Dimitri Tiomkin was born in 1894 in Kremenchuk, then part of the Russian Empire (now central Ukraine). He was educated at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied piano with Felix Blumenfeld, teacher of Vladimir Horowitz, and harmony and counterpoint with Alexander Glazunov, mentor to Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich. After the hardships caused by the Russian Revolution, he moved to Berlin in 1921, then to Paris and to New York in 1925. Then came the stock market crash in 1929 when he found a new home in Hollywood.
There is a short passage at 5:55 that quotes a theme from the Polovitsian Dances by Borodin. When I much younger, I was rather dismissive of Tiomkin. But as I listen more to his output now, I am really enjoying his many movie scores! He had his musical signatures that fit into many genres of films, from westerns to sci-fi to epics.👍
LOVE THIS FILM. THE SOUNDTRACK, THE PERFORMANCES, THE CINEMATOGRAPHY, THE COSTUMES. I SAW IT 5 TIMES. ALEC GUINNESS, LOREN, C, PLUMMMER, JAMES MASON GAVE STELLAR PERFORMANCES NOT TO MENTION HOW GORGEOUS LOREN LOOKED AS LUCILLA.❤❤❤👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🥰🥰🥰
soundtrack Fred: Thanks for all these great film score suites. I use them to preview scores and then buy the ones I like. As you would know these average $25-30 and can be much higher, so the samples are very helpful. Some scores work well in a film but don't make great listening. This is a favorite I;ve had for years but am enjoying your take on it, Thanks again for all your work.
A spectacular score and unbelievable sets but for a sadly flawed film which, like ancient Rome itself, eventually toppled under the weight of its own hubris.
@@richin2123 It seems that there's as least an hour of Mann's original cut that is missing. I know that a few scenes have been restored but quite a bit seems to have been lost. I believe it was Mann's son, who was a kid at the time, that said he remembered scenes between Commodes and Livius which really build the tragedy with their crumbling relationship. Apparently the second half is missing the most scenes and I do personally agree that it feels unfinished. These fellas know more: ruclips.net/video/vS_LF-Zg1_E/видео.html

i've seen the picture many times and i love the music.i intend to get the DVD,one more thing fred,do you have the score to the 1958 kirk douglas film"the vikings"?a lot of us who saw that as i did, would like to hear that too!
Hello Steven, just yesterday the movie was in German tv and I saw some bits and recognized the music, immediately. It is a great idea to request it and I will try my best to fulfill that wish. :-) As far as I know there is only a 40 min. release, featuring the original recordings and a new re-recording of the complete score that was even released in this year. Anyway I will try to get the best result out of Nascimbene's original recordings during the next weeks, for sure! Best to you! Fred
For Harmut Jager I do not agree with you at all ... when Hans Zimmer has the trajectory of Tiomkin we will see, but because of Zimmer's age, he no longer reaches the stature or the amount of great works that Tiomkin did
The Nic Raine recording is of course complete but the expanded release is the original recording, which makes it precious and it is almost complete. Best! Fred
@@IsraelNowIsraelForever If I remember correctly all major cues are included and have survived (some in mono, though). Some tracks are unfortunately lost to time but it's still a great presentation and of course exactly what you hear in the movie, conducted by the composer, which makes it an unmistakable experience.
Jeden z najpiękniejszych motywów muzycznych w mistrzowskim wykonaniu dzięki ❤ Beata
The complete overture is so beautiful piece of music! I can't stop listening it over and over again!
So do I, plus Pax Romana I blow very often in streets!
Magnificent score! It captures (IMHO) the overripe grandiosity of ancient Rome…in our modern fantasies. Thx for posting!👍👍
Es bellisima, toda la melancolia y grandeza del Imperio, que maestro! 😢🎉❤
I remember seeing this film as a kid...both the screenplay and music blew my mind

The Best Score of Mr.Tiomkin! Full "Cineramic" Stereophonic Sound! Good this highlights.
I prefer The Big Sky.
Great movie 🎬 score from Dimitri
The score to this film is spectacular.
@@RETROGEMS Those opening horns and the organ especially!
The first film I remember seeing in the cinema as a child. Great to hear this, thanks.

Always know a Tiomkin score. Utterly distinctive and utterly inspiring.
Une œuvre puissante à la mesure de ce très grand film.
Hermosa musica........ muy profunda....gracias desde Chile (Sudamérica)
I have not heard this in ages has brought back some great memories. Thank you so much for taking the time out to post this.
A most amazing film composer The tarantella is wonderful. We shall never again see films like this

HE WAS ALSO GOOD AT THIS FILM .. I THINK IT WAS NOT HIS FAULT BUT BECAUSE OF THE SCRIPTS..😮😢

Thanks for the nice comment! Fred
Listen to this and the same composer's score for the Guns of Navarone and you'll notice some striking parallels
A spectacular score and unbelievable sets but for a sadly flawed film which, like ancient Rome itself, eventually toppled under the weight of its own hubris.
Have to agree. Had some of the most spectacular sets and one of the worst scripts ever. Stephen Boyd always blamed this film for ruining his career.
I love this movie.
Will the movie ever be re-released on home video with the deleted scene which was discovered too late to be included on the current DVD?
Esa obertura😢😮
The greatest movie taking place in Ancient Rome ever made
The politics shown in the film haven't aged a bit. Still resonates today, and I think it's time for a Blu-ray and a critical re-examination.
I wish we had a complete cut!

Il est mentionné 'Sinfonia of London' mais également 'Rome Symphony Orchestra ! Lequel est le bon ?
Somewhat like a background music of a Western movie, but still magnificent.
Still cannot believe Fred that this classic lost out to Mary Poppins in the Oscar category
Mary Poppins is a better movie and sountrack than this, and I love these kind of movies and I love this song. But Mary Poopins is a masterpiece.
I'm with you,Vincent and another miscarriage was the year before when Alfred Newman's monumental "How the West Was Won" lost to "Tom Jones."

Gladiator with this music ,,, although Gladiator is inspired by this great movie without special effects, like the mediocre movies of today
The quality of the score outweighs that of film I believe.
Where is the title sequence with the fine organ lead? This is not it.
For Harmut Jager

- has anyone noticed that the story of this splendid movie was almost exactly copied in 'Gladiator' ? -
Both are based, somewhat loosely, on the same historical period.
@@TomDaly943 More very loosely than somewhat. :)
@@pp312 picky, pick, picky!
@@TomDaly943 I'll give you that it's the same historical period, but the stories are very different once Richard Harris leaves the scene.
the two scores of films never surpassed this one, and Conan de Basil Poledouris
I especially love the choral voices in Conan!
Agree with Conan ost, but the best score ever by the master is Ben-Hur

Dear Mister President?
The theme and soundtrack: A solid " A" .... the film: filled with inaccuracies, and far too many departures from history: A " C- " at best.
Good Score, but the one in 'Gladiator' was more to my liking ! -
Feo, deprimente y desordenado, nada que ver con las orquestaciones coherentes y emotivas que hay en otras películas peplum
Idiota. No tiene gusto si se lo ponen en la trompa.
