Title: Ég er frjáls (I am free)
Elsa: Hildur Vala Baldursdóttir
2:27 - “lætur fjöllin virðast blá” I’ll be honest, I’m not entirely sure what this passage is supposed to mean.
The line translates literally as “(distance) makes the mountains look blue”. Now, I can only assume there’s more to this sentence than just its literal meaning.
The expression “to be blue” (“að vera blár”) means “to be blue-eyed”, but this seems even more off than the sentence’s literal translation (what does a blue-eyed mountain look like?).
Another Icelandic idiomatic expression is “blue ahead” (“blátt áfram”), which can be used to say “simply, simple as that, simply put, frankly” or, in the form “to be blue ahead” (“að vera blátt áfram”), “to be straightforward, to be frank, to be in one’s natural form”. This latter expression seems to fit better the context, so I decided to go for it, and picked “show their true colours” as an English equivalent to the Icelandic idiom. However, be warned I’m uncertain about this interpretation, and that these are the only alternatives I could find.
I was quite frankly shitting in my pants at the idea that the "Nordic productions" which had been announced would just be one sole cast touring the Nordic countries singing in the same language. I'm so relieved this was clearly not the case, and I can't wait to hear the rest of the performances

I love Augusta her voice is fitting and she killed it with the speaking parts but her voice is way too cute. This singer is absoulutly perfect her voice is powerful, fits Elsa perfectly, emotional and she brings out Elsa's persionality out perfectly she deserves to play Elsa in the liveaction version
_That_ is what a good translation is. The German translators of that song should take notes. I especially love the lines "I will meet the storm“ and "I’ll stand by my side.“
Icelandic lyricists at Disney should take notes too....
@@FlamSparks Is it from the musical?
@@Midnight.Creepypastas yep
This is the Icelandic movie version: ruclips.net/video/vVhEx-PlvuE/видео.html
@@FlamSparks I couldn’t find the German one with accurate English subtitles, so I’ll just translate it myself. Keep in mind they ignored most rhymes.
The snow glows white on the mountains tonight
No footprints to be seen
An isolated kingdom
And I am the queen
The wind, it is howling just like the storm deep inside of me
Controlling myself, I tried that
Don’t let them in, don’t let them see
What you are like, no, that can never happen
You can’t feel anything, don’t show them
Your true self
I’m letting go, letting go now
The power, it is limitless
I’m letting go, letting go now
And I slam the doors
It is time, now I’m ready
And a storm arises
The cold, it is now a part of me
It really is weird how small everything seems now
And those fears that were inside of me
Can’t reach me anymore
What can I do (with my powers)*
The power within me pushes me forward
What lies behind me is over, finally free
I’m letting go, letting go now
Now I’m finally ready
I’m letting go, letting go now
Yet you don’t see tears
Here I am and and stay here
And a storm arises
I feel this power, it is a part of me
It flows into my soul and all this beauty here
Only one thought and the world turns into ice
I’ll never go back
This is the past
I’m free, finally free
And I feel like I’m reborn
I’m free, finally free
What was then is over now
Here I am, in the bright light
And a storm arises
The cold, it is now a part of me
*She doesn’t actually sing the part in the brackets, but it is implied she’s talking about her powers.
Love the silver dress she's wearing
The lyrics are better than the ones in the movie
I agree
That was SO Iconic ❄👏🏽
When this musical makes its way to Finland, I will explode out of excitement. Idc if the tickets cost half of my rent, I am getting the best seats in the house
I was considering doing exactly the same when it comes to Sweden. Like... absolutely
@@FlamSparks Is it coming to Sweden?😊
@@carl-emil it should, they haven't announced when tho
this is lovely, is there any particular reason for them to completely readapt the lyrics for this however? i really like what they did with these and i think the translation is vastly superior to the original but you'd think people would be confused by it, right? lol
I heard (have no direct source for the claim tho) that the lyrics had to be re-written from scratch because they did not have the authorisation to use the official adaptation. I guess the same thing happened with the Norwegian lyrics, which were written in a different variety of Norwegian than the original, but they still _could_ have kept the adaptation much much closer, if they so wished. I'm guessing they were not allowed to.
The production should be brought to the other Nordic countries in the near future, so probably the same thing will happen there too, since the production is the same for all these countries (unlike the one in Germany and the Netherlands, for instance)
@@FlamSparks Wait so you mean the Disney production (Hamburg, London etc) can't be done in the Nordics? Why are we always getting the downscaled productions, same thing happened with Moulin Rouge...
@@carl-emil no, that's not what I mean. It depends on which theatrical companies operate where. The same one operates in Germany and the Netherlands, but clearly not in the Nordics, which only have smaller, local realities that can choose to take on this or that Broadway Disney piece when and how they want and can
The Icelandic lyrics from both films are pretty much widely hated by the Icelandic audience. It's stiff, weird or just plain wrong. The translator who did the new translation is considered the best translator in Iceland so finally we have good lyrics to these songs.
@@karlpalsson7772 hope Disney will hire them instead
You are tempting me so hard right now to learn Icelandic again, but I'm not ready at all to go through *that* again 😭 thanks for this video, still, she's amazing, and the lyrics are too 🥲 icelandic Mandy Moore tho ?)
By all means, do it 😈
@@FlamSparks I SAID DO NOT TEMPT ME 👹 I will continue, anyways, to watch your videos, even more repetitively in Icelandic, to deeply suffer in trilingualism and, as much, remember the 4 most repeated words, so I end up stressing about it and download Drops 😀🥳 so I can study 10 words a day for 5 minutes and become even more stressed since it's the only free language tool that I have found that has Icelandic in it 😋 and end up using gOoGlE tRaNslAtoR, so that I accidentally call somebody a stinky skýr, while actually attempting to learn how to ask for some yogurt at the supermarket 😊
If you're looking for a free course of basic Icelandic, I can suggest you this one: icelandiconline.com/
I never tried it personally, but it's made by the University of Reykjavík and it was suggested to me by a person I repute being very reliable on this sort of matters
Why are you doing this to me right now 😭 thank you SO SO much 😭❤️ I currently don't have the time to do any kind of course, but I KNOW I will do it, I have to, even more after this that you have done 🥲 I know those days back in 2019 are NOT gonna be in vain ❗ ALSO if you have the plan of translating any song in Catalan or Spanish PLEASE do not think it twice, if you need ANYTHING, you can count on me!!!
Always there when it comes to approving of someone learning a new language ú.ú
Now that you mention it, there is a Catalan song I'd need some help with.
The lyrics of Knowing What I Know Now _had_ in fact been transcribed when the song was made available in LQ. But now that the HQ audio is available, I'd like to have those lyrics check and corrected, if needed. Could you help me with this, please?
The lyrics are available here: lyricstranslate.com/en/wish-ost-un-cop-ho-has-vist-tho-lyrics
I was smeckledorfed. :)
I have seen several musicals in different languages, like this one or the Norwegian one that for some unknown reason they change the original lyrics of their language, why?
Very likely due to the fact that while they had the rights to reproduce the musical, they lacked those for the official adaptations and were forced to rewrite them entirely
