Chino hates this song because the record label demanded them to release a "catchy / short" song to promote the white pony album. because all the other songs were too slow and long according to them . So an spiteful Chino took the slowest, longest song of the album (pink maggit), made the tempo faster, added distortion and some rapping with the first stupid crap that came to his mind, just to "show those mfers how easy it is to make a hit single". the result was Back to School, and the label loved it.
I just listened to a podcast where Abe showed the demo version of this song to someone and said, ‘with this song we’re taking these kids back to school, because we’re so sick of everyone ripping us off.’
I love how they made this song just to prove how easy it is to make a single just by changing a few things off the fly yet it's still an awesome song. That just shows how much potential Deftones has and that they don't have to make songs that are only meant to be hit singles. I just love Deftones :)
I remember my ex-girlfriend kept sending me this song since she was a hardcore Deftones fan like me and said this was her favourite. I seriously doubt we'll go back together but it feels good to listen to this song and remind myself of the good old times. I hope she's doing fine. :)

When the label added this song to "White Pony," it may have been a commercial decision but it ended up making a great album even better. It gives the album a kind of arc, starting out with "Back To School," which is rousing and fun, and then going through all the mood swings of the album before ending with a "reprise" of the "first" song ("Pink Maggit"), except this time it is more like a dirge, as if the band has been worn out and exhausted and this is their last, cathartic transmission before collapse. It was a brilliant addition to the album, but it wasn't an artistic decision, it was a crass commercial decision on the record company's part that ended up working artistically as a happy accident. Which goes to show you that art is bigger than artists and that there is nothing sacred about the artists vision--great art involves a lot of luck and randomness.

Time goes by too fast, shit, 20 years ago I was in high school listening to this masterpiece on loop, I miss those years of rebellion and innocence. The lyrics perfectly describe how we felt in those days... the kings!
Ugh I love this song, it’s like dark vibes. Like something you can just lay back and listen to on a day off or just like on the weekend. Amazing music 10/10.
Can't believe it's almost 19 years since this was released. It is just insane!! It feels like it was yesterday. Back in the day, when I could sing all the lyrics of this song nonstop, so fluently in spite that English is not my mother tongue. I was 17 then. Nostalgic.
Timothy Domingo And after that, they dusted there hands of the 'Nu-Metal' label. The picked up what they started with White Pony, and went on to test new sounds and styles without destroying the roots.
If they are true to their roots, then they are still nu-metal. However, they still have their own style. But then Linkin Park came in and ripped off everyone!
Musically they've moved on. But in their videos there is still alot of stuff pointing to their origins. The most common example is how often we see them skateboarding in their music videos, a homage to the group's old meetups and the local skatepark.
No. Because they are incompetent to reach the mainstream and that's why they got envious over the ones who achieved it. What you have probably become now
that's bullshit even if it were true, deftones was a nu metal band from the jump and the nu sound is still apparent in some of even their newest material

Fuck yeah! I was young... I mean, 11 when i heard this for first time... Im 33... Still love it... No one song can be listened so many years like this... I mean, a good song lives forever
Always i hear this music i remember my days in school, the way as i interacted with others and i feel which not enjoyed these days as it should, it's a feeling of nostalgia for something i never had, but in own away a good feeling.
Happy 50th Birthday Chino! I thought this song was a perfect mix of the old and the new. I happen to like it a lot, but I understand the band had to evolve. Keep rocking! 🤘
I feel like Generation X and Millennials had the most awesome youth, as they had the most awesome rock bands of all time, like Korn, Nirvana, Deftones and many more, and i feel jealous of that (not in a bad way, is just that i wish i could had experience those bands when they were at their prime). There aren't many bands left that are this awesome and this powerful, and most importantly, that don't transmit that energy on stage. Don't get me wrong, there are new rock bands that are fucking awesome, but bands like Deftones appear once, and i don't believe that an era like that will repeat again, at least musically speaking, and it's such a shame. What's only left is to enjoy them as long as they remain. PD: Sorry if i misspelled something. English is not my main language XD

