I love scar stories!! scars tell a story, the story of what you've been through, what you've survived and the stories you get to tell... some scars have funny stories, some....not. i have a "cool" scar on my left middle finger...long story short...the very first time i went ice skating, i fell on the ice and some...a**hole skated right over my hand, i've been told i was lucky that my finger didn't get cut off and it's been almost 20 years now, i grew, the scar is now kinda small, compared to what it was on a 8 year olds hand... but yeah, scars always tell a very personal, sometimes deep story
This video is so cool, and I have a lot of similar scars to you! When I was around 2 I ran headfirst into a door frame, and I've had a really cool Y-shaped scar on my forehead ever since. I also have a fresh scar from a cat that didn't want to be held. I really like that one because it joins the older scars from other kitties that are no longer here, and it's a nice way to remember them and feel like a part of them is still with me.
*many hugs* I totally get the worries when showing scars in person, and weirding people out. (For me, its rambling about all my diabetes monitoring tech, and showing off my human-pincushion scars.) I think you know when you've found good friends when they take an interest in these important parts of your health journey!

My mom in 1988-ish was in a car wreck among her many injuries and near death.. They used her knee cap to replace her demolished heel. It always amazes me how surgery works.
My first (also of many) scars were the three (mostly on top of each other) that literally saved my life. I’m one of the first infants to have survived 3 open heart surgeries for a particular kind of congenital heart defect back in 1962. I remember when I was 6 being proud and thrilled when my large chest scar finally sunburned. (It previously stayed white while surrounding skin burned.) I thought it was really cool that the scar tissue was alive and could also get burned. LOL I don’t remember ever being embarrassed by my numerous scars. They were almost badges of honor for being alive. I think this was a great topic to discuss Jo as people can be very self conscious of non-perfect bodies. WELL DONE. 😷🖖
Kind of an interesting one. i have chronic illness, and with that in the beginning meant lots of testing to make sure and rule out anything life threatening... and in the right lighting, i can point out many individual blood draw spots on my inner elbow! i also have a scar on my eye, the colored part at the top is actually flat, its an artificial drain due to my natural one failing. this one is fun to freak people out with 😂 ... i also have a couple kitty scars, which now since they've passed they're bittersweet, like they left their mark on me on the outside, as well as my heart ❤💔🐾🐾
Great video, I think a lot of people have scars or marks or something just a little different on their bodies. And yes yes they all so tell a story. Love you ❤️ JO . Keep up the great work.
Only 4 mins in and i had to pause. Somehow describing all these injuries was giving me goosebumps and I couldn't ignore them anymore. I have never had this reaction before. I wonder why now. And the video is 13 mins long... oh boy
Haha I knew Jo was going to have some Hypertrophic scarring 😆 She has so many signs of EDS, I figured I'd see one but I didn't think she'd actually mention a scar poking out
When I got top surgery last year my Nana checked in on me and asked "No scarring?" it was so funny to me. I have two scars across my chest, each at least 14 inches long. They don't remove that much tissue without scarring! I personally kinda like them! It took a lot of work to get that surgery and I'm proud of the results.
I'm am so interested in mental and physical health and I used to watch you a while ago and just refound you! Glad to see your still doing great Just subscribed 😎
I just saw the thumbnail of this vid and another and thought: This girl seems so amazing and happy so I’m gonna subscribe without watching the videos!😊 than i saw a video and love you already!!❤️
When you talk about the removal of the drainage tube, it reminds me of having my tonsils out when I was 20. I did not have a good time at the hospital. They had some sort of clamp to keep the "anesthesia hose" (I know, not a technical term) to my face, caught part of my lip and left me with a scarred lip. Unbeknowst to me, they had almost cancelled the operation because I had so much crap in my tonsils and the during the draining of which, I swallowed a lot of blood. Waking up I was nauseated, which I was cautioned about due to the anesthesia. One of the nurses was annoying me while I was writhing on the bed and I was short with her to say the least. Moments later I realized I was going to be sick but still dizzy from the anethesia and the side bars were up on the bed...I basically vomited on myself. What I was NOT prepared for was that it was all blood. I looked like Regan from the exorcist when the ahole nurse returned with, "Oh god" in annoyance. To which I responded, "Oh right, YOU'RE upset, so sorry" I realize this is a long response but that was just the beginning of crappy stay. I'll tell you the rest if anyone really wants to hear it.
