When I was a kid in the 60's, my friends mom was The Alligator Woman at the freak show in Riverview Park located in Chicago. It is really too bad the PC crowd came along and ruined all those people's livelihoods. I used to go with my friend to their private tent in back where they ate and took breaks. What a great bunch of people. They made a decent living doing that. They also all had cards printed out with their stories and photos which sold well to the crowds. No one was lonely and living on disability. They were happy to get out all the time and be with others like themselves. Also some of that stuff, not all, was exaggerated to a degree as well to have enough performers to fill in. It ruined everything for them when those shows were shut down by do-gooders
When I was a kid in the 90s just seeing a small woman in a box like a zoo animal felt kinda fucked up at the fair but it was a different time 100% it felt wrong as a kid to look at a lady in a box she didn’t look happy at all it was a little depressing
In the 60s and 70s I used to take my severely retarded brother out for walks in the shopping malls inside. I startedthis when I was nine or so and he was seven. He was nonverbal and Looked very disabled. I got plenty of stares over the years I never ONCE got a smile or kind comment. The human race is unkind. I have never forget that part of my life. God bless all our slightly different population.
My 3 younger brothers and I lived with our grandparents, and they would take us to the circus and carnivals, but we never went in the tents, our grandparents said there were people in there that were different and shouldn't be stared at. We used to wonder what those people looked like, I just thought they were like me, I wear glasses, I was born deaf, I wear hearing aids and I lip read, and I walk with a limp, even at a very young age, I knew what it was like to be stared at. This was in the 60's and 70's, and sign language wasn't the normal way of communicating. A couple of years ago I did watch the movie Freaks, I saw it on you tube, it was pretty grainy, but it was still interesting. It was very sad, but I was so happy they got their revenge in the end. I'll be 65 in a couple of weeks, I managed to have a career I loved, my husband and I raised 4 kids, and none of them are deaf.
This video highlighted these people as unique and extrodinary individuals. It sounds like some of these people were successful and lived fulfilling lives. I do know for a fact many people born with deformities had harsh miserable lives. It is good to see that some enjoyed their lives.
most of these so called freaks had no other means of livihood. the "freak shows were a blessing. After they were stopped alot of them ended up in state run institutions, where they were really abused
I enjoy subjective history that cuts across all topics. My 1 criticism is the use of modern-day images. Because it creates a confusing, disjointed dichotomy for the viewer. It's a distraction that actually interferes with the narration.
The problem with this video is that they use clips and footage of people who have no relation to the characters they talk about. Most of these people don’t even have the same disorders. I doubt they got permission from the RUclipsrs they used in the clips.
Thank you so very much!! That was so well done, informative and a pleasure to watch and listen to. I hope to come across more of your stories. They have helped me to understand how wonderful my uniqueness truly is!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😇
It’s interesting and i think the research put into this was fantastic but the modern clips of people that have nothing to do with the subject is kinda goofy.
I always thought it was fine to earn money displaying interesting deformities. It may be the only way to earn money, especially in the past. The only exploiting I know of is managers ripping them off, but that happens to lots of people.
When they stopped these so called freak shows and stopped theses people in the circuses. They cut off these people’s way of making a living. They made good money, most did anyway…
I want to know which of the clips are of the actual person being spoken about... All the "B" Roll $hit kind of muddys the water and weakens the information.
YESSSSS!!! omg... im so relieved that im not the only one that feels this! it's kind of confusing and irritating. like, we get its focused on these individuals, but why show other people that have no logical or historical relation? Representation? They dont need that, though! Idk...
This is like those news articles that take fifteen pages to give you some Underwhelming finale Using pictures and videos of no relation. I didn't make it past, Tom Thumb.
There's nothing wrong with liking somebody for being different.... After all, it's a way that they carry that difference.... Not the bare fact that they are different....
Amazing how Robert Huddleston could do so much heavy manual labor! He couldn't walk normally but he worked in carpentry, logging, and did farm work? Wow.
PLEASE don't use footage of others in situations and scenarios they aren't in. You are indeed making a mockery of conditions and situations of the disabled.. This could have been informative using actual visuals instead of using images of folks that don't have anything to do with what you are discussing. This is not okay.
I worked with carnival sideshows and recorded French language bally tapes in Trois Rivieres, PQ for several freaks in the 1960s. In NYC at The American Theater of Magic I worked with Lady Estelline who would swallow up to five swords at a time. Yes, they were real swords but she dulled sharp edges.
