What a great tip. Amazing how good the result sounds without any tinkering. I have learnt so much from yourself and Christian.

@@PaulThomsonMusic i like that you have a more compositional and musical approach while Christian is more into sound design and soundscaping. We learn different things from both of you, and your obvious passion for music is very communicative!

Wonderful tip! Thanks for the reminder. I haven't written a true retrograde since music school. There are so many techniques in composition that it's easy to forget to use them while writing! Can't wait to try this on a few of my tracks. It's time to write variations on them anyway. Thanks Paul as always!

I totally agree - I spend a lot of time trying to remember to use things while I’m in the midst of writing!

This is most interesting because I heard of a guy who used to do this with his own music and essentially would simply play or rewrite his lines upside down and backwards - not really retrograde necessarily but talk about interesting. Of course he would have to readjust some of it since lines might dip too far down or soar far too high. But what that would be called - who knows. Had a friend who used to play piano pieces this way for fun - just taking standard classical piano pieces and play them from the end, turning the music upside down and play last page to first page. Certainly created some interesting sounding pieces. Didn't always work, but sometimes some really nice sounding pieces would result.

I learned this ages ago and completely forgot about it! Appreciate this info and your professional, warm presentation. I also love hearing the likes of yourself saying something like "this is obviously very rough, basically garbage" and I'm out here like "oh boy I wish I could make my music sound like that" 🤣
Just gonna assume that the more Spitfire libraries I buy, the better I'll become 😛 (joking of course. But I do love SA's libraries...)

I think Ludwig Goransson did something like this for TENET. But he also reversed the dynamics. I think it was for Meeting Neil. Although you wouldn't know unless you watched the video of him talking about it

@@PaulThomsonMusic yeah he wrote the notes along with the dynamics backwards for the players. So when he played it in reverse, it would sound forward and backwards

Дорогой Пол...отличные шпаргалки на каждый день.хочу предложить Вам создать шпаргалку-это плакат который каждый музыкант -оркестровщик смог повесить у себя в студии где работает.Суть...например -BBC SO.написать все инструменты.на против них -буквой -D-дублировать-с каким инструментом можно дублировать.и буквой V-варианты с чем ещё можно как вариант.у Вас есть видео -Piano/Celesto -Harp...и.т.д.

can you make a video about working with tempo across a whole arrangement? I like the chords and melodies i come up with but i can never work out how to work with tempo. If i record everything to a click it doesent have the ebb and flow i want but if i completely turn the click off and just play off feel it always becomes a disaster when i they to orchestrate more stuff ontop of what i played in. I know theres things like beat mapping but that only works when you have a steady pulse. Ive thought about recording everything to a click and just automating the tempo of the whole project after the fact but alot of the time when im playing off feel i switch up the time signature and phrasing for just a few bars and stuff like that and i feel like it would be tedious to automate everything after the fact. Thanks

Spitfire is going backwards! Can we expect your prices to follow? Checkout Haydn's "Palindrome" Minuet & Trio if you want to see this done properly.