I can sometimes get uncomfortable when my scars are visible, but then I remind myself of how much I’ve gone thru and that my scars are part of me and that there is nothing wrong with scars and they are just proof of our bodies being able to heal ourselves.
Love my scars! My husband and I met over talking about all of our scars and injuries... We are celebrating our 20th anniversary in a couple weeks. Scars are cool! ALL of them!
I had a terrible ankle fracture myself on Dec. 22, 2006 at the age of 47. I've had a total of four surgeries- the original ORIF, the bone graft six weeks later (we have similar knee scars), hardware removal (broken and painful screws) and five years after the original accident, I had a fusion. There were a few scary weeks in the early days where amputation was advanced as a possibility because there was so much destruction from my fall (down the stairs, I fell at the top, landed on my ankle, then slid down the stairs with my foot underneath me). The lower third of the fibula was totally smashed and despite the plate and 12 screws, it was not healing, leading to the bone graft which was thankfully very successful. The scar on the outside of my left leg has been opened three times and so it is kind of ugly and pitted. There is a scar on the inside of the ankle that has been opened twice, a scar where the bone broke through the skin, and a scar on the front of my foot from the fusion. I went from a six inch plate and a total of 12 screws in three places (fibula, tibia and sydesmosis) to a shorter plate in the front of my foot with eight screws. I still set off some metal detectors, and going through the security scanner at the airport is a pain in the neck. The fusion was necessary because there was no cartilage left between the tibia and the main bone of the foot. It was bone on bone and really painful. The fusion surgery went very well and I was lucky enough to have a local nerve block for 48 hours. I remember the pain right after the initial surgery- it was just terrible, despite the pain meds. I would have rather given birth three times than go through that pain ever again. Thanks for sharing your story.
Great video. I have been working on a photo slide show of all my scars, also. I have some pictures from the original time of getting the scar. Thanks for being open about this topic.
Oh drains are awful! I had two drains after my (very exiting) top surgery (double mastectomy for gender euphoria), and when they came off it was dramatic. I have two little scars at my sides and they make me happy because they remind me of the fact that my life is so much better after that surgery. The incision sites are actually small and hidden because of the type of procedure that I had. I love my scars because they remind me that I took my life in my own hands and ownership over my body.
I have top surgery scars that are now barely visible, and I actually wouldn't mind if they were more obvious. They're an important part of me and I'm so proud of what they represent :)
I've never thought of my scars of stories, but that's a great concept! In addition to lots of surgical scars (54 inches in total), I have a couple of 'fun' ones. I have a very tiny one, along with a dent in shin, from kicking a WWII tank. I was hanging from the cannon barrel and managed to swing my leg into the armor plating on the front. Stupid, but I was a kid so that's the way it goes. The other one an ax scare on my leg. I was trying to use a hatchet to separate some boards when I was about 10. It was a bloody mess. My sister had aspiration of becoming a doctor until she saw this. I think the scars we get as kids are often excellent learning experiences for the most part. Nothing serious, but a clear message to 'don't do that again!'
i'm kinda speechless here......the hatchet story...how? like..how????? and what happened after?? did you get stitches? is your leg ok?? that sounds like a really cool story... now, not necessarily in the moment...
@@johndej noooo!! don't be!! i like gory stuff and would loove all the gory details actually! but i'm aware that's maybe not for everyone...y'know? been through a couple gory stories myself..look through the comments for my ice skating story..;-)
I am proud of what I have survived and all of my scars are a reminder of that. The most obvious are the ones from my foot and ankle reconstruction and my hip replacement and other related hip surgeries.
Your first story is SOOO similar to a scar I have above my eyebrow from running into a bus stop when my sister was chasing me xD so glad I wasnt the only one to do this!
My skin used to never scar but now all it takes is a bug bite. But my older ones that did appear when I was younger tend to fade and vanish over time. I actually miss them, they were something I saw all the time, I got used to them, and then they're gone :(
I think, after my birth, I was only for like 30 minutes without a scar.. my little stomach had some issues 🤮 and the nurses didn't pay attention..so my head laid in the acid and basically burnt of my skin. I am 34 now and it's not that visible, but if you know it you can still see it. Thank you for all your videos Jo. Sending virtuell hugs 🤗.