Growing up, I had always thought that this was a trick or faked somehow, like with a collapsible sword. However, I have since seen people show exactly how this is done with real swords, but like you said they are just dulled so they won’t slice their esophagus or pierce their stomach. One person even did it in front of an x-ray machine to show how far the swords go down and how they all fit together in the small space of the esophagus. Another guy explained how dangerous it was to bend even the slightest wrong way and what would or could happen to them and then proceeded to bend at the waist and it actually scared the heck out of me. I truly felt real concern for the person. Thankfully he stood back upright and removed the swords without any damage or bleeding. Knowing that this is real and that there’s no trick to it AND that the person performing it could actually get hurt or even die, fills me with more respect and admiration for them.
I watched 5 minutes, I think of this and it's ridiculous. You're talking about things in the 1800s Yet you're showing today's time. That's pretty agitating, to be honest with you, so I'm not gonna finish it, I'm not gonna subscribe, and I'm not gonna like it. Start putting the right pictures on there if you want people to pay attention.
You do realize that was the era where people could make a living and live a decent life because of their unique condition? These shows don’t exist in ‘modern times’ because of supposed do gooders worrying about the dignity of those that were totally fine displaying their uniqueness only to ruin the only chance they had to live independently. They still have freak shows. Unfortunately, they mostly consist of people suspended from hooks in their flesh or hanging something horrid fr their nipples, privates or eyelids or hammering nails up their nose (blockheads). Sooo…I’d rather see people make the best of a not ideal situation to live a better life than some wackadoodle into self mutilation.
The man with the elastic skin and black eye shadow - I have met him in real life. He pulled his skin and hinted for me to touch it. I did. And he also pushed out one of his rib cage bones, that felt weird to touch.
I don't think showing freaks is inappropriate, as you stated in the description. I like viewing these freaks as much as the next guy. If this is inappropriate, as you say, why then are you profiting monetarily from this, by uploading it to RUclips?
No reason to feel pity for these people. They wore there differnts proudly. Plus they made a great deal of money. Not unusual for them to make 500.00 a week. That not too bad , before Biden era..they created a great family. Married and had childern.protected each other.took care of each other, enjoyed each others Families. Ya be nice to live in that Society.
I wonder how much bulling they got growing up. I bet most were kept at home, not allowed to go to public school because it would be an imbarrasment to the parents.
In those days, if there was some wealth, they were simply kept hidden away from the public gaze. Otherwise, many of them did end up in “Freak shows”. Such shows eventually ended when the general public decided they were exploitative and distasteful. Unfortunately, as is sometimes the case, making moral decisions for others can do some unintended harm. There was a great sense of community and belonging for many of these afflicted individuals, something they had often never had before. The dissolution of the shows took that away from them as well as any ability to be self supporting. Certainly we have far better options now both treatment and in socialization, I wouldn’t advocate for a return to such a thing but at the time this wasn’t the case.
It is really sad to me that these people where treated this way. Not as people but as a freak. And I can bet many laughed at them and made mocked them too . How cruel it must have been for them.
I DISAGREE...at least they had a life, lived independently and had an income. Today, it is labeled a disability. They qualify for government welfare and live on a fixed income their entire lives not really doing anything.
Watch the movie "The Greatest Showman" (2017). You can skip the musical numbers if you're not into it, but it offers a pretty interesting take on the lives of the "freaks" and how P.T. Barnum treated them.
How tall was Lincoln, and how tall was Tom and his Mrs. That would be amazin to fly on the wall huh? Sound like they were amazin people. Woulda like to have met'm.
Although this is not acceptable by todays standards, during those times the people in PT Barnum's circus were payed and had the friendship and companionship of those how otherwise would have been alone and friendless. For those who considered the circus a way of exploiting people with disability, imo didnot see the benefit of being together with others who would have shared the same if not for this circus.
During my younger years going up to a group of hot girl's one would always yell "Get away you freak!" I don't know what they meant because they ain't never seen these freaks!
I can do the Invulnerable Man's trick, but only with One hand, it hurts to start with, but you keep doing it through Scar Tissue, eventually, you have a Hole that Can't be seen unless your skin is carefully studied, then you can do it as often as you want without pain. This title should have been “The true resilience of the human spirit”with original photo ‘s only
Absolutely disgusting!!! 10:45 you used an image of Chelsea Bear without her permission. She has cerebral palsy. She is not a circus freak!
I agree this guy just throws up any random clip! Ridiculous!
most of these so called freaks had no other means of livihood. the "freak shows were a blessing. After they were stopped alot of them ended up in state run institutions, where they were really abused
Why don't you close the quotation marks
I enjoy subjective history that cuts across all topics. My 1 criticism is the use of modern-day images. Because it creates a confusing, disjointed dichotomy for the viewer. It's a distraction that actually interferes with the narration.
Yeah, I agree. Not just modern day clips but they had absolutely nothing to do with person he was talking about.
It's very distracting to show completely unrelated pictures and clips while telling (interesting) stories.

