We set off to make a variety of instruments capable of measuring durations of time, and then set them to the test to see which one is most accurate: a water clock, an hourglass, sundial, candle Clock, or a control of someone's internal clock inside a sensory deprivation tank.

Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

Did anyone else notice she gave the cat a butthole?😂
I was pulling my hair while she made it because at the same time I was calculating orifices for specific amount of water passing in certain time :D

a chemical that does not react with other elements is called "inert"

This episode turned out pretty funny, I love you guys' humor!

I refuse to accept a sundial without an oddly-morose engraved motto.
My favorite is Omnes vulnerant, ultima necat. (All hours wound, the last one kills.)
A fitting on would have been Sine sole sileo.
EmilyExplosion27 Don’t you think it would be a great idea for you to make a video showing us how to make an emergency drinking apparatus to drink out of the toilet in case of an emergency?…
This video was worth my time.
I'll go
Shouldve made an Arduino clock and compared it. Also, Mr. Sun Dial Dude, my heart goes out to you lol.
Answer: inert
Though you may have thought of noble gases and metals, but they do react a little. Inert chemicals do not react at all.
nice video, can't believe his internal clock was so good lol. love you XXX
It is nice to see how you are getting better and better at making stuff.
Also check out this Polish artist who made a working clock completly out of paper
When the dude started the glassblowing the music that played sounds like what you hear during sleep paralysis
What happened to making musical instruments?
He should make a kalimba.
Working on a couple right now!

I want a sundial that's attached to a compass so that it is always correctly rotated.
Also, for bonus points those candle clocks should probably spark periodically, and/or have notches in them.
6:29 omg dude.... get some "label off" spray, you spay that and it dissolves most adhesives without staining, or use some acetone on stuff that can handle it.
We used to cut our selves with those razors at work dealing with a shit load of stickers and tape, now we just spray and wait a minute and then just scrape gently or just lift them off.
Aww I feel bad for the sundial being thrown away. :

Another word for a chemical which doesn’t react with other elements is called an
“INERT” meaning chemically inactive.
Tell Analise that i love her shirt. |-/
The Jinkest ||-//

Unlike me reacting to this video, non-reactive substances are called inert.
Was hes internal clock really that accurate? That's mighty impressive.
Mine is extremely accurate. I can get within +/- 6 minutes to the actual time per day, as long as I know what time it is when I wake up.
I legit started sweating just by watching the glassblowing.
The answer to the question is “Noble gases” or “Inert gases”.
"Noble gases"
Also known as "Queen farts"
A non-reactive chemical is called “inert” or “chemically inert”.
"I like sand. Sand is squishy."
-Dory, 2016
I have a question: How the second is measured in the first place? Is there a prototype or something? In other words: HOW TO MEASURE TIME ???
Started as a fraction of a day, now is defined as "The second is the duration of 9 192 631 770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium 133 atom."
Can we get more of Annalise ?
Dude I forget the name of that song at 5:05 but he fr just brought back memories! “Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping, into the futureee.”
The chick from the candle clock has a TØP shirt what a bloody legend
Annelise?
Another word for a chemical that does not react to other?
Inert
The sundail was disqualified for being too accurate
For future reference when removing the stencil from wood all u need to do is hit it with some heat via a torch or heat gun to make the adhesive to release. Been doing it for years never fails.
You should try to make a speaker from scratch
that's actually very easy
@@e_g4239 okay but how they do it with raw materials and basic tools
All they really needed was 4 gold ingots and a little red stone dust
Your videos need more Sam. She's great!!!
PVC dust in your lungs is extremely dangerous. I only mention because I care about y’all as humans. Awesome videos by the way, love the collaborations with other makers!

Yeah but how to make those clocks without having timer before?
The sundial (with no marks) has "sunrise", "noon", and "sunset". (Noon:shortest). A water drip (or candle) also doesn't have "hours" marked - but you can just count drips (all freaking day) until you get some total count. Say it was 15,000. Then you're *choosing* how many hours you want to have in daylight. "Twelve sounds good" leads to 15,000/12=1250. This many drips per hour. Next day: Make a mark on your sundial after that every 1250 drips. You still don't need to know "angles" or anything - just count. Now realize "Well, crap. We need to do this on the summer solstice - the longest day of the year." And the additional problem "What about night time?" But by going back-and-forth between two or three methods, you can take your one arbitrary decision (How many hours are in a day?) and break it up noon-to-noon and arrive at 24-hour clocks.Which manages for the thousands of years before springs.
I love that you are doing sponsorships with relevant and good content. The answer to the question is "Inert".
Now im scared. Next you will make a lightsaber and kill all other jedi. Also looks like you have an awesome team, good job!
WAIIIITTTT... the telescope was over a year ago?... where the frick has time gone... I need something to keep track of it...
A simple calculator would be an idea.
do you mean an electrical calculator or a mechanical calculator? I could make a mechanical calculator in a few minutes- boring video. Making an electric calculator would require calculus and circuitry, so it probably wouldn't work for a video
an abacus? its a few sticks and beads, not much to make.
I love this idea tbh. A mechanical calculator that handles carries.
A very very basic one could work I@@CarsOfPennsylvania
Don’t you think it would be a good idea to show everyone how to make an apparatus to drink from your toilet in case of an emergency?…
So many wonderful people in this video!! :D I love this community
I bet Andy is porking all of them, including the guy that looks like Fred Durst and Tony hawk had a child .
u weird man
You know whats weird? There might be a planet in far distance universe where 5 minutes are 50 years or decades here on earth...
You have a lot of free time.
Get some rest
Chemicals that aren't very reactive are inert, like the noble gases!
I expected you to wear way more PPE for glass-blowing XD
The Persian water clock was more accurate and easier to operate. A bowl with a hole in the bottom set atop water in a pot. Resetting meant pulling the bowl back on the water.
This should be a tv show
"Inert" -> the inability to react to other chemicals
WE HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD.
instead of shitty music you should do a voiceover and try to explain what is going on especially on the hourglass one
The name of this material is "Noble". Most of the time known pas noble gas like Helium, Neon ect..
5:07 - don’t lie - you sang out the words as he was slipping them through the machine. ;)
The concept of time is a funny thing to me. Like, someone had to create that shit and everyone just agreed to that.
Btw love your channel!
Your avatar...
I found the Inert, sundial amusing, a Noble effort.
Noice
I hate sand it’s coarse and rough and it gets everywhere
I don't think the system works
If you dye your hair are you not allowed in the sensory deprivation chamber?
You know you are early when the video only has 360p.
Eyyy, Twenty one pilots 10:00
It would be nice if you did more than one measurement for each method so that we could know how much they fluctuate/vary (of course not including Joey's method)
Reed's bit was hilarious
14:12 A surprise, to be sure but a welcome one
How long did it take to make each hourglass?
Next how to make a baby.

Sundials aren't really primative some are still used in places in Australia.
The classification of something describes when it was invented, not used.
Ex: electricity is industrial
Atlatls are primitive
Cell phones are modern
Is that a cat nipple? Or.....either way ... That needle!! OUCH!!

Hey what could you do with Oregon Sunstones? If your interested I'll send you some to experiment with. I really liked the obsidian forging you've done. Sunstones have a 6.5 hardness and are glassy crystal so look them up and let me know. :) I'll hook you up bud and if it's possible, they would make some cool stuff.