Watched the Inescapable pain video before this and figured it would be a bit more upbeat. And it was. I like my scars. Sorry it gets icky from here. My favorites are the incision to pull my rib out of my lung and reset it, including the dots where the chest tube and drain was. Second is above my thumb where they had to pull it back into position from being pushed back into the fleshy part.
I have far too many scars. Partial hand amputation, partial foot amputee, skin grafted foot, skin grafted leg (3rd-degree burns), scars on arm (burns), scars on the other leg (burns), about 15 operations. Diabetes (both feet not long for this world), neck injurys, shoulders messed up, both knees quickly giving out, but hips wearing out, lower back injury. I could go on for a few more lines ;)
I have one operation scar. It fustrate me a little because after one year, it is still quite red and I'm pale, so clearly visible. But when I see it, I'm also reminded how better I'm now compared to before the operation.
I quite held a submerged notion others would shame me, and few problems exist to my life today save hardening and growth at distal position, hence with weather sometimes sudden to nerve impulse. But, I would not care any video segment. I just like your bold, inquiry...somehow.
I have a scar under my nose. Apparently when I was 3, I was running around and playing tag with the neighbors. One girl who was it was chasing me and managed to catch up amd tag me. Unfortunately, she tagged a little too hard where I fell and busted my nose. Had to get stitches. Thankfully thats all that came from that. I have other scars, but I got those from being clumsy lol
I have 50+ self-harm scars on my legs (some more visible than others). I'm not very comfortable showing them, but it helps when i hear people talk positively about their own scars. x
Cutting? They say women cut in places they can hide it. Some people think it is a condition only existing in women. Most of my cutting scars are on my arms where they can easily be seen. Though if i want to i can always lie about them, but i don't like lying. When i do, i am a farmer and most of the things i grow have thorns so i do get cut up a bit at work, so i can always use that. What is amazing is some psychiatrist don't even know what it is. Especially on the lower arms they think it is a suicide attempt. Did you stop? How?
@@teesmith3460 i don't have a therapist. Even talking on youtube makes me feel better than talking to a therapist. They just make you feel frustrated when you talk of your problems but realize they can't help. Besides, what is to say cutting isn't a good method. With all the medicine people get now adays. All those chemicals can't be healthy.
@@אוריפלסי it's really easy to validate it in you brain (belive me I know) but in the end it makes you susceptible to infection and although it might feel good ultimately it doesn't make anything better. And maybe you finally might get in a better headspace, don't get me wrong you will have really shit days but it is always worth trying to get better
When I was going in for surgery to remove the melanoma from my back, my doctor told me that I would have a scar. My response was “what’s another one? I’ll just add it to my collection”. Between all the surgeries and just my all around klutzyness, I’ve lost count of all the scars on my body. And I can relate to the drain tube, had one after an open heart surgery and when it came time to remove it was given Tylenol and then told I would just feel a slight pinch... still one of the worst pains I have every felt
Most vets have a glorious collection of scars…that they sometimes pull out to compare…thus was that cow hitting my knee full on…thus was that giant cat that clawed me and this was the dog the owner said was friendly trying to chew off my thumb
My 16 year old has a similar heart issue. He was diagnosed with SVT's a few years ago. His heart will go to somewhere around 180-190 bpm out of nowhere, stay like that for about a minute then go back to normal.
My fravite scar is on my shin. I got it when me and my dad got extremely lost in some woods and decided to slide down a bank to get to the path. As we slide down the bank I slipped and slid strait into a tree. :)
I too have a cat scar. She was fighting her brother and used me as a springboard to get to him. 6 inches right down the shin. Still somewhat visible despite it being 25+ years old. And I'm sorry for the loss of Louis (sp?)
I had a biker friend with a false leg from below the knee. His leg fell off on a fast road and it went out of shape. Funniest thing ever was the look of car drivers as they went past watching him beating his leg back in to shape. It was thirty years since but still makes me laugh. Basically if people find you taking your false leg off gross then it's something to laugh at rather than be embarrassed by.
