Hi Ryan, I am watching your new video and like it a lot. We were planning to stay in Ginzan Onsen for 2 nights in March (at Notoya). I contacted them one year in advance and wanted to book, but they told me that they accept reservations only 6 months in advance. On the day where the reservation started, I woke up in the middle of the night, to make a reservation as soon as possible, but it was already fully booked 😞. So I really dont know how one is able to make a reservation there 🙂. At first, I was dissapointed, but since, I have seen several videos of Ginzan Onsen, and this very small place is so extremely busy, that I wouldnt enjoy it there. So I am very happy with the ryokan we booked instead, in the snow country of Niigata.
Now I am curious to see the ryokan you are staying in. Can you explain the meaning of the statue at 11:00 in the entrance of the ryokan ? We see this often in Japan, and always wonder about it.

Now I finished watching your video. The ryokan you stayed at looks really good, the food looks so tasty. And to have an onsen on the roof terrace is amazing. The only thing I would mind, is the bed. When I stay in a ryokan, I love japanese style rooms, with tatami mats and with a futon. I dont know why, but my sleep is much better when I sleep like that, than on a bed.
Anyways, thanks a lot for another very good video. I like your attention for detail, like sharing the colorful paintings on the ryokan exterior, or pointing out the cute tiles on the street of Ginzan Onsen.

That statue is tanuki, a Japanese raccoon. The word "tanuki" (Japanese raccoon dog) is considered lucky in Japan due to a play on words. In Japanese, "tanuki" can be broken down into "ta" (他), meaning "others," and "nuki" (抜く), meaning "to surpass" or "to remove." Together, they form the phrase "to surpass others," which is why tanuki are popular as symbols of good fortune. You might see in local Japanese places.

Ginzani very crowded because the place is small, also number of ryokan is limited making it almost impossible to reserve. I was lucky to get the canceled room. I think going there on a day trip via Yamaga stay is better.
