Wow, I can't even follow these games without playing them at reduced speed and stopping them regularly! An interesting question occurs to me though: I'm a weak player, maybe 1400, but I wonder if I could beat these guys if they were playing hyperbullet and I was playing classical? We couldn't try this experiment in real life of course -- unless we could freeze them somehow while I was spending 10 minutes on a move they'd just think on my time and crush me -- so it's more of a hypothetical question about how strong GMs like these are when they are playing this fast. But hey, you *can* freeze computers! So the question becomes how strong are chess engines if only given 30 seconds against a human playing classical, and if they aren't allowed to calculate on the human's time. Any thoughts?
@@gutschgutscher2609 OK, let me try asking the question a different way. If these games were represented as classical games by unknown players, how strong would a panel of competent reviewers judge the players to be? (Note that this isn't exactly the same question I asked before, and it has its own pitfall: It may be that Naroditsky and Firouzja were making mistakes no strong player would make in classical time format, while pursuing strategies no weak player would think to pursue, so the games might not look like anything human players of any strength would ever play in classical).
Grandmasters are able to analyze too deeply on instinct alone that even in these games no amateur would be able to beat them. I'm not even convinced an IM would be able to beat Danya or Hikaru with your parameters.
@@AJ-er9my Well that is the question isn't it? My own suspicion is that they aren't playing at IM level, but that's just a guess. It occurs to me though that it *could* be tested directly: If you could tune an engine so that its play in 30 second games was equivalent to an IM playing classical you could have Naroditsky or Firouzja play a bunch of 30 second games against it and see what happens. But are current engines strong enough for that? I.e., can even Stockfish, limited to 30 seconds of calculation, play as well as an IM who has three hours?
@@hummingfrog even with 30 seconds stockfish with a really powerful computer is definitely beyond gm level. It always calculates ahead (there’s no way to really stop that from happening since if it didn’t calculate future moves then it wouldn’t be able to decide what the current best move is)
