- In this video I will be setting up the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL1 backpacking tent and giving you my initial thoughts on this tent. The tent is free standing and comes in at an impressive 2.5lbs. It is in my opinion one of the easiest to setup, full featured, lightweight, tents on the market.
This tent is not mine, nor do I intend on using it in the future so there will probably be no follow up video. Just wanted to make a video about it since I had it available to me. Based on my previous experience with the older Copper Spur Classic UL2 this is one of the tents I recommend to people trying to get into backpacking.

I suggest you place the lateral pole on top of the main pole instead under it (less tension on the plastic attachement).
Sometimes a company just gets things right. This is one of those times. The Copper Spur in both the 1 and 2 person(s) tent is simply the best awesome goodness.
Nice to see someone taking a good look at the details, showing them to those of us who have never had out hands on one of these.

Nice review. I love my Big Agnes copper spur hv ul2. If I was a much thinner guy I would consider this one person tent.
Whatever works for ya Paul! Awaiting the AT start videos with Grumpy. HV2 is solid too. I really enjoy the entire copper spur line.
The ULV 1 tent is excellent. It fits in a Revelate bikepacking seat bag with alot of room to spare. The downside is the lack of a vestibule. If it’s raining you are pretty much trapped. However the newer versions appear to have more zips on the rainfly. Hey, its a tiny tent that feels roomy when sitting up. A quick shelter using the foot print and the rainfly is pretty cool.
Great vid. I love my HVUL1. Hope to start using it more. The DCF stuff is intoxicating but certainly not perfect for So Cal backpacking. My last overnight trip I sure could have used a free standing shelter. But alas it was sitting at home.
I feel ya. In most places in the White Mountains I feel like a free standing tent of hammock would be like 100000% easier to find a good spot with. Luckily I have been doing pretty well with the Solplex still. It can fit into some pretty tight spaces. But for say wood tent platforms at many of the backcountry spots in NH the freestanding aspect comes in incredibly handy

I really like one man tents! I use a 4 season one man military style tent and it works great but my head touches the roof when i sit up and it weighs 5 pounds ughh.. I even purchased a bed net style tent to save weight the catoma raider 2.5 pounds. Its nice but cramped! So i went to the mountain man store and saw this very tent but in the mtn glow version and wow i couldnt believe how light it was!! Very quality materials and well thought out! After watching many reviews and the store visit i definitely want this tent but the normal "non mtn glow" version lol! Just have to bite the bullet and drop the money on it! I will definitely put this tent through its paces and im sure it will be a great tent! Awesome overall design in my opinion! Thanks for the review man! I hope your girl enjoys this tent! Hike on!!

I've heard all good feedback on the Big Agnes tents. I actually switched to hammock camping back in the spring but i'm curious about winter backpacking so I may go back to a tent for the winter months. I'm planning to do a short review of my new Hennessy Hyper-lite hammock soon. thanks again for sharing this info.

I had a Big Agnes Seedhouse SL2 back in the day before I sold it to help fund my Hilleberg. I really liked it and it survived 2 severe thunderstorms without any rain getting inside. I'm now looking for a lightweight tent for 3 season backpacking instead of carrying the 9 1/2 pound Tarra on solo trips. I just started looking and it's good to know Big Agnes is still making quality tents that people are very happy about.
A girl I hiked with on the AT used the Seedhouse for her whole thru hike. Loved it! The Copper Spur is one of the tents I recommend the most when new backpackers ask. They are great tents!
@@ChrisGoesOutdoors I'll admit I am spoiled by the Hilleberg. Inner and outer setting up at the same time is very nice. Plus the highly durable tear resistant materials are very nice and make it strong enough to handle pretty much any storm comfortably. On one trip I slept through a big storm while everyone I was camping with were kept awake most of the night. But honestly it's total overkill for the majority of three season conditions since it was designed as a base camp tent for extreme locations around the world. I bought it mostly for winter camping in Minnesota.
I'm not on the thru hiking level yet but I'm going to be going on 2 week long backpacking trips next year. First trip will be in the BWCAW and the second will be in Isle Royale National Park. Along with multiple shorter trips in State and National forests. There are so many tents to look at these days but I do know I want a 2 person tent. I find the extra space is nice when waiting out storms though I have never been in a solo tent.
The big Agnes copper spur ul2 is also phenomenal. If you are trying to ball out and have money to spend the zpacks duplex is probably one of the best two person tents on the market. But as you said soooo many options at so many price ranges. Those are the two I recommend the most to people. I had the big Agnes fly creek ul2. Hated the front entry and the fact that it’s not really free standing.

