I have an old 2000s cordless phone that had one of these cheap carbon ribbon cables. This seems like a better solution for repair! :)

I've got a cheap temp-hygro meter, with 2 glass LCD (one for temp, one for humidity) which present the same symptoms, some led work, others don't, and now since I've dissasembled both, it's impossible to make contact anymore (it was glued on the LCD glass and the PCB, my cheap workstation is in coma...
Actually, it's a zebra connector and its advantage is that it must not be placed precisely compared to the PCB (it consist of a lot of vertical connectors insulated from each other).
The problem is to glue them back on the PCB.
I think I need an anisotropic conductive film : sort of tape that glues and conducts only through its thickness, not in its length.
The other problem, and the most important : the PCB is not perfectly flat (which I think is the root cause of the problem) and ripples => some contacts are off and unless I make it perfectly flat, I won't never be able to repair it...

You might be able to find a replacement zebra connector. Maybe even some way to attach it. The pcb must be flat so not sure if it would work again. Try to press on that area and see if it makes the segments work.

My metal strips on pcb have been damaged little bit, should I use soldering iron to repair?

You could try, very thin solder surface

I'm curious how the rubber strip comes into play to push display on LCD? Is there light shining through the rubber strip? Does the rubber strip have to be perfectly aligned with slots/holes on the strip and PCB? etc

The rubber strip I think it's called an elastomeric connector strip or zebra connector it has many conductive tubes going from one end to the other.
It doesn't matter how it's placed as long as the top and bottom parts touching it are aligned.
I was looking for info on it and found it's used a lot on LCD tv"s and is one of the main failure reason on LCD TVs other than power supply problems.

what would be appropriate to clean/rejuvenate the zebra stripe connector?

Elastomeric connectors - you could try to measure it and find a replacement.

so whats the special way to clean or build up traces on glass lcd part?

A replacement ribbon connector that is conductive at any point to the corresponding point on the other side.
Something like separate tubes going thru it. Can't remember the name but it's used even for repairing TV LCD panels that have broken or corroded glass contacts.
Same as the original really elastomeric connector
