Veritasium's video: • The World in UV
The sun is trying to kill you, but thankfully I'm here to save you (you're welcome). With the power of raspberries's, coconuts, some shiny rocks, and a prickly plant, I take on the enormous nuclear reaction occurring above our heads and see how well I can protect us from the harmful radiation of the sun...from scratch!
Thank you to our talented interns Randi and Donna (donnalynnart.com) who helped with both the animation and with the testing of the sunscreen!

Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

I think your zinc oxide would've worked perfectly to prevent sunburn. After all, you can't get sunburn if you don't have any skin.
Nice comment I like it
Wouldn't it worse XD hey it's doing its job kinda
dangit
Lead oxide would be even better.Death the ultimate sun block.
Oh God, I just thought of getting a sunburn on your bare muscles
It was so fun working with you guys and watching you pour weird substances all over your arms. Glad things worked out well.
Hmm
You guys are awesome!
Hi
The link to your video (in the description of this vid) bounces back to this same video btw
Nice a collab I would've never expected
I love how you post videos of your attempts that don't work as well as what your initial research says it might or don't measure up to commercial bought products. You manage to show "failure" in an interesting and educatuonal way. Keep up the good work!
it's a real science channel, where you learn more about your failures than about you successes
You could measure the "reflective" sunscreens by coating a UV transparent window in the test compounds, and filming that with the UV camera from behind.
*edit* whoops you kinda did that at the end with the sensor. why not film it with the UV camera???
Oddly that never crossed my mind in the moment. We did film the testing with the UV camera (just forgot to use the footage), but didn't film it looking up through the sunscreen. I did a quick test and posted it to our community post. Looks like it would have worked! But still might have been hard to assess too accurately what equivalent SPF it had.
Hi dad
My two favorite RUclipsrs :3
William Osman DAMN IT WILLIAM WAIT TO THE END BEFORE MAKING YOURSELF LOOK DUMB
Nelson Stetson yo chill
I am always so impressed by the thoroughness of your videos. Great work!!
Veritasium. hello, have a nice day.
Hey Derek, i liked this sorta-collab. Good day, sirs.
Veritasium
There is an episode of bears grylls (personally not a fan) but he's on a castaway type island and he rubs a shellfish substance on him as sunscreen as I recall. Maybe that info is useful.
Wish you had linked to HTME's video in yours...
Daedhart - he does. That's how I found it.
Missed opportunity to see how blood looks in UV
My guess is that it would absorb pretty well. The heme group has a lot delocalized pi-bonds and they typically absorb well in the UV.
Yeah, it's probably just black
I wonder.. too. It should be really clear though, even if hemoglobin absorbs uv, mostly due to blood being 70% water, and water does not block UVA. Everything and it's mother blocks UVB though.
Not really. The same applies to visible light - water doesn't block that very well and yet blood is red.
too many and it'll absorb in the visible.... that's why blood is red.
We need more collabs like that on RUclips, it's really great. 3 channels going in depth about one topic but at 3 different angles. Thank you for your work, it was fun and I learned a lot!
yes plus found thus chan due to it !! checking out other uploads
I agree! I went from Veritasium to Physics Girl and then here! Now I have a broader understanding of UV and its workings!
*THE SUN IS A DEADLY LAZER*
Not anymore there’s a -blanket- sunscreen
TASTE THE SUN
Are you going to sign the piece of junk? You Should! Then it would be a collector's item .
I feel bad for this channel i mean they put so much effort into the content and its costs loads of money to make the each video, but it seems like they get nothing in return.
Dundi you can support him on patreon :)
He’s pulling in $1344 on patreon, on top of RUclips money, how ever little or bigger that is. But I agree, for the quality videos, and educational content, it isn’t enough
K0ester I thought he did not pull money from RUclips
OMG, trying to refine Zinc Oxide. While I get "HTME" theme there are somethings which would be/ are just impractical.
K0ester no he doesn’t monetize his videos
Seriously though everyone, if you like this content become a Patreon donor. I donate a dollar a month and have been doing it since for ever, but every bit helps and is put to incredibly good use.
true and i wish i could be will never leave my credit details online after I have been burnt twice due to fraud.
@@benjohnston9455 Its kinda sad to hear that but please donate some he really deserves it
@@Archxr dude he already makes BANK from RUclips alone. He doesn't by any means need it lol.