And I just realized that my BWCAW trip will technically be a thru hike. The Sioux Hustler trail. I could do it in a couple of days but I'm extending it to a week so I can do some exploring in legit wilderness.

I have this tent. I’ve only used it in the backyard so far but I’m planning on using it soon on the trail. I got it on sale for $288 which I thought was a good price. I got the groundsheet on sale as well somewhere else and I think I paid like $11 or something for it.
I think that is a fair price for the tent for sure! I think you'll find its a great tent. I would recommend to everyone whatever tent they may have to get used to setting it up as quickly as possible. Will help when you find yourself in some monster rain and such! Hope you enjoy it!
Looks great, im thinking of getting one soon. Have you had any issues with rain considering the floor waterproof rating is pretty low? Also the rain fly seems to leave quite a bit of the inner tent exposed at the head end- have you had issues if the rain gets blown diagonally onto that?
Did you notice a lot nosie from the sleeping pads rubbing on the floor? I thought it was my big agnes pad but therm a rest does it too.

OK. I thought it looked pretty self-explanatory but I had to look up a video real quick because while putting my longer poles into the grommet holes at the wider head end… it started to feel like it was going to snap, it was making sounds as well :-) I did not want to break my brand new tent! It really seems like it’s not supposed to bend that much but I guess it is!

Great review. I'm trying to figure out whether to go with this or the Fly Creek UL2. I'm 6'2" and want to make sure I can sit up comfortably.
I owned the fly creek classic UL2. Not a fan. I feel like it was marketed pretty heavy at the time I bought it as a free standing tent when in actuality it is more semi free standing. You have to stake out two points at the end in order to attach the rain fly properly / have optimum space inside the inner. Was not a big fan and got rid of it. I would take the Copper Spur over the fly creek probably 99.9999 times out of 100 haha

I wouldnt go tigerwall either. Has the same issue that the fly creek does and is semi freestanding and it needs to be staked out at the end for optimum setup. If I could choose from any of the big agnes line I would choose the Copper Spur

this is literally the tent I recommend to everyone just getting into backpacking. Its a little pricey if you pay full price but its so easy to set up and has plenty of room for one. Not to mention resale value is solid too if they find they dont enjoy backpacking. This is a great value IMO
Yeah look great easy but I've never backpacked overnight before I do wanna try it I just wanted a one person tent like this even if I go to say a campground something quick and easy to set up I did see the price but I'm sure you'll get your money's worth though looks great and plenty of room. For sure! I dont intend on using this tent at all personally. My GF picked it up for her usage. She loves it so far. It just got her through the Vermont Long Trail without issue. I would definitely wait to pick it up on sale. I probably shouldve mentioned that in the video. These tents are regularly on sale for 20-25% off list price.

I recommend this tent to most people. Its just a really great overall tent for the money. If you can afford it I think the Zpacks Duplex would probably be up there on the list. I dont think I have ever met anyone with one that didnt love it.
I like to keep my gear in the tent with me. It didn't look like there was much room for that with this tent. Do you think the vestibule would have enough space?
If we are talking like full pack, possibly, depending on height. My gf is shorter. Probably 5ft 6" and can git the pad right above her head. If you are taller probably not. If you just like to keep some extra gear and stuff in there then for sure you would probably not have any issues

I was actually going to do it this year but was unsure of what I had for vacation time. In all honesty I probably could have done it but didn't want to rush it. She actually just finished two days ago! (I recorded this video back in June but never edited it) so she made it the whole way and had a great time. No vlogging for her though

Ya it wouldve been cool and in all honesty probably couldve worked out time wise but I didnt want to have to pressure her into finishing in a certain time frame (I would have had 21 days total) and I think its good that she got to do it on her own. Its certainly a great accomplishment!
great tent but i fell on love with my tiger wall.
Cool.... only problem I have with that is that it's not free stand....so if I find a good spot with awesome views in the wild & want to set up and can't stake down due to Rock or unpenetrable terrain .... then what ?

