Specifically, they check the instruments and timetables in the driver's seat, as well as signals and signs on the tracks. It seems to be a uniquely Japanese culture to perform this operation. When I was younger, I used to feel that this action was meaningless or embarrassing, but as I have gotten older, I have come to understand the importance of this action. When I am shooting a video, the driver's loud and clear voice gives me a sense of security about safety. It is a little sad to think that this wonderful Japanese culture may be disappearing as the railroads become more and more automated.
