After a life of "irons", "glass" and some "Red Dots", I am now thinking something different... a Vortex Prism.
Looking at the Spitfire x3.
My Aimpoint CompM4 gives me 80,000hrs of battery life at what I would consider mid brightness. That’s over 9 years of battery life. I’m still on my first battery I installed about 10 years ago. When put away I just turned the dot down to minimum brightness and it’s still going strong.

I have a hard time with red dots. I have to use my dominant eye and close the other one or it takes me forever to aim.
I got a 3x30 prism scope and used the handrail/optic mount with a back iron sight that I can use through the bottom as backup
Thanks for all the info. I am picking up my first optics and debating between a red dot or prism scope. As a long life computer geek and full time office desk worker, I dont have the best vision. Seem like a prism scope is the choice for me.

Let’s talk astigmatism, with one of those things it turns your pricey sight with a tail or rainbow in your sight. By the way a lot of older people have astigmatisms. So etched glass dose not do this.

You suck at forming coherent sentences
It sound like you all prefer red dots but which one would you recommend for someone with astigmatism? I purchased a vortex strike fighter 2 and the red dot is too fuzzy for my liking. I was leaning towards getting the spitfire but this video sounds like I shouldn’t go with that one...
Holographic sights have less fuzzy dots usually.
For me, the biggest drawback of a prism compared with a red dot is the limited eye relief. This become a problem specially with a x3 magnifier.
There are a few easy answers to this and Vortex can provide all of them. If you want a prism, use the Spitfire HD Gen II and mount the Venom Red Dot on top. You have the best of both in a very small lightweight package. If you want a large 30mm objective red dot, use the StrikeFire II and easily add a 3X magnifier that even flips out of the way, when not needed! I have both setups on different platforms and could not be more satisfied with the results.
Do they make a prism that will mount to a 3/8 dove tail rails?
Get a conversion rail, they mount onto a smaller rail while offering a bigger one.
basically the best setup for me is red dot with back up iron sights, i can hit a target out to 300 meters with irons and i don't see me shooting anything further than that.
I have so much respect for people who can shoot past 100 yards reliably with irons. I can't even tell if I've hit something at that distance without magnification.
Do you find it easier to shoot at 300 with your irons instead of your dot?
@@iank6897 its not easier, you can basically hit anything at some crazy distance with a red dot really fast but with enough practice you can use irons with great confidence

I went wit a 3x
I don’t even have vision issues and I like the prism scopes as much as the iron sights the red/green lights just bother me
I'm interested in a prism. Just in case the battery goes, its still got a POA. Bit of a price jump compared to a dot though.
I can focus a prismatic scope, whereas I can't focus a RDS. Getting one that enables possibly clearer vision on-target than just obscuring the target with a bright dot and my left eye which is garbage - big advantage.
5m in and so far they have totally made me regret getting the Spitfire lol

@@CarlPapa88 Biggest issue for me was it actually made things look slightly farther away than with the naked eye. I've since replaced it with a red dot and magnifier.

The original spitfire was far more flexible with its low mount: The AR version is very limited application
2:15 "and they're very low cost". I don't know how much this guy makes, but $250-$350 for a few ounces of aluminum and glass is not what I'd consider "very low cast".

Compare it to other high end options on the market and it is cheep. Rule of thumb is spend as much on your optics as you do the rifle. Why own a Ferrari with a 4 cylinder motor. You got to pay to play

Why is everyone worried about using an iron sight with prismatic optics? Prismatic optics always "work", these concerns are more relevant to the red dot. I'd like to see same thematic video in 2022/23.
i don't see the point of a 1x fixed power optic, if I'm going to hang the weight of a scope on my gun it'll be a variable power unit something like the Burris MTAC 1-4x24mm Illuminated Riflescope you do lose a lot of battery life though
I agree that a 1x prism is a bad idea, but honestly LPVO are the Swiss army knife of the optics world. You get some magnification, and close to 1x, but it's not as easy use as an actual red dot or holographic, nor is it as easy to transition between qx and magnified like a red dot+magnifier, and LPVOs are outrageously more expensive than prism scopes or even comparable non-LPVO magnified optics.
Best set up right now is a medium range scope (2.5-10, 3-12, 4-16, etc) with an offset red dot

That’s a lot of weight though, and application always differs. Nobody needs 12x zoom for home defense.
@@jackstoutamore8541 not really, a micro red dot and an offset mount are like 4 ounces, and no one said anything about being strictly home defense? And the fact that application differs is exactly why you want the best of 1x and the best of magnification without compromising on both like an LPVO does

Oh you just stated that that was the best setup, while my example was that it wasn’t optimal for home defense.

Replying to your original post of having something with variable magnification, a lower magnification optic with an offset weighs as much as many of the red dot + magnifier options out there, gives more capability, and is inherently faster to use
If you don't want any magnification then obviously don't use any

I love vortex products and love the customer service even better. Sadly I was forced to buy the swampfox blade instead of the gen2 spit fire.
Auto on and auto off on the swampfox. 25mm on the swampfox and only 20 on the spitfire. 200 bucks more for the spitfire thanks to optics planet sales. 😟