Try it in the rain for a few days. The fly on my tent soaked through. The zipper on the vestibule gets stuck and when the fly is wet, it’s difficult to open or close the zipper. Backyard testing in dry weather doesn’t really show it’s true colors.
I feel you, trail experience is definitely the best way to find the downsides. I feel like any tent in sustained rain essentially sucks. Even my Solplex on the AT would keep the rain out but then condensation could become a little bit of an issue if you didnt let it vent. I would feel random drips or spray after long periods or hard driving rain. Usually after the second of third day when it just didnt have a chance to dry out at all. It is never a good time in sustained rain.
My recommending of this tent to friends getting into backpacking comes from the overall experience I had with the old copper spur. As well as the few people I know who really enjoyed theirs on the AT. Hiked for about 2 months with a couple who used the 3 person version and loved it. My GF just got back from the Long Trail (this is actually her tent in the video, I will more than likely never actually use it on trail) and thought the tent worked really well. They got pretty rocked by rain for like the last week and a half.
Will definitely have to see if she has any prolonged issues with the zippers though. They are quiet small. I could see how they may get snagged especially in saggy fabric. Thanks for watching Donna!
Yes, no tent is 100%. I was disappointed in it's function. The foot area got wet from the first day of rain and my bag got wet as well. I think with all of these UL tents there is some sort of compromise. The ground sheet never stayed attached to the tent, either, so if you pick up the tent to move it, the ground sheet would fall off.
Good video. Thank you. I much prefer videos like yours to ones from the company (When I see khaki shorts and bright white teeth I feel I'm being lied to. Hammock PR photos are the worst.) I like this tent. The biggest problem I think a lot of us will have is our old Big Agnes CopperSpur tents are still in great shape.
I'd always go for the 2 person. The weight is never much different, and there're doors on both sides for the view and cross ventilation. (It's been almost a year, I'll bet your girlfriend has reported that all the strange noises 'that's got to be a bear!" come from the blank side.)
All the clips and hardware I see on this tent are standard Big Agnes kit: I've never had any problem with it so that's good to see. Tent zippers, most zippers (except my Levis) I'd always add at least 8 inches of cord, it just makes any zipper a lot easier to pull.
For stakes, I've just de-volved into 1. All my mini-stakes have loops of orange cord on them. Since doing this I haven't lost any. 2. My all my tent lines have bowline loops on the end, some still have the adjusters. Mostly I just insert a stake in a loop turn it around a couple of times to get a few warps of string gripping the stake. Then I push them in the ground with my foot. If they need adjusting, I might use an adjuster if it's there, but mostly I just move the stake. (The string helps pulling them out). I can't remember the last time I needed to hammer in a stake or fiddle with a knot. I stopped using a ground sheet when I had to carry everything on my back. I've got probably 200 nights since then, no holes, no gooey stuff.
The color coding is good, but it's more of an About Time Already. Whenever I buy a tent I set it up and spray paint code the corners. Tip: Don't bother writing left and right, and don't code anything until it's all set-up ( you may not make mistakes, but I did) Instead set it up, and mark the corners when it's all set up, or as you take each corner apart. You don't need to do a neat job, just a mist is good enough. Krylon spray paint for plastic is good. Keep in mind you'll probably be doing set-ups when it's dark, you're tired, the batteries in your headlamp are weak... so green and blue that are close in shade? probably not a good idea. White, black, Red and Yellow. (Orange? is that the yellow or the red?) Make sure to paint the tent poles. With this tent you don't need to and the two color system just might work. (if the poles are symmetrical then make one end the B&W end and the other the Red/Yellow end, then when you start with red corner tent, fly and the pole is yellow, you know you're good to go.) At home I code my fitted bed sheets with color thread or a sharpie and I do it on two kitty-corners. Anytime you have to turn anything around and think about it, code it.