I have a few scars. I have a scar under my nose from a nose surgery as I could not breath through my nose. I also have scars on my knees from falling over and over and over on healing wounds as I was a clumsy kid haha. I have a scar on the tip of my ring finger where my finger was sliced off by a door. Some scratch marks from my cat (he does not like anti-flee meds), and some acne marks. And one big scar on my shoulder from removing beginning skin cancer. So now I’m forever translucent from avoiding the sun and having a big scar to remind me that not being tan is not a bad thing in my case :)
Most of my scars are from cats, or acne, or just stretch marks (those are around my knees as well as hips and thighs). I think they just tell a story of your life. I do have two on the ring and pinky fingers of my right hand, from when I ran over them with a skateboard as a kid. Don't reccomend! There's a couple of scars I hope to have in the future, as they'll be markers of a significant improvement in my quality of life.
The only scar that is prominent out of the 3 operations I have had is my hernia scar from when I was 5... the others being removing a bit of extra ear and Trigger thumbs.. Love your channel by the way..
i like scars. i have a few tiny ones on my hand that i don't even know how i got. and one on my knee that's probably from a variety of repeated childhood injuries; most of my old ones have faded, but this one stuck around. I've also got a few stretch marks on my inner thighs despite being quite skinny; they're probably from a growth spurt that was a little too fast for my whole body to keep up. all my scars and imperfections make me feel a little more human and alive.
Joe am so happy I found your channel I found your channel before my below knee amputation. I am now 3 weeks post op and going through alot what you went through and your videos have been helping me get through this. Just now dealing with a friend who says my fault I lost foot pull up big girl pants and move on. This has devastated me terribly i journal and talk to people but I really want to talk to her about this and how this has effected me. Any ideas or wisdom I can deal with this?
This is definitely making me want to learn to love my scars. The ones on my knees and calf are from bullying and are a painfully permanent reminder of how horrible people can be. It’s been ten years since they’ve appeared, so maybe it’s time to change the narrative.
I have pretty scarred up knees, I’ve had both knees reconstructed twice. Now my knees are a combination of metal and parts of my hamstrings and patella tendons! I also had my drains removed from my knees without any pain medication or anaesthetic- I DO NOT recommend it, it’s truly the most unique type of intense pain 😫😅
I have a scar on my leg when I was balancing on a metal rim around a tree and slipped into a metal rod. Ironically, this happened right before a pharmacy but 7 year old me chose to not go in and seek first aid but instead walk home for 15 minutes and ask my mom what to do. Another scar is from the time I knocked over a vase while dancing in the kitchen. I tried to catch if after it already shattered. It cut deep into my finger, almost down to the bone, but luckily no tendents or major vessels were harmed. Needed 5 stitches. :)
10:20 My cousin was water skiing once. He jumped off the boat and came up saying, "Hey, my finger came off." He held his hand up and showed his bloody hand, missing it's finger. His ring had caught something and it just pulled his finger off, just like that.
I have a couple scars but my favorite one is the one I got falling into a not lit fire pit. I has scrapes up my hole entire right arm and a worse spot where I bend my elbow. That I know have scar that will stay with so I can remember when some said spider and I ran out of the trampoline and fell into the fire pit. (I’m fine now). Also about her knee I had one of the same experiences in my neighborhood with a rock going into my knee and I probably needed stitches but it healed and 🙂 fine
I have many surgical scars on my stomach and all over my head. Two of which were reopened a few months ago due to a broken VP Shunt (I refer to it as a bubble)that I’d had since 1993.
I too have a scar almost in the exact same spot on my forehead! Also got it around 3-4 years old. ALSO got it when my brother was chasing me and I ran into the corner of a door/wall 'xD - I also have SVT! No ablation yet though.

WELL DONE. 😷🖖
I remember when my scars sunburned for the first time! It’s such a weird experience but also a sign that thing’s are going back to normal.
Ahhh I had the same thing fixed in my heart. Life is so much better
I agree you, I have a huge scar on my back and I'm proud of it. I don't want it to completely disappear
Damn girl you’ve had a lot of accidents/ surgeries, I’m surprised you can recall so many lol. Glad you’re here, you’re a survivor
Now we need a tattoo tour! ❤️❤️
Glad to see your still doing great
Just subscribed 😎
Footless Jo = Such a brill person 🙏🙏🏾
Aw shucks, thank you!!