Fr these days I see kids wearing what he was wearing during the white pony days. Trasher sweatshirts, checkered vans, etc.
Actually he himself is dressed as most socal gangs used to dress back in the 90's but he nor the baned were affiliated with any gang and the look basically was common at the time
Is that why people keep stealing his shoes?
Every time I'm in High school walking from class to class I put some Deftones on and it's the best feeling in the world. You feel like the world ain't shit and you don't give a fuck about school. Damn I wish I was in High school when Deftones was the shit. It still is for me.
Why do people shit on this song?! Yes, it's not better than pink Maggit but it's still a badass song
when you work at journeys you get tired of it
i agree it's an awesome song
people just have bad taste in music that's why
It's better than pink maggot
ShaneDaHorze better than pink maggit
I remember back at the time when RUclips wasn't a thing yet, I was going to an internet cafe in Paris to watch some music videos and to listen to some music. It took some time to download but this must have been one of the very first videos I ever checked online. Great memory :)
Only recently started listening to deftones. I landed on this when I was at work. Binged through around the fur and now white pony. Diamond Eyes is my next listen. I'm so glad RUclips bought me here
Graduated high school the year this album dropped. 20 years....wow. Feeling old.
I love deftones, but this always speaks to me as I have lived and breathed music for the past 39 years. When he talks about "I sift through all the cliques", that's me. I turn up up to a pub, and I'm just bumping goths, metal heads, hip hop heads, indie kids, jazz guys, electronic music afficianodes, rastas, skinheads. All based on our shared love of
*fist b umping
*love of music x.
Still great...one of my all time favorites, even if its kinda sad realizing that time passed by so fast, almost surreal somehow... but the feeling I get about this song never changed.
RAP ROCK. Deftonez try to deny it.
But this is rap rock. And that’s dope.
And nothing to be ashamed of.
Rep that shit
We need a Chino Moreno character in the remake of Tony Hawk 1,2
I love the nod to Kool Keith in the lyrics, fits perfectly too.🎒🖊️✏️
I listened to this religiously back in 2001...helped me cope after my dad died, a few months short of graduation.
Man...I hated school. I honestly have nightmares of going back to highschool lmao.
Kind of like work..
Same everyone was such a fuckface it hurt
SChool is best period of life u suckers ... U have nightmares cuz u are stupid as fuck ,,,
TM87- Metallica best period is maybe between 20-30 years old. You are not a kid, but not too old.
Am i only one who actually loved high school?'
Feels like I'm 15 again when I jammed to this tune while watching it on MTV2 back in late 2000, fond memories 🙂
PROUD!!! To say I walked home sneakerless from one of many Deftones show....Aghhh memories 🤘
Time goes by too fast, shit, 20 years ago I was in high school listening to this masterpiece on loop, I miss those years of rebellion and innocence. The lyrics perfectly describe how we felt in those days... the kings!
Classic song with a classic video, Deftones are such a great band
this video is painful to watch because my whole senior year has been online, and we definitely won’t be going back before the schoolyear is over 🥲
tfw when you're not back to school :(
you have great taste in music for a senior in HS
High school is shit anyways, doesn’t teach you how to live
Welcome to the new era, have fun. Hopefully the next generation wont be as retarded and brainwashed.
@@Dodderyfeline31 nah man highschool is a once in a lifetime experience where you grow as a person
i remember staying up so late to hear this song back in the day when we couldn't get it on the internet
Deftones will always be my favorite band.
1995 - 2005
We were a great generation.
Best TV, Best Films, Best Music and best of all Video Games 😂
For sure my man, all the best of everything
agreed ,every person i met from 2006 seems too attached to effing technology
nah it was boring we were bored all the time
@@therabbithat speak for yourself brah. Legendary age group fashoooo
Music these days can’t compare to this! Deftones for life
Ugh I love this song, it’s like dark vibes. Like something you can just lay back and listen to on a day off or just like on the weekend. Amazing music 10/10.
I've never felt so much nostalgia for a song I've never heard before.
Good old times!! Korn, limp bizkit, papa roach, when MTV used to rocks!! No wifi, no iphones !
Can't believe it's almost 19 years since this was released. It is just insane!! It feels like it was yesterday. Back in the day, when I could sing all the lyrics of this song nonstop, so fluently in spite that English is not my mother tongue. I was 17 then. Nostalgic.
I was in high school in 1992. I kept waiting for nirvana to show up like this. Thank you Deftones.
Deftones się nie starzeje. Było wielkie i jest wielkie. Brawo!