Wish you would have mentioned if there was a vestibule, which they claim there is.
You can see the vestibule, it's the space when the rain fly is pegged out, outside the mesh. Mine fits a 60L backpack in there quite easily.
I had one of these for a few days before returning it to REI. I was actually quite impressed but it but, taking into consideration that this tent is already expensive and that it needs foot print (also expensive if you buy the want the BA one so you fast fly setup) that it is heavier than a few other one person tents, I just went ahead and bought the completely waterproof Solplex. Even with the heavy DCF material, it weighs 17 ounces.
I never had issues with or used a foot print with the 2 person Copper Spur I had. The floor is thin but I think people worry a bit too much about poking holes through tent floors. I regularly use and love the Solplex. Used it on the AT and still use it now and the thing has held up great so far. The floor on it still looks new hah!
If I were picking up one of the Copper Spur UL1s I always tell people to wait until they are on sale. You can definitely snag one easily for 20-25% off regular price. At that price its a steal IMO
ChrisGoesOutdoors my son has the CS HVUL2 and has had moisture come up through the floor on a few occasions.twice when it wasn't raining. The moisture in the ground soaked up through the floor onto his gear.
Interesting, I wonder if there is something wrong with the actual fabric they used on the floor? I would call Big Agnes and ask them whats up. I dont believe that should be happening at all. There warranty and customer service is pretty top notch. I am going to be making a video eventually about a sleeping pad issue. I was kind of surprised they actually called me to ask me more info about the issues I was experiencing.
Nice review but it seems a bit heavy at that price point. The Tiger Wall UL2 is only 20 dollars more, comes in at the same weight and has 2 doors.
Not totally free-standing though: have to stake down the toe-box on both sides. Sometimes that can be an issue.
went thru 2 tarptents before I bought the one U have... luv it, but, still, a little heavy, might go w/ Zpacks to finish the AT...zippers r a little pain in the butt, but, you'll learn the little secret on those...lol
No Tigerwall? That's supposed to be the BA tent to get.
I would take this over both the Tiger Wall and the Fly Creek. Both of those tents are touted as free standing when in actuality they are semi free standing (At least the fly creek UL1 and 2 and I think all the tiger wall tents). Both of the fly creek and Tiger wall require staking out the foot end corners in order to setup properly. Its an additional step and its not always ideal to do so. If I buy a tent marketed as free standing it should be free standing. I actually wanted to make a follow up review of the fly creek when I bought it complaining about this but I returned after the first use. I hated having to stake out the ends. The Copper Spur appeals to me much more being a legit free standing tent (besides the vestibule)
I'd take this one as well the rain fly on the TW is pretty much transparent no privacy in that thing

When you shoot these videos, please use your camera's zoom. It doesn't help to see how you're connecting the rods to the gromets if your hands are 10' away from the camera. Off to search for another video...
This tent comes with 7 stakes...that is not enough to pitch properly. If you follow BA instructions and peg the inner down at each corner, then the 3 mid points, then the door- it needs a minimum of 8, preferably 10 for the 2 long guys. I notice you didn’t peg the inner 4 corners down? BA also suggest attaching the 2 long guys to the mid point- so 3 attachments on 1 stake!! Appalling idea in wind! I contacted them to ask them to send me a diagram of how to pitch this tent with 7 stakes- it’s gone very quiet .....🤔. Their tone was condescending with a mix of irritation....sorry BA- have I pointed out an inconvenient fact? I have no doubt it is to advertise a lower packweight. It is the only tent maker I have come across in many many years that do not included sufficient stakes/pegs to pitch properly. Other than that I agree with you- it’s a great tent- although only used in the garden as no staying away from home yet where I am. Has anyone else noticed this? I’m assuming people don’t peg the inner down?
Any tent that sets up inner first is not good to set up in the rain.
Ya one of the downsides for sure. If you end up picking up the footprint to this one you can actually set the foot print and fly up first and then setup the inner. Either way its definitely not ideal in the rain. Just got to get REAL quick with setup I suppose!