Your videos are amazing and it always makes my day to see you!
I just saw the thumbnail of this vid and another and thought:
This girl seems so amazing and happy so I’m gonna subscribe without watching the videos!😊 than i saw a video and love you already!!❤️
To which I responded, "Oh right, YOU'RE upset, so sorry"
I realize this is a long response but that was just the beginning of crappy stay.
That's one of the best "how we met" stories I've ever seen. :)
Wow congrats
I'm not even 20 lol see if you can beat my great grandparents they were together for 76 years until they both passed away
So crazy! I got a heart ablation too for my heart arrhythmia.
@@EvitaVelerita Yes, I got stitches. It looked much worse that it turned out to be. Basically, I missed the wood and hit my leg.
@@johndej the image in my head is gory....
@@EvitaVelerita Sorry.
I actually miss them, they were something I saw all the time, I got used to them, and then they're gone :(
"so how was your day?"
"well, I was walking my dogs and then a car fell on me. But other than that it was a great day" 😂
Hair looks so pretty!
I'm a new lower limb amputee and I love watching your videos. I'm also in Colorado 😊, I have a few scars myself. Ha ha
found you on my homepage and this was the first video :) love your energy and am now a new subscriber ^_^
I also have a scar on my forehead but mine was from running into a radiator when I was about four as well
I have far too many scars.
" Scar-tours" a bruised version on star wars. U added the info. I stich together poor puns. Lol
Scars are the badges of our life!
Ur pets are the cutest things on earth
I have one operation scar. It fustrate me a little because after one year, it is still quite red and I'm pale, so clearly visible. But when I see it, I'm also reminded how better I'm now compared to before the operation.
When they take out the drainage tube, it hurts!!! I'm so sorry about your Lewis. 💕
Jo you have more battle scars then most guys i know!!!
Footless Jo you are a Beautiful, tough young Woman, I like your Attitude try to keep safer GOD BLESS
I quite held a submerged notion others would shame me, and few problems exist to my life today save hardening and growth at distal position, hence with weather sometimes sudden to nerve impulse. But, I would not care any video segment. I just like your bold,
inquiry...somehow.
Just about to watch just loading my smart TV onto RUclips then watching ur vid
How?
@@אוריפלסי be honest with your therapist and aee if you can find better coping mechanisms
Good vid! Scars are the ruts in the road of your life.
You look so gorgeous in this video !!❤️
My 16 year old has a similar heart issue. He was diagnosed with SVT's a few years ago. His heart will go to somewhere around 180-190 bpm out of nowhere, stay like that for about a minute then go back to normal.
I'm so sorry your cat passed away. ❤️❤️ its so hard to go through
My fravite scar is on my shin. I got it when me and my dad got extremely lost in some woods and decided to slide down a bank to get to the path. As we slide down the bank I slipped and slid strait into a tree. :)
You have the worst luck. Amputation. All the accidents. Car almost falls on you. But you are still so positive
I still have the drainage tube scar too and from the rods of external fixation in my ankle
God bless you sweet art.xxxx
The only scar that is prominent out of the 3 operations I have had is my hernia scar from when I was 5... the others being removing a bit of extra ear and Trigger thumbs.. Love your channel by the way..
I really like the scars from my knee surgery. I know its weird, but I'm glad that they're pretty visible
i like scars. i have a few tiny ones on my hand that i don't even know how i got. and one on my knee that's probably from a variety of repeated childhood injuries; most of my old ones have faded, but this one stuck around.
Maybe try to see them as a sign of your strength, as you survived this. Not as a sign of how horrible people can be.
Wow
I have a couple scars but my favorite one is the one I got falling into a not lit fire pit. I has scrapes up my hole entire right arm and a worse spot where I bend my elbow. That I know have scar that will stay with so I can remember when some said spider and I ran out of the trampoline and fell into the fire pit. (I’m fine now). Also about her knee I had one of the same experiences in my neighborhood with a rock going into my knee and I probably needed stitches but it healed and 🙂 fine
I have the same rock indent scar on my knee, it grew out in a kind bubble way too.
