I would love to see a video specifically on the writing contest!
Thanks, Lindsay. Yeah, I thought so. When I was editing this last night, I knew I didn't do a good job explaining the contest. Just added this topic to my "to do" list. Maybe this four-part series will turn into a bonus fifth episode where I do a better job showing the contest... Thanks for watching and stay tuned. I'll get better at video with practice - I hope! :)
I felt this way too! Here it is for anyone else who wants this too: ruclips.net/video/46cEHf0UoOU/видео.html Woohoooo!
After 9 years of teaching English to high schoolers, I've guiltily had to adopt a few of these ideas, so I thank you for 'permission' to make life-saving adjustments! I have LOVED your other ideas that were new to me! I appreciate your enthusiasm and wisdom!
Oh, Michelle, this is a guilt-free RUclips channel, for sure! Be sure to check out the next episode that I just uploaded today. It'll give you a concrete plan to give great feedback to your kids while giving you much more free time on nights and weekends: ruclips.net/video/sEFZedSW0I0/видео.html
Your tips are good. As a retired high school teacher of 30 years, I've seen more than my share of English teacher burnouts due to the burdens of grading assignments. Though my focus was mainly Social Science, I had already used a few of your ideas in slightly different ways. Will direct some of my old student teachers here as well as other teaching peeps...
Fantastic, Albaby650! Thanks for spreading the word. And congratulations on your retirement - enjoy! :)
Thank you so much for choosing this mission to help teachers. I am a first-year teacher, and this is exactly what I needed to start next year so much more efficient than this one.
Lovely
I've shortened the quizzer grading down even further. I simply walk down the aisles, collecting their slips (I cut paper into fourths), turning them up or down in my hand based on correct or incorrect. They watch the direction of their paper and know in two minutes if they've gotten their points. Easy!
Smart! Instant grade-o-matic move, Theresa. I may have to steal this idea. :)
That's good. Go checkout jack.smith_07 on Instagram, he has confirmed to be that he is very reliable and efficient in solving all hacking related issues, my Facebook account was hacked and jack got it recovered
But want a student want to know Then why they missed it? Cause some drama?
Amen Laura! With my kids, sometimes I grade 'the attempt' or 'the improvement' over 'the accuracy'. And I already know it's a lost cause with the reading at night. So instead of intense bellringers, we play Kahoot! as an informal assessment and be done with it. Enough already
I love it! I agree. Most of my billion grades come from discussions, projects, and presentations.
Ok that's good, go checkout jack.smith_07 on Instagram, he has confirmed to be that he is very reliable and efficient in solving all hacking related issues, my Facebook account was hacked and jack got it recovered
I use similar grading hacks in my science classes. For my reading assignments I give 3 question quizzes (3Qsquared) and they need to get 2 right for 100%. If they get all 3 right they get a bonus point. Super quick to grade and it keeps them honest about the reading. Unless its a lab, most of my homework is graded for completion, not accuracy. I tell my students that its ok to get questions wrong on the homework as long as you attempt them. I agree that it is not possible to grade everything, but choosing different student work intermittently keeps them on their toes because they never know what could be graded. ;)
Michael Wall Loving 3Qsquared, Michael, and I'm on board with a bit of unpredictability when it comes to grading. Great strategies!
Thank you so much for sharing! Grading papers is sooo overwhelming. So overwhelming. One thing I learned was to focus on ONE thing at a time, especially when grading writing!
Happily in the Middle Absolutely! How do we eat that elephant? One bite at a time, my friend.

I like how you provided many different examples and still keep the kids working. Awesome ideas
Arodys Thanks so much, Arodys. Glad you found my channel! :)
One question quizzers have changed my life! My kids almost think of them as a game. I make three different versions: easy, medium, and hard, so they sometimes get away easy and sometimes not.
My kids get surprisingly excited about quizzers, too, booked4theweek! It's such a small thing but makes some of them so happy. Glad these are working for ya! :)
Yes!!! Writing contest video!
Thank you so much for those ideas and especially for your enthusiasm and positive energy you transmit. After more than 20 years teaching, people like you inspire me to get the best out!
Juana Barrado And thank you, Juana, for Warnock and commenting. Glad you’re here! :)
Yes please upload a video on writing contest Laura.Love you!
Absolutely, Marilyn! Here you go: ruclips.net/video/46cEHf0UoOU/видео.html :)
I’ve been a science teach for 25 yrs and I had to make some adjust to get my family life back
1- select what you will grade
2- test all concepts but do not grade all these concepts
3- 5 min quiz with one word answers thst student could grade by exchanging papers
4- label diagrams should the parts of hearts or lung
5- collect more grades than is needed
6- when I test a concept and too many kids fail I curve the grades mainly on end of the year exam
Love the advice! Thanks for sharing! I’ve taught middle school and I wish I would had your hacks, I would have saved so much of my time and energy! Keep sharing!
For sure, LearningWithLa. I'm trying to help our newest colleagues figure all of this out WAY more quickly than you and I did. No need for us to individually reinvent the wheel over and over and over... Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
Love this video and your hacks! You are my go-to TPT guru for all things American Lit. I tried your one-question quizzers for Of Mice and Men and my students loved them just as much as I did - so easy to grade! I love the Crazy Essay Week idea - so good to help kids practice, but also give them a chance to do some editing/revising and not kill me. You're amazing. Keep the tips coming!
Awesome, School 4 School! It's so gratifying that the hacks I use in my room and working for you, too. Success! Episode #3 will be up on Sunday. :)
I wish I had an awesome English teacher like you when I was in school! 😁
Ah, MsSaraBug, that's nice of you to say! I'm doing my best to spread ideas and English teacher love...
Laura, thank you! I've been following your blog for about 3 years now, and I have never been disappointed with any of your work. Your wisdom has been so helpful and I am so grateful. I wish you a fun and sane new year! M~
marilyncmickey Thanks, Marilyn, for this note and your ongoing support. As you already know, my RUclips channel is by far my least productive platform, but I'm t-r-y-i-n-g... Here's to a great 17-18! :)

