From what I understand from my grandparents, they adored the 1950's for the simple fact that there was more food and variety. My grandmother lived on a farm in WWII as a child and in 1944 and 1945 she almost exclusively ate carrots. Carrots for lunch, carrots for dinner, until there were no more and the new harvest had to come around, which were, you guessed it, carrots. She hated carrots for the rest of her life, so I can image the 1950's looking like paradise.
When you have seen further back in time for dinner before it's interesting to see how similar the 50s kitchen is to the 1900s kitchen. The war really thrown people back in time..
I wish they would do this series with a modern family that has a mom who knows how to cook well to see how hard it would be for her to tackle the old school appliances, to see whether she'd get the hang of it and be able to provide nice meals for her family with what she has available. It doesn't seem sporting that they chose Mum's who don't cook. If they don't cook in modern times how are they supposed to tackle this?
What a great show!!! I really had no idea how bad the Brits had it after the war. I thought life was much better for them from what I had seen in the movies, but it goes to show that reality is completely different from what is portrayed on tv. I am grateful to whoever created this show and even more so now that I have seen how blessed we are to live in an era where our quality of living is so incredibly high (regardless of our income bracket) in comparison to the past generations. Growing up in Albania as a young teen I can tell you that I deeply empathize with the kids, but I also see just how spoiled our kids are today and that they truly need education to understand the food struggles of the past. When you have nothing to eat, even a piece of liver (which I used to hate and now I actually like) can be a godsend. Thank you UK for always creating such interesting and educational shows. I think the shaped metal piece between the knifes have to rest under the led on the side and then you leverage the knife into the top lid. Best on the side towards the lid.

After Supersizers, I decided to see if I can find more documentaries like that series, came across this, and - boom - Giles, who was in Supersizers, is here too, haha! I’m so glad I found this, I love learning about the mundane side of history.
The daughters appear younger in this decade. In the earlier decades they looked more sophisticated. Actually I wonder if they filmed the latter decades first, and then went back and filmed the 1800s to turn of century, later.. They look rested, and younger, even Rochelle in this decade. Yep I bet that's what they did.

But in the 1900's a mom would run outside in panic caus she would end up beating scrubbing and washing clean the kids clothes, whilst still being responsible for the food to make the table and the house be kept clean. It must have felt like being caged or in prison. And whilst the women could not afford a quick sit down with a cup of tea, the husband sat in a chair reading the paper not even thinking of getting up and lending a hand in any of his wife's chores.
I feel so bad for women back in the day! Here the family is relatively comprehensive about the bad food, but back then it would all fall on to the mother's shoulders.
2020 and I still work full time and cook and keep my house sparkling clean and take care of the garden while my husband loafs around. Nothing has changed. And I keep my hair and makeup looking great.
And you are able to do all this without a washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, or vacuum? I dunno I only have a washing machine and fridge out of that list, so maybe you don't but even just the washing machine saves me a lot of time and energy. Are you also currently shopping on ration restrictions? Can't imagine being a housewife and having a fulltime job while having to do all chores by hand, plus shopping every day as well as dealing with austerity and rations. and then also doing hair and makeup everyday.
I thhink they should be more greatful for their food, at least, the bread is way healthier than nowaday's bread. And potaotes also are. I would love them not to complain so much.

Made to entertain us. The women of this era were so good at everything that they did, rarely did they do the blunders shown here. This series is slanted towards women working outside of the home instead of focusing on the history, a pity there isn't more positive, all about goof-ups and earning money, wanting out. Lots of laughs but frustrating to see how modern women are portrayed as incompetent in the 1950's home. Interesting...

Well it seems that she got better with practice. The dinner was deemed a success.