@@benjohnston9455 take some cash and buy some homeless folk some food. Especially women and children. They are the ones who REALLY need help.
Can you guys make a book filled with all the stuff you learned? I would totally buy it! Plus I would like to have the knowledge with me :)
For those asking about the camera. It looks like a Nikon D5500/D5600. DSLRs have a filter built in to block UV and infrared light to improve image clarity, however these filters can be removed with some DIY allowing the camera to go "full spectrum". You then need to add a filter to the lens to isolate the part of the spectrum you want to see/record in. Just be aware, making your camera go full spectrum will make it useless at everyday visible light photography.
This channel deserves so many more views
Emmy Tang then get your family and friends to watch
Great stuff guys. Found you thanks to Physics Girl and I'll definitely be checking out your other content now!
I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this channel! I love all the science that goes into this, thank you for what you do!
I'm very glad I found your channel through Physics Girl! I'm going to check out your other videos right now. Your commitment to detail and following the whole process through is impressive.
double agree. chan+backuploads.
a colab with nilered might be fun.
We'd love to!
Infinity War is the most ambitious crossover out there.
How to Make Everything Crew: Hold my beer...
He could help make some of those commercial grade sunscreens.
More like; Hold my self-made rootbeer ^tm
And in his own self-made glass
I just wanted to say thank you. You all make really great content all the time and that's hard to find these days on RUclips.
I love the story's you tell and to be honest you break down some really interesting things in a way that if o e day we had nothing I feel like there are some actual things that people would make because they have watched your videos
As a pink skinned red head this video was really cool but crushed my hopes of making sunscreen during the zombie apocalypse. I guess it's heavy cloth for me.
Chad Wittenmyer not a problem if all vegetation grows back, we had cover before we fucked everything to hell. Unless you live in the desert, which, dont.
Alex well I'm screwed. I live in a high plains desert. Not much vegetation in the best times.
I feel your pain Chad...
Cries in ginger
Quick tip: zinc oxide is an amphoteric oxide, which means it can react with both bases (e.g. NaOH) and acids (e.g. H2SO4), while iron oxide is a basic oxide. This means that iron oxide can be separated from zinc oxide through the use of a strong base.
Additionally, sulfur is unable to react much with strong bases unless the temperature is above the boiling point of water. So using a room-temperature solution (aka dissolved in water, NOT melted) of a strong base can also separate zinc oxide from sulfur
Pixl Rainbow you could jus torch it, sulfur into sulfur dioxide, and the oxides stay the same.
That was actually one of the ways I tried to purify it that's briefly shown: dissolving it in a base, strain out the solids, then dilute it in a bunch of water to precipitate the zinc. (I was working with a metallurgical engineer who was giving me some advice). Tried it with a few variations, but didn't have much luck getting a visible quantity to result in the end.
like i said, burning is aways the best option.
How To Make Everything the problem is that the Zinc Oxide turns into Sodium Zincate. It's not oxide anymore.
According to a random paper by Ailiang Chen, Sodium Zincate is somewhat soluble in water, and must be saturated in a water solution at 100°C before being diluted and then then cooled slowly to 75, 50 and 25°C in order to decompose the Zincate back to zinc oxide and precipitate it.
Your videos are awesome and I have enjoyed every single video you have made, keep it up.
I really admire you making your own ingredients from scratch and also choosing to give away the device rather than sending it to the landfill. you seem pretty eco concious and this is my first video ive seen of yours
I agree with everything here! This is my first HTME video. I gotta say it’s refreshingly homespun compared to Nile’s squeaky clean lab! Note I like science and experiments, but I don’t know much about chemistry, fwiw.
I enjoyed learning how the materials were sourced and was glad you tried to minimize your bloodshed and just buy premade stuff when that was more practical. Other things that might be interesting:
A tally of the cost of constituent ingredients.
How to dispose of materials if relevant, like is the coconut and cocoa grease OK to dump down the drain? I’m concerned in general about ecology plus how not to ruin your stuff. Sorry about the bee’s wax accident!
The approximate weight or volume of how much raw material was reduced. I note this because it looked like six coconuts produced six oz of oil. And raspberry oil? That was interesting!
I am ignorant of why the coconut needed to boil down. Was it to remove protein solids like with ghee?