I wish I had 10% of the passion you have for teaching. You are an inspiration to future teachers. I'd rather keep flying:-)
A flyer's gotta fly, William!
I kinda wanna show this to my math professor as a hint xD "GRADE OUR STUFF, PLEASE" he is slow as molases, i swear! Awesome video!
Good
So fun to watch these, Laura. I miss you at Amador!
Jennifer Zuanich Ah, thanks, Jen. I miss my AV peeps, too! Give my love to the gang. xoxo
Loved this video! Thank you; these ideas will help me to tame the avalanche of papers this year. Succinct video; ❤️ it! Just enough background info and then right into the hacks! Obviously, you are good writer (and teacher); you know how to edit and present. Your students are lucky to have you!
Nicole Frohnapfel Thanks, Nicole. Yes, I try hard to quickly get to the point but do still catch myself rambling sometimes. Those videos that make us sit through 10 minutes of fluff to get to 30 seconds of useful content drive me nuts. If I ever start showing you what I ate for breakfast or talking about my trip to the dentist, please slap me.
ok the quizzer is really genius! I gotta do that
I'm from Mexico. I'm not a teacher but you gave me such a good vibe that I watched the entire video. The way you talk and explain the hacks makes me wanna be one of your students, lol. I never had a teacher like you, so I'll be in love with your classes for sure. 😅
Thanks so much, Ivan! Glad you found the content interesting. :)
I am an English teacher and it is brutal! I too can attest to the pile of essays waiting and waiting and waiting for my attention. I have a pile of those breathing down my neck right now but I'm going to mark for competence. Thanks for the advice! 😂
Latoya Bolt I feel your pain, Latoya.
*I can see how fast her brain works! I’ve just got a job within the psychology department of my university and I’m trying to keep up 😬😂*
I used to read on websites on the internet when I was a kid to see how teachers think when grading so I could improve my grades as a student. It worked. Just wanted to experience that again.

As a student a some teachers grade homework on accuracy. I have a teacher who asks for about 6-7 assignments which we have to turn in a week but she doesn’t update grades for 3-4 weeks and on the last sunday she grades for 10 hours so she can get everything done. I believe there is time and place on grading homework assignment on accuracy but having us students trade papers with a partner and grade that way or grade 2 problems out of 5 is a good way to grade on accuracy
im a student but im watching these to see what y'all are up to... thanks
See, THIS is why you left teaching. That ADORABLE dog!!!
Love the ideas for peer feedback! Might use that with my students for grammar/punctuation in writing
LOVE the idea of only grading some of the work!
Indeed, Brie! :)
Thank you so much! I love your resources!

Awsome!! I should have come across your channel before the year began. Now I'm suffering, but I'll catch up
Stay strong! :)

You are amazing. Does anyone know if there are any channels showing similar content more relevant to teaching science at high school (age 11-16)? I really need these type of tips for science.

I'm a math teacher, I grade most homework on completion and simply discuss the most common errors in class. Math homework should be about practice and assessments on how well they have learned it
Oh, a math teacher! Let's switch stacks, Acinomnieves3. ;)
Laura Randazzo trust me that's the exact reason why I changed my mind about being an English teacher! Not sure why ppl get hung up about completion grades, usually the same ones who say never to smile
I am so glad I found your channel.
Me, too, minipax! Glad you're here. :)
So am I.. Jack Smith is a good hacker.
Omg, it's my lucky day-- I found your channel!
Glad you're here! :)

This is my 15th year and I understand burnout. This past year I gained 90 dual credit students for a total of 150 advanced kiddos. All of my classes are writing intensive. I loveeee my classes, but spending my Saturdays grading essay after essay honestly just made me pretty bitter, especially when I'm paid the same as someone who clocks out at 3:25 M-F. Before school starts this year, I want to incorporate even more hacks and reclaim my weekends!
Thanks for this incredible content!
traeisha My pleasure. Thank YOU for watching! :)

