Having to use multiple continues does not equal destroying a tough game lol. The game even on Professional difficulty isn't that bad, at least not until having to fight the double bosses on the 2nd to final stage during the 2nd loop with the goddess' bracelet, that's an absolute nightmare largely because of the super strict timer.
I've been able to suffer through a lot of stupidly hard nes games over the past couple years, but ghosts and goblins and ghouls and ghosts are two games I just haven't even come close to beating. So ridiculous lmao
Sorry for the nitpick but this is neither of those games, Super Ghouls and Ghosts to me is harder than the other two due to not having unlimited continues.
Fun fact: There's a stage select code you can do if you have second controller handy. If you use it to go straight to Sardius, you'll be plopped in there with the default Javelin, NOT the Bracelet, but he's still vulnerable to the Javelin, meaning its likely he's vulnerable to the other weapons too. The bracelet really is just a lazy excuse to "justify" loop 2.
the gold armor comes with a shield that can take a hit and you can keep your armor but the shield gets lost. you can also get a shield upgrade where it can take 3 hits.
Thing about gold armor with the bow is it gives you a long invulnerability so if you can time it right you can really trivialize a lot of the difficulty
If you let the red demon do his flying and dance routine without attacking him he will land, do a little jig and then charge at you on the floor and then you can hit him any weapon without him dodging.
What we need in a new G&G game is Firebrand from Demon's Crest as an extra boss. "Oh, you've mastered this game, have you? The Ultimate Gargoyle has a little something to say about that"

Using the level select code and fighting the final boss, you can beat the game without the bracelet. With the original weapon, the lance. Apparently, it must be a game flag that you have it (the bracelet) in order to access that room. Also, make sure you don't inadvertently switch the control scheme or during the credits there is a part where you will die if the button configuration is changed. Leading to glitchiness.
That's not a "javelin". A javelin is pointy at both ends, like a toothpick. That is a "lance". A lance is pointy at one end, with an outward bell flair with a handle on the other end. And before you say, "but lances aren't thrown like javelins" let me ask you this... the shield you get in the final level... is that normally thrown?
I spent so much time as a kid beating this game all the way through on hardest, then again with the fairy bracelet. It felt like the biggest accomplishment.
This was fun to watch ^^ But just as an info as people tend to spread dangerous half-knowledge, as I tend to call it: The bracelet is NOT in the final stage, like someone mentioned in chat. It comes with certain chests you open while wearing the Golden Armor (and Blue Shield I think). So technically you can have the bracelet from Level 1 till the end of the second run.
The reason for gold armor are those sweet invincibility frames while using that ability. There are definatly some points in game where you wanna be invincible for a short time. Shield just suck, but sometimes it can also save you from getting hit.
I think it would've been more helpful to have the armor have different grades of life and they all don't break it one hit. Each upgrade would increase the durability. I realize that the gold armor has the shield upgrade but there are times that even that won't help. Many cheap situations. That would have made it a little less painful and not scare off some new players. I think for some reason the snes version seems the 'easiest' version of all I've played (Nes, Sega, I believe even mastersystem?) Irc.
The shield actually improved the special ability's charging time if you noticed. It looks sucks but actually very useful, not as a shield supposed to be though.
I remember playing this game as a kid it was one of a few games I owned. It is such a hard game. I got very far a few times but never fully completed the game. I distinctly remember raging a few times LOL.
Decent run. The auto controller you are using is actually working against you tho. You need to be able to time your shots with enemies like firebrand that’s why he was giving you difficulty.
The only 3 weapons that give you the edge are the scythe, crossbow and dagger. The scythe isn't the best at the start. You want to have the golden armor equipped so you can unleash that double tornado. The Invincible frames you get from that is insane. Crossbow is really good as a normal weapon but although it chases enemies after you get the green amor. It needs to hit it's target before you can shoot more arrows. The dagger is the most reliable when trying to do damage.
May your skills be praised ! I have always played on normal as a kid and hated stage 3 the most. These nasty jumps over the fiery pits of hell required tons of precision ! Compared to other games from this franchise this is still the easiest game, though.