I loved the fluffer nutter kitter cat photo bomb!
The sun is a deadly laser...
oh okay
Plasmatic not anymore there's a blanket
Aye aye references

Stumbled across this channel glad I did, there is some really cool stuff here.
I love your videos, I've already "watched", really listened to several in the background while I work. I think they are really interesting, I've only recently discovered your channel this week-- I will continue to support your channel by viewing/liking and commenting.
i love this channel. so. much. keep it going!!!
Linked over from Physics Girl. Watched. Subscribed.
I really like your videos. Keep up the good work!
I was so happy when I saw that you made a new video. I also like how you worked with physics girl too!
“Anyone want this piece of crap”
Me: ahh... he’s talking about me😚
Aloe Vera is great in lemonade as a little boba, or really in any sweet drink
Honestly Andy I love your channel you put so much effort into it. I wish I could donate but I don’t have a job yet. Don’t stop making these videos!
I'd gladly take that junk! keep up the fantastic work! the production quality is always top notch and good luck on the reno!!
I knew ya guys made a triple collab because you all uploaded at the same time ;D
Aw heck yeah! Sorry I'm late for once, was busy today, but *_I WANT THAT WORTHLESS PIECE OF JUNK!_*
Aaand... that's the last time I hope I ever tell another man I can't wait to get my hands on his junk...
Something I REALLY did not think I'd be saying today when I woke up this morning!
Especially considering I was planning on spending most of the day with my grandma, so that could have been... very awkward!
Bless you! Is you mind alright?
I want that junk! Also, congrats on 600k! I never thought I’d find sunscreen so interesting.
Keep up the good work.. 👍 I can understand how hard you guys are working.. good things will come to you guys... God bless... Wish you guys a great future with the channel.. 😇
You are making a good job. keep it going!
İ WANT THAT PİECE OF JUNK
Why ?
One mans trash is another mans treasure. That's why.
I came here when prompted by Derek, and wow. Just...wow! I'm going to go binge watch your library now, and share it with my son!
Congrats on the new workshop, your doing a great job with your content, keep doing what your doing, then you will get more popular
Were some segments here filmed in the new space? It's looking great!
Can't wait to see what the new office has to offer!
I'd love that worthless piece of junk. Great video Andy, love your channel!
I love this show so much, I have tried to watch every video you ever make. And I would definitely want the uv meter
Heyyy, I mean, hi, Andy.
People do watch your videos!
Thank you to you and your crew. Plus, all the amazing collaborations and effort from those special people who helped with lending their space and types of equipment.
From my opinion, I think these videos are suited for the crowd who really wants to learn a thing or two or...follow in your footsteps. From the study of sociology and social psychology, I infer that...most younger generations (my opinion is biased, so don't quote me) want the convenient things. Which...is the conclusion in some of your videos, like this.
"Stick with store-bought sunscreens, not homemade ones."
But your content is really good.
Lots to learn from, note the experiences, your comical crew and yourself, and...yeah, the explanations.
Please keep it up and don't burnout.
I want that priceless piece of junk
if you can't get exotic, tropical coconuts, store-bought is fine

super fine work. a lot of effort. im gonna watch all
I like the honesty in the last 15 seconds. Keep it up!
I see you, Jabrils!
Uh.. you do realize that they were "large coconuts" because you kept the husk on right?
Respect how much work you put into this project! :D
Fail fail often and fail forward. You are the only channel I’ve seen that does this to the deepest level
Whoa something I can actually make
I'd love to win this piece of junk
Maybe Cody from Cody's lab or Nile from NileRed would have liked to replicate non organic sunscreen
Awesome video! I'm a new subscriber. Found your videos, thanks to Physicsgirl. It would be cool to have instructions for how to make a simpler version at home, without all the fancy tools. How fun would it be, to watch this video with a class of students and then actually make our own sunscreen.
Love this channel so educational and fun!
me: :(
Sun: it looks like you need a hug, here I'll give you one! **Hugs**
Sun: There, better?
Sun: Wait where'd you go?
Sun: :(
Sun: Now there isn't anybody to hug me :(
I always get injured trying to open a coconut..
Captor_3D you should try stabbing the holes, I think one hole is severely weaker than the rest
Dhruv Patel but like getting the white part out
Im in love with ur vids! Keep it up!