This video is very helpful! Thank you 😊
You're so welcome, Nicole. Thanks for watching! :)
Do you give completion credit for the 2 essays (in crazy essay week) that you don't grade? My kids would say "so I did it for nothing?" Then, I feel frustrated that they don't understand the concept of practice and also like a bad teacher because I am not grading it.
Stacey Edzwald Yup, Stacey, you've got it. They all get the daily writing completion points for giving a good-faith effort on the Mon. through Wed. first-round drafts. Without that, my kids would definitely ease off the gas, too.
I am thinking about Crazy Essay week. Are they text-based essays or do you just give them a prompt?
Career-changing new teacher, here, with a question for anyone who may have a good answer. I agree that teachers can't and shouldn't grade everything. But what do you do with student work that doesn't get graded? Do you just toss it? Do you give it a point value for participation and return it? Do you do a little bit of both? And finally, do you ever have students approach you and say, for example, "you never returned XYZ assignment" and if so, how do you handle that?
I know the above is a loaded question but any feedback anyone could provide would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Brandon Zurvalec Great questions, Brandon, and welcome to this side of the teacher’s desk. I do a little bit of both. In 20 years of teaching, no student has ever asked for a paper like that, but if it did happen I would probably tell that student that the assignments were sub-par overall as a class and I decided not to include them in the grade book because it was clear to me that I needed to re-teach that skill set. Again, this hasn’t ever happened, but it is good to have a plan. Again, welcome! So glad you found me.
@@laurarandazzo1158 Thanks so much Laura! I'm glad I found you too! But yeah, that approach makes sense and I have no reservations about adopting it into my teaching practice. Thanks again!
You are awesome! Thanks for the advice.
I think you're awesome, too, Edna. ;)
If you're having a low school grade, I will recommend jack.smith_07 on Instagram.
Go follow and text him now.
Hey! Thank you, Laura! I enjoy watching your videos from Afghanistan. I kind of lost interest in teaching English. I'm enthused again! :)
These are great ideas!
Love this.
You are a gift.
Interested in writing contest instructions!
Jennifer Gilmore Gotcha, Jennifer! Stay tuned for a bonus episode #5 dedicated solely to a deep dive into the writing contest process. :)

Have you worked with Standards Based Grading? And block schedules? Any tips if you have would be welcomed.
Happily (I'm guessing), Sarah, I haven't yet had to wrangle with Standards Based Grading, so I don't have much advice there. Block scheduling, though, has been an interesting and most good adjustment as I moved from teaching in Calif. to Idaho. I wrote a bit on this topic here: laurarandazzo.com/2016/11/05/tackling-the-block-schedule/
Hope this helps!
What does ruberick mean? I'm not familiar with that term.
Um Ibrahim Hi there! A rubric is a pre-determined scoring sheet that helps make the grading criteria clear for both the student and instructor. If you enter “rubric” into Google, I’m sure you’ll find lots of options. Happy hunting!
Hi Laura!
First I want to thank you for your amazing content. Im studying to be a Choir Teacher and I’ve been a fan of your channel for a while now and I’ve added lots of your techniques to my toolbox for when I set foot in a classroom.
My question js, you mentioned speech based assignments. I know musical assessments and speech assessments have their differences, but how do you grade those if you’re not grading the manuscripts??
Thank you so much for your time!
Matthew Ryan Ross Glad you’re here with me! For speeches, I still use a rubric and score as the kids present. By the end of each class period, the kids who presented that day get my feedback and comments. The power lies in a good rubric, for sure.
HI MS. RANDAZZOOOOO!

phonic fox JIN!!! Nice to "see" you. :)

What is an SSR?
Great question, Kristin! SSR stands for Sustained Silent Reading. It's a strategy to help students build text stamina and, hopefully, a lifelong love of reading as a source of entertainment and information. Here's a blog post with more details about how I've used SSR: laurarandazzo.com/2016/08/09/making-ssr-work-for-them-and-us/
I have a few videos on the YT channel about this, too. :)
I wish I could change our assessments!! On a team we do everything lock and step- but I teach geography.
Sarah Robert Oh, I hear ya, Sarah, but no matter what the department requires you gotta find a way to turn those comments into codes. Total. Sanity. Saver.
Hey can you go message jack.smith_07 on Instagram, he has confirmed to be that he is very reliable and efficient in solving all hacking related issues, my Facebook account was hacked and jack got it recovered
Laura...what Lindsay said on the writing contest! I love it!
Roger that, Cathy! I'll circle back around on that one, for sure. :)
The Quizzer sounds awesome, but how would you deal with the chronically late or absent student. They're likely to get the answer from other students via text.
Hey, LeNard, great question! This is so easy to navigate. I just give those kids who need a make-up quizzer a different question altogether. Once you get used to the routine, it's easy to find four or five questions per chapter to use as potential quizzers. I'd never ask the same question to that late kid - this teacher wasn't born yesterday! ;)
You know what's funny, I'm not even a teacher I'm a student that grades stuff for her teacher that is rewarded with money. You know how it is to grade more than 60 papers every day after school?
I hate when teachers choose which ones they want to grade. It’s so stressful..
Nah, Olivia, just think of it as a game show. :)
When you wish you could send this to your teacher.
ancala Why wish? Do it. He/She will thank you. :)
Thumbs up from a teacher! Just include a thoughtful note that you thought they would enjoy Laura Randazzo and all she has to share with us!
@ancala
This scares me
