there aren't very many youtubers posting good volta covers, let alone medleys of some of theodore's most difficult rythms. and you play them almost flawlessly. really liked how you still made it your own, especially at 8:04-8:10 i don't remember that being theodore but i could be wrong! keep it up

Nearly three years since I first watched this video (it was in July 2011, I believe) and three years later, it's still one of my favourite drum videos. I try to imitate Jon's style into my drumming (often failing) and watching this or old Volta videos, it feels me with massive inspiration and passion to jump straight onto the kit (not literally!) sick grooves, great technique and originality.Thank you Jon and thank you Stan for flawlessly covering these songs.

You are fucking insane, I'm having trouble finding words to describe what I'm feeling, I've never seen someone other than Theodore play the Eriatarka chorus and that odd part in Take The Veil like you did, holy shit, what a monster.
The Eriatarka chorus is literally one of the easier complex-sounding parts he created, too. That part in Take The Veil still evades me, though. Eriatarka is really fun to play because of all the ghost notes.
Every comment I've read so far fails to mention the great improv you do in Tetragrammaton just past 8:00. Very impressive. That's my fav Volta song, so thanks for adding something new to it. A great listen every time I watch/listen to this video

You dropped this vid the day my daughter was born. She recently turned 11 and she loves the drums. For the last several years she has used this as inspiration. She still doesn't "get" TMV, but she gets your medley

Not to say there weren’t good songs but it was very apparent something had changed. De-Loused, Frances, Amputechture, even Scab Dates their live album can all be considered “drop and walk” albums in my opinion. It was even worse with Octahedron and Nocturniquet

2:58 even just this segment and then the following beat alone in that one song is enough to put him into legendary status, and that is literally only the tip of the iceberg on that entire album.
Theodore gave the band that edge, the band's frantic energy kind of left without his schizophrenic rhythm pushing everything to the brink of destruction. Still made good albums without him, but nowhere near as exciting.
I mean, apart from laying out drum patterns, fills, and - to a degree - feel, no drummer has ever informed what the actual musical intention of any TMV album was.
They're all over the place really, but if you go to 5:10 when he start to play the Cicatriz ESP groove, its all the 'quiet' hits on the snare drum between the loud ones.

I have seen few that are this spot on with the vibe and feel and true timing he plays. Even some of the other mars volta drummers weren't getting it this right. Actually kind of not even close. I'm also really impressed with the sound here. It sounds so open but big and clear. Those cymbals... never seen before but they sound incredible. Must work really great in a mix after dropping out a touch of the lows on them. Great, great playing man. I think there was maybe just a couple spots there were some slight ghosts missed but even jon didn't nail every ghost note the same live. Fantastic playing. This is exactly what to look for in a drummer for anyone starting a band. This guy loves hitting his kit. If you listen to Tool at all... they have another drummer that absolutely loves hitting each and every one of his drums in every different flavor he can coax out of them. This is a craftman. Look for a craftman with drummers.
Should get back together with ZacK. Those two were beasts on their one momentous EP. Saw them play at Soundwave in 2011. Best gig of the day. Main reason I went, 'cause I had a feeling this was my one and only chance. There were about 30 people there. Couldn't believe it. What a f**kin' disappointing bunch of losers they must have thought Perth was. It was sad. But never-the-less they gave us their all. That One Day We Were Lions, I'll never forget.
Bravo !! Jon is one of my biggest inspirations .. after he was out of the band they lost that overwhelming groove that no one else could bring ! His rhythmic flow was untouchable!! Still gives me goosebumps

for this amazing video i've watched pretty much every month since it dropped, just have to shout out how perfect it is to end with the Eriatarka final chorus -- a total release of energy that's at the same time a kind of cooldown victory lap.
