conan O'Brien show. Without a doubt it's the best live cover of any song I've ever heard, and many in the comments of the video and reaction videos agree. Incredibly done.

This song speaks volumes to me. My heart hurts for the meaning in this song. People have lost the meaning of unity and compassion. This world has become a dark and sad place for a lot of people. I can’t do this alone. We must open our hearts to music and it’s meaning. It helps many lost and lonely people. It also hurts many that feel there is no answer. Depression and loneliness hurt to the very core of our souls. Lets keep an eye out if we see someone having a bad day. Say “hello”, share some love. SING A SONG TOGETHER. Show the goodness and greatness in your hearts! Love and smiles are free… give them out generously. Pray for peace, and help those in during our Holiday season and even beyond this time. For the sake of human kindness and peace of mind for us all. God bless you all!🙏🏻

Your facial reactions say it all !!! This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and Disturbs version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings... 😌 I always feel this song is like a rollercoaster ride, slowly brings you to the top, then crashing to the bottom.....Great reaction!!!

I'm 71 years old and I'm a lover of the oldies of late 50', 60's and 70's so this particular song just touched me and I can't explain it!

There is no need to apologies for not hearing this song yet! Imo the things happen when they should and for me this timing was perfect, because listen to it with someone who don't know the song is the closes you can come to listening to the song for the first time yourself.
For me when I heard the original from Simon and Garfunkel the first line already captured my attention but with the composion it could not hold it, so I kinda forgot the song.
Until Disturbed made the cover - and this, the voice, the instruments, the building...it reached deep into my soul. So I could finally understand what Simon wanted to tell me (us) with his beautiful lyrics!

I'm 76 years old and was a senior in high school when this song was released. It was a reaction to the Vietnam War, the assasinations of John F. Kennedy, Jr., Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. It was an extremely sad and tumultuous time. Our society was broken and Simon and Garfunkel reflected that emotion beautifully in The Sound of Silence. Disturbed voices my anger that the world has not listened or done anything to heal our planet. Though we know so much more about the harm we cause in so many ways, humanity turns our backs on making sacrifices to make this a better place for our descendants.

Me being in my 50's, I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel. I spent decades listening to the original. Fast forward to the late 90's, early 2000... I always thought Disturbed had a very unique sound, and they have definitely evolved throughout the years.
When their rendition of "Sound of Silence" came out, I gave it a listen. After the first time, I just sat there, dumbfounded, and in shock. I simply stared at my phone screen for several moments, before I hit "replay".
Second time around, I'm sobbing... a deep running gamut of emotions. My heart gave a standing ovation and clapped with intent. Conviction.
They did justice. And now, to this day, I still feel the same way as I did then. Absolutely beautiful.

Thank you for your comments, I loved your reaction to this cover, so much symbolism in this cover, I am a child of the 60's when Simon & Garfunkel released the original in 1964 I was in high school, back then I considered it kind of country-ish, I liked it but the message didn't pierce the soul (okay so I'm 75). This cover by Disturbed along with the video is the BEST it touches your soul and really gets S&G message to the core of my being and many others too, goosebumps and tears every time. "Neon God" in the 60's TV the advancement of technology NOW there is so many more especially cell phones. "Neon light that split the night", I remember when neon light would turn on there would be a crackling sound thus touched the sound of silence.
Suggestion = The official video by Disturbed “Hold On To Memories” was released Jan 23rd 2020. “Hold on to Memories" is about not only honoring those we’ve lost, but also making the most of our time with those we still have.

well I for one LOVE this song.. I am NOT a rock song lover and can honesty say I have NEVER heard anything else Disturbed has ever song.. but this song? OH MY WORD it gets me deep down in my being!!!
I feel its todays world completely.. people talking without saying a word, people hearing without listening, all the attention now is on the cell phones no one knows whats going on around them !
Simon and Garfunkel was beyond their time when they wrote this song, and I remember what a hit it was, yet I really couldnt relate to it NOT until now.. Not until Disturbed,, Thank you Sir for singing this song with the passion you have!

I'm a huge fan of Disturbed, because David Drayman's voice is something else. But even though, I wasn't prepared for THAT when the cover was released. It's like he put all the meaning of the lyrics right there in front of our eyes. You can feel, some despair at the beginning, then the frustration that rises until it becomes utter anger at people's foolishness. It's visceral and stunning. S&G created something beautiful. Disturbed made it perfect. Tha's all I can say. It's perfect.
And so many years yet after this cover was released, yes it is still on my daily playlist and gives me goosebumps every single time, as it does for my 77 years old mom who always shout "louder!!!" :D

I'm addicted to this incredible version! I first heard it as the closing musical selection of a Coast to Coast broadcast--around 4:50 a.m. (so glad I hadn't fallen asleep). The original version has always been a favorite of mine, but David has lifted it to an entirely new level with his incredible voice & so much emotion. I'm still getting chills as I type this--& every time play this amazing song.
