- With the Labour Party conference underway, Andrew Marr speaks to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband.
Since the conference opened on Sunday, a variety of decisions have already been announced, including a delay to the vote on winter fuel payments which was greeted by boos across the hall.
Andrew asks Ed Miliband about Labour’s ‘sense of mission’ when it comes to green investment.
Ed Miliband tells Andrew: ‘In 11 weeks, we have galvanised industry in a way that never happened under the Tories.'
Ahead of Keir Starmer's speech tomorrow, Ed Miliband also makes it clear that he does not think the PM should 'say sorry' for accepting gifts from Labour party donors, and should instead 'focus on his vision for the country'.
This comes after Sir Keir came under fire after accepting work clothing donations worth £16,200, and multiple pairs of glasses, to the value of £2,485 from prominent Labour donor Lord Alli.

No tax being paid on these 'gifts' either!! One rule for us plebs, another for the political class.
people in business also accept gifts.
@@chrisdvsmith999 The taxpayer doesn't pay people in business`s wages do they.
In our country, the UK, it's customery for the donor to pay the taxes on the donations.
The rented sector is shrinking! It has been for years and will now accelerate! With 21 tenants for every available property in the U.K., this will get worse and push up rents!
So what, if they don't rent the house they'll have to sell, and bingo - one less parasite and one more house on the market.
He does need to apologise . Starmer is not skint like some pensioners will be.
Pensioners who don't drive? who have 100k or so in the bank? who are tory hard supporters as they don't have money issues? I would rather give that money to rise the pay of our hard working life saving junior doctors, nurses and public workers that were working at covid-19 time. I would not be giving freebies to old people chilling at home...........for them that like extra money to go to the casino
@@Raj-ul9myThat's not all pensioners though is it! I agree, take it off the wealthy ones, but not the struggling ones FFS! If it makes you happy to see pensioners on 13k a year have it taken away just as bills rise next month (not to mention possible other cuts like council tax which will massively affect my widowed mother), then your world view is no better than the last shower!!
@@andyjardine8192 Raj hates people who, have for their entire lives, paid into this corrupted system and now that they are free from it he thinks taking from them is ok when I just presented 2 things that would cover what he asks for. Sickening if you ask me. I bet he doesn't have a problem with Kier and the rest of them having heating allowances for both their homes and I bet he doesn't care about all the other benefits our disgusting political leaders get.
I am sure the likes of Richard Branson and those pensioners who use it to pay their bar bill at the golf club will really miss it. Let's see what Labour do over the next few years to support people in poverty, not just pensioners, I suspect there will be big changes but we need to allow time it's only been 11 weeks and much of that was taken up dealing with the FaRage riots.
I agree
They all do it... we're debating individual transgressions, when the whole system needs reform.
"That's what matters," says Ed ... 'it doesn't matter that we all feather our own nests, and those of our doners, at the expense of public integrity, and fundamentally, at cost to the taxpayer'. 😡
Ed how about joining our civilised society! 😡😡😡
Oh, Ed. Such a disappointment to hear you defending all these gifts. Labour is devoid of morals and decency.
We pay through the front door. She gets paid through the back door. Make of that what you will!
"Small modular reactors"??? If just one of them runs away, what then? Blame the Tories.
Come off it Ed, Don’t accept gifts, they come with strings attached. And ist it time that Labour grandes gave the title back? NoSirs or Ladies or Dames thank you and that includes Starmar too. No Labour member should be saddled with the title of Sir. Citizens please
If I need shoes I have to go without something else that month . And I work full time

Starmer received large gifts that he did not declare. I know this won't be mentioned by the Labour Broadcasting Corporation, even though they couldn't get enough of pontificating about Boris and his wallpaper.
have u received gifts?
@@Raj-ul9my Yes but not from special interest groups and not as Prime Minister...
Well said. LBC desperate to defend the indefensible.
If I accepted gifts in my line of work I could be sacked under conflicting interests. I don't understand how it is ok for an MP let alone a Prime Minsiter to do it?
Are you a public sector worker? You need to declare gifts and make a judgement where conflict of interest is. It is isn’t a straight forward sack like you suggest
But its politicans who decide the ruies and laws. They get over double the average wage, second home allownaces and a parliamentry credit card.
The system is rotten. @deelawdazhahs1078
I worked in the Public Sector and received annual allowances for shoes(walking miles), replacement glasses(certain safety style), dry cleaning and laundry vouchers (to clean uniform) if I moved house I received a days paid leave to move house and if I went on a course I could claim fuel allowance that was more per mile than I used. But yes, I had to register any gift given( like box of chocolates at Christmas) and await clearance to say it was in order to eat them, so I’m not throwing the first stone at this lot.
Because a politician is a totally different role to any other regular employee. Did you have to campaign to get the general public's support who then voted for you to get your job or were you hired by an individual private interest? Political donations are a thing and have been for a long time. Why do you think political parties charge membership fees?
Did you actually make a fuss when the Tories were rife with gifts, so many hidden? Check out the donor's 'help' to Johnson, especially paying £50,000 for his wedding !
Take you back into the stone age
Hes a terrible speaker, he hasnt a clue what hes talking about. NUMPTY
Just as corrupt as the tories. Even worse because they said they would stop it.
How can we get him to get a decent perspective and stop vomiting this drivel
Starmer is certainly in Politics for the right reasons....himself......What they don't understand is if high taxes created success, the UK would be booming. The reason the Country is in trouble is because the highest Taxes in 70 years are destroying the economy. Its the welfare state that's the real problem, no economy can afford to have 9.7 million people between the ages of 18 and 65 economically inactive.
It is called Corruption: fraudulent

Westminster Labour Leader Keir Starmer has an annual salary of £166,786, he doesn't seem to think it's enough money to live on.
Sky news 19 September 2024 reported, Westminster accounts project reveals that Westminster Labour leader keir Starmer received £107,145 in gifts, benefits and hospitality.
More than any other MP.
Second on the list is Labour MP Lucy Powell with £40,289.
Starmer said we have to take tough decisions cutting the winter fuel payments of 10 million pensioners.
Is Labour trying to increase the winter death figures and save money on pension payments.
At least we know that Starmer will not have to make the choice between heating or eating in the cold winter months.
On a local, regional, national and international level, Labour make things worse!

What is really diappointing about the "gifts situation" is the perceived implication that Mrs Starmer will be wearing ASOS dresses. The least one one would have hoped for is Phase Eight. Our politicians and their spouses just do not have standards! 😄
Give him a burger. Until he can prove he can eat one he shouldn't be in a senior role.
My generation (pensioners) are the richest demographic in the UK by a huge margin ! We benefited from cheap housing, final salary pensions, early retirement on full pension from public sector jobs, massive profits from house values, and a triple lock scheme which guaranteed bigger pension rises than workers pay rises. And yet my contemporaries are whinging about losing a £200 energy payment when young parents can't feed or clothe their children.
Not every pensioner is wealthy , especially those born before 1951 for males and before 1953 for females . Not everyone retired early or had private pensions , those on the full basic state pension of £169 . 75 per week are struggling ,. While those who retired after 2016 receive £220 . 20 a week .
I don't disagree with your position or mine (although I have to live simply) but there are so many pensioners that are marginal. Totally on board with you re young families that are struggling.
Then you were very lucky, majority of pensioners did not have your lifestyle or the luxury that you had...I'm 66 still working full time and yes own my home ...and it wasn't easy.....but I worked 50 years ...this policy is fundamettaly wrong....so live in the real world and open your eyes...