Sooo high quality your videos deserve more viewsssss ❤❤❤

A lot of great work!
Thank you very much for this interesting video!
Thanks for another awesome video guys!
4:55 now watch me whip
Is sunscreen blackface?
its a tom cruise cosplay
Yes! It's super racist! We have to ban all sunscreen and get cancer!
BuT tHaTs JuSt A tHeOrY, a GaMe ThEoRy.
I mean, if you had UV vision, could you tell apart a black man from blackface? I could hardly tell the difference when they put blackface on a black man.
I was looking for this comment 😂😂😂
I really like that you attempted to measure the transmissive energy through the sunscreen it would be nice to see what energy band the energy is in. IR or just UV.
I just recently stumbled across your channel. Now im subscribed.
Does anyone actually put on sunscreen
Ehm Ofcourse! You can get badly burned otherwise
I PUT IT ON the shelf every spring then away ever fall. that's it though.. well till i seen these vids ;]
Everyday! And I reapply!
I'm ginger, I have no choice.
I want the worthless piece of junk 👋🏼 I want the parts so I can make my own death laser... I mean clock... yeah... clock.
If you are making a death laser, just buy the correct parts and rob a bank later
Just keep doing what your doing... I’m not in need of sun screen by I did watch your production to the end. You are funny and I like the fact that you get your friends in on the action. My only advice would be work out 10 production values and try to have 5 of them in each production over time your analytics will tell you what’s hot and what’s not. Keep up the good work👍🏿
So much effort put in by you guys... Literally all the sweat, blood and money... But very less views as you said, which is sad. You guys deserve so much more....
Make a light bulb from scratch.
planning to someday
How To Make Everything cant wait
How To Make Everything cant wait
Where's my "watches every HTME video" squad? Maybe you should look into things like the app "Tad" that help awesome creators like you make some more money!
Goats are like mushrooms...
This is one of the greatest shows. It's annoying that it hasn't caught on yet. Maybe you need to find more exposure. All you need is one thing to go viral.
New subscriber here. You guys are awwsome! Keep up the good work.
I know a guy that uses a lot of orange stuff on his skin. Maybe as a sun blocker... i don't know. He can probably use that device! Please send it to this address: 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500
Ingmar Hendriks that’s an awful idea to just give your address
Jacob Heape Google the adres before you reply...
20006 not 20500
Best comment I’ve ever read
That guy probably eats a lot of carrots! Google it!
Gimme that junk!!!!
I just read the Wikipedia article on zinc oxide and it turns out it's a good semiconductor as well. Would love to see a simple electronic machine with homemade transistors when the Reset series gets there!
Really digging the new editing style.
I want thaat worthless piece of junk!!!
I want that worthless piece of junk
hey, I love the animations in this video guys!
Keep up the good work. Looking forward to more videos. 👍
I was reading the comments whilst watching the vid and assumed ‘the worthless piece of junk’ everyone was after was actually the UV camera! Nah you can keep ‘that worthless piece of junk’ ;) great vid!
Nice video as always man
Interesting as always thanks for your time.
Loved all of it, bloopers included.
I want that junk!!! Also, awesome video, truly amazing content you guys made
your videos are pretty interesting. Keep working hard and thnx for the content.
You mentioned not getting as many views on your videos. Speaking personally, the thing that turns me off isn't the stories your trying to tell, but more so when it comes to testing the products you end up making. For example, this videos probably could have gone better had you used maybe a glass panel instead of saran wrap. My suggestion for videos overall would be to really make sure you test the products as well as possible, as a faulty test as usually what gets me to click away. Other than that, I love what you guys do. It really allows viewers to learn that we don't have to live a cosummerist life. We can give back to the planet by taking a lot less from it than we need, and I think this is one of the main points you drive home with your videos.
I would like that worthless piece of junk. I really enjoy your videos! Your alcohol series was really fun to watch cause my dad actually makes his own beer and I have been able to help him with it. Keep up the amazing videos!
Many parts of Canada and America have gotten quite hot lately. Even parts of Europe have. This is another great video. I love this channel.
Love you and your videos! And i would love the junk!
I would have loved to see some of those "reflective" ones spread on glass, with a picture or text behind them, then the UV camera used to see how well they were actually doing in a practical application. (since they didn't show up well on skin)
That UV camera made everything look so cool!!
Also, I want that piece of junk
