  • There is a flood of questions and concerns around the people that received 2 payments for $2,000 this week.
Was this intentional or a mistake by the Government of Canada?
Let's review the facts. The Canada Emergency Response Benefit is a $2,000 benefit for every 4 week period up to the maximum $8,000 in total. The periods are:
    March 15 - April 11
    April 12 - May 8
    May 9 - June 5
    June 6 - July 3
The two $2,000 payments can, in fact, be what you are entitled to. The first payment could be retroactive for March 15 - April 11 and the second payment for April 12 - May 8.
However, let's keep in mind that the payment maximum is $8,000. So if you received more than you should have, one of two things will most likely happen. Either your last payment over the 16 week period may not be paid or the overpayment will be expected to be paid back during your 2020 tax filing.
What if you know it was a mistake? What if you know you are not entitled to the CERB?
The biggest thing to remember with the Government of Canada is that they do and can make mistakes but they always find those mistakes later. And it is up to the Tax Payer to payback or makes the situation whole. If you have in fact been paid by mistake or you know that you should have not received a benefit it will be caught during your tax filing 2020. The CERB and EI are both taxable income and therefore overpayment will be found at that time and be expected to be paid back.
The best advice is to fully understand your situation and fully understand what you are entitled to. If there are overpayments, tuck that money aside until after the phone lines die down or until all your payments are received over the coming months so you can determine if there was an overpayment.

If you have been found ineligible as determined by CRA for CERB or any other government subsidies such as CEB, CEBA, etc.,. What CRA can do is to direct your bank(s) to return any money you may have in your bank account(s). CRA has so many authorities to collect its debts that may surprise you!

Indeed, but there is no magic wand. We truly believe that everything that can be done has, or at the very least is being considered. This will prove to be the same curse as it always has...too much personal and business debt in the system. If we can get back to spending and investing profits and cash the world would be a much better and safer place.

Hi Mam, Im looking a advice:
I'm on CERB rite now and may be from November switch to EI.
I actually have to go school for a full time program and I'm confused about my financial assistance.
I will get OSAP but confused as I will still be able to get EI during my study with OSAP or my OSAP will effect on EI? I would be very greatful if you could answer this!

I still don't know if my CERB was a mistake or intentional. I applied to EI shortly after being laid off due to COVID-19. I received EI payments ($500 a week) or a total of $1500. After CERB was announced, I received a payment of $2000. I didn't apply to CERB, it just automatically send me the amount. What do I do? I'm worried and I do not want to be fined.

    • @precedenceprivatewealth2872

The EI automatically turned into CERB so you should be good. However, when in doubt it is always best to reach out to Revenue Canada to confirm your specific situation complies.

This CERB payment makes no sense.
How are people who are receiving EI currently receiving this CERB payment automatically.
It states in the CERB info, you can't have both.
I am currently on EI and I haven't received any CERB payments yet.
I don't want the payments anyways.