don't make sense
I’m sure Squirmy and Grubs love being included in a video about circus freaks 😳
i agree i got confused who is who
right ! ... this is weird , with pictures that have nothing to do with story. Crazy. Random ?
A lot of these channels use stock footage to fill space...
What is the point of all these other scenes of perfectly normal circus performers while talking about something completely unrelated?
Random clips of people and things not even related to the characters he’s talking about!
Thank you so very much!! That was so well done, informative and a pleasure to watch and listen to. I hope to come across more of your stories. They have helped me to understand how wonderful my uniqueness truly is!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😇

General Tom Thumb actually loaned PT Barnum money when he was down on his luck. They were good friends, so I wouldn't say he was exploited.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS WITH ME
I want to know which of the clips are of the actual person being spoken about... All the "B" Roll $hit kind of muddys the water and weakens the information.
Agreed. Talking about people who can't find work outside the freak show and showing a clip of Will Smith from a random movie!
YESSSSS!!! omg... im so relieved that im not the only one that feels this! it's kind of confusing and irritating. like, we get its focused on these individuals, but why show other people that have no logical or historical relation? Representation? They dont need that, though! Idk...

A mans man👊
Saw some of the last freak show shows in the 80s. Pretty cool.
The movie Freaks is still available.
Extremely creepy, but available. 😳🤯😵💫😲
Last time I checked, and I check daily seeing how I live there, they don't have any palm trees in milwaukee 😅
Freaks can be seen on Turner Classic Movies on Spectrum

ITS VERY FRUSTRATING, CONFUSING, AND INSULTING- especially those that have NOTHING to do with it. Just DONT.

Makes an introduction about current 'sensitivities' and then proceeds to say "BRING ON THE FREAKS".
I recommend the movie mentioned, FREAKS. Very old b&w. Really fascinating story line and has all these old stars
Really low budget and boring at times but pretty creepy at other times. That movie freaked me out when I was young (no pun intended).
THIS CHANNEL IS MIND-BLOWING /////////////////////////////SO ORIGINAL//////////WELL DONE GUYS 😉

The three legged man frank did not live till 96 he lived until 66
They are not freaks. They are people.
These people weren't freaks, they were just different. The film starring a few of these different people - 'Freaks' - is available on dvd.
The man with the elastic skin and black eye shadow - I have met him in real life. He pulled his skin and hinted for me to touch it. I did. And he also pushed out one of his rib cage bones, that felt weird to touch.
That guy who stabbed long knives and swords all the way through his own body......... Um, no thanks, lol ....🤮
Very entertaining !
Talent commes in all shapes and sizes!
Behind every "freack" there is a human beeing!
I don't think showing freaks is inappropriate, as you stated in the description. I like viewing these freaks as much as the next guy. If this is inappropriate, as you say, why then are you profiting monetarily from this, by uploading it to RUclips?
Too much cutting back and forth between other people, confusing.
I wasn't aware they had chainsaws in the 1890's.
Steam powered.
not worth looking at this after 25 seconds too many different nothing to do with the person talked about
And some of these people aren't freak's the 1st couple are short people. Which exist today
No reason to feel pity for these people. They wore there differnts proudly. Plus they made a great deal of money. Not unusual for them to make 500.00 a week. So they say it's exploitive, but they lived performed and died rich and well feed,
just seeing all those things being stabbed in that guys body makes mine cringe
Why no pics of the 4 legged woman dancing?
Very interesting...especially the part about Edward Mordake. Was he anything like Edward MordRake? The rest was interesting though
Tom Thumb owned a beautiful home on one of the Thimble Islands in Connecticut. It was his own personal island I’ve been.
All great people
How can you believe... You don't show them
I wonder if pony boy & camel girl would have dated ... Wierd thought, 😊

I watched the movie FREAKS. That womaN got what she deserves
I REALLY HATE IT WHEN THESE DOCUMENTARIES USE REAL MODERN DAY ACTORS ACTING SCENES INTERTWINED IN THE VIDEOS. TOTALLY RUINS IT!
My son's friend had back knee deformity. He had surgeries to repair it. Very painful, I'm sure.

Exactly how is “Mr. Tudball” from “The Carrol Burnett Show” analogous with P.T. Barnum?
