- Paquito D'Rivera (clarinet) plays together with the WDR BIG BAND "Libertango" (K: Astor Piazzolla; A: Pedro Giraudo). This track features Andy Haderer on trumpet, Marcelo Nisinman on bandeon, Paquito D'Rivera on saxophone, and Hilario Durán on piano. The WDR Big Band will be conducted by Hilarion Duran. Other musical guests include Pernell Saturnino, percussion and Horacio 'El Negro' Hernandez on drums. Recorded live at WDR Studio 4 / Cologne (February 2015).
Already as a child Paquito D'Rivera (clarinet) played in the great concert halls of his native Cuba. The musician has remained faithful to the stage and his audience to this day, only that the stages have long since become larger and, moreover, international. The clarinettist, saxophonist and composer has enjoyed a long and intimate friendship with the WDR Big Band. Several top-class CD productions "Benny Goodman Revisited" and "Big Band Time" bear witness to this fruitful collaboration. It was therefore D'Rivera's wish to celebrate his sixtieth stage anniversary with the WDR Big Band. The focus is on many of his own compositions, arranged especially for the WDR BIG BAND by D'Rivera's compatriot Hilario Duran (direction, arrangement and piano).

In a big band orchestration like the one presented here, the originally beautfiul piece loses much of its intimacy and mysterious undertones. It is sparkling now with artistry, shiny and talently polished, flaring out, but at the expense of emotional depth.
You could be right, the solos are more artistery than emotion except for Paquito. Tine Helset plays a fine version. It has to be the one with the small band - guitar, bas, drums... Far the best.

that's not an accordion, but a bandoneon!
👍 that is true....it is a so called "bandoneon", it is a harmonica instrument that was developed by Heinrich Band. In contrast to the accordion, the case of the bandoneon usually has a square cross-section and does not have mechanically preset chords like the accordion , but only single notes, like the piano.

Marcelo Nisinman is great, the rest is pretty meh. Piazzolla's intensity is what almost everybody gets wrong: listen to Ahn Trio for a winning bid

85smax Sorry, but this band is one of the best in the whole world. i guess they play everything fine.
They are skilled, no doubt about it, however there's a lack of soul in this. PS: Drummer's solo is way improvable. Listen to afro cuban jazz big bands man, you'll understand what i'm talking about.
it's not about the amount a solo can be "improvable", it's about feeling the music and sharing it with the world.
PS: They're succeeding.
The drummer is btw dutch, the guitarist japanese and the bass is american. not really german
Germans can do a great composition. Latin included. No use to criticize them. Great performance.