20th anniversary of White Pony.
🤘🏿🤘🏿
The type of shi that happens the day you stay at home:
Real
Its been almost 30 years since I was in school, but I will always remember that sting.
Still love this band. ❤️
Chino actually made this song as a slap in the face to popular nu metal bands of the time by making a hit single with no effort.
Timothy Domingo
And after that, they dusted there hands of the 'Nu-Metal' label.
Sempre que ouço, bate a nostalgia do Colégio, tempo em que eu andava de Skate, bebia, conversava com meus amigos com grande frequência, e não pensava no futuro.
nostalgia pura!
@DOC Top demais 🤘🏼
Deftones tapped into something epic. I hope they live forever and never stop making music.
NOSTALGIA , Tempo bom.... deftones, link park , korn, cool chamber entre outras... full metal.
There's never been a more appropriate time for this song to be blasted in schools everywhere.
I love Deftones. They are amazing live.
Till this day still one of my favorite deftones music videos
0:24 Hey! It's Chris Motionless!
The thing about this video is that Chino actually looks like he could be a high school senior lol.
Played this on my last day of high school
same lol
paris Soares You know this song is literally a joke from the band.
paris Soares thank you for the idea
paris Soares I was the 69th like, lets go!
Same
When this album came out I was in one of the darkest moments of my life, my mom committed suicide for her deep depresión when I was 11 years old in the year of 94, I was severely depressed because of this and I started drinking and taking drugs, Deftones and their music helped me cope those times full of darkness.
My condolences for you loss bruh, I hope you doing well now
@@ticoriburns8201 thanks for your words.
My condolences brother, it's good to see that you are doing well now
I'm sorry 🙏

Chino Moreno is a better rapper than most rappers today...
Agree
use you're brain, feelings, living, is something else. feelings are for the future. or not.
Agree
User Fan idiot
He's one of the most talented vocalists and songwriters of all time.
Fuck yeah! I was young... I mean, 11 when i heard this for first time... Im 33... Still love it... No one song can be listened so many years like this... I mean, a good song lives forever
I wonder how much history was deleted from these comments. Everyone's feelings and thoughts, gone.
So sad

@@psychotrop5909 Exactly! Your heart is in the right place. 2020 took a lot from us, let's take this back!
Hahahaha.
Always i hear this music i remember my days in school, the way as i interacted with others and i feel which not enjoyed these days as it should, it's a feeling of nostalgia for something i never had, but in own away a good feeling.
The camera work in this video overall, and the scenery is just hysterical and amazing at the same time
Happy 50th Birthday Chino! I thought this song was a perfect mix of the old and the new. I happen to like it a lot, but I understand the band had to evolve. Keep rocking! 🤘
is there anyone cooler than chino moreno?
No that's actually impossible.

He used to go by Chino Wong when they first started playing around Sac at The Cattle Club and The Crest Theater.
yes ! yes there is !!
no
I feel like Generation X and Millennials had the most awesome youth, as they had the most awesome rock bands of all time, like Korn, Nirvana, Deftones and many more, and i feel jealous of that (not in a bad way, is just that i wish i could had experience those bands when they were at their prime).
There is still time for you to discover this bands(if you didn't already) and make them 'yours'
Classics and good music never get's old;)
absolutly iam in that generation too 😉
don't worry, Gen Z has plenty good music to go around, we're just on the poppier side
This is all music from my era. I’m now 37. I feel my age had the best because we got two parts of good generations.
@@otisbigsby cheers! i'm 37 too :)
This video takes me back
When you make a song just to please the label and it turns out being one of the best nu-metal/rap rock tracks ever, you know you’re a goated band.
When videos were badass and had something to do with the lyrics.
Kids: I DONT WANT LYRICS GIVE ME HARD BEATS WHAT IS A GUITAR THOSE ARE FOR OLD PEOPLE. (Says the bass kicks, shows them actual bass guitar have no idea what it is.) < the year 2050 xD
