Thank you for explaining this; it's definitely something everyone should have at least some understanding on for safety and compliance.

Thank you for the clip. I’m currently working to upgrade a fire detection system at a marine berth. I understand that this wouldn’t count as a building? Does this mean that BS-5839 does not apply? Thank you.

      Hi Andrian,
Very interesting question! The answer would lie in your Fire Risk Assessment as to what level of detection they stipulate. You are right in that it's likely not to meet the traditional categories within BS-5839, however if this is still a commercial premises in any form it is likely to still need to conform but perhaps to an L5 category, which is based on a bespoke requirement/the risk assessor's design stipulations. Therefore, I would fall back to what is stated in that assessment which would need to be reviewed anyway upon commissioning to ensure it meets and satisfies the risk requirements.
      Kind regards,

What’s the difference between 5839:1 2013 and 5839:6 2019? What’s more suitable for an HMO student flat?

OK, this is a long answer, but here goes...
BS5839-1 2013 has been superseded by BS5839-1 2017 and is for commercial premises, whereas BS5839-6 2019 is for non commercial premises. HMO's are covered in Part 6 [BS5839-6] although they often have a BS5839-1 system installed due to the more robust nature of what's required, as well as the BS5839-6 system which is installed inside the flats. What actually goes in to the building depends on the fire risk assessment, which is affected by the quality of the building for fire separation, this is an area where fire risk assessors really earn their money and we have seen many variations of part 1 & 6 systems installed as depending upon where you live the council environmental health and fire officers are involved.
