In the United States, Andre worked first for the AWA before he worked for the WWWF. Edwardo Carpentier who was connected with the AWA brought him into the territory. I saw Andre wrestle Larry Hennig and Lars Anderson in 1971.
Not sure which came first, AWA or Grand Prix, though the two were linked, Verne Gagne was one of the investors in Grand Prix, heck for a while their tag team belts were the old AWA tag team belts (since Maurice and Paul Vachon were former AWA tag team champions as well as co-founders of Grand Prix Wrestling)
My favorite Kayfabe story from the mid 80s. A buddy and I went to the Cincinnati Colosseum to see the WWF and were waiting by the back doors where all the wrestlers enter, trying to get some autographs. It's where I saw Andre in person for the first time. He had to get out of the taxi ass first and when he did the back of the cab sighed in relief and raised up from the ground where it was almost dragging. Anyway, I see this airport van stop about two blocks away and a guy gets out and starts walking. The van pulls up and all the 'good guys' pile out and head in. A few minutes later the guy they had let out gets closer and it was The Iron Sheik. It was taken very seriously back then.
We had a custom van that was blue and gray,it smelled of Giant Funk. I had the interior steam cleaned 4x in a row and the Giant Funk was still there.I was Vince's driver from 88-90. I was summoned by Gorilla that someone wanted to meet me and he walked me over to Andre and we became friends and I drove him in the van a few times. I have a lot of stories of those years and even have pics of me wearing the Winged Eagle and the Million Dollar Man's belt in my apartment. All of the McMahon family couldn't not have been nicer to me and my family.Hell of a 2 year Rollercoaster ride.
"I didn't mind going to the job, it's the *working* part I didn't like" Honestly, same, it's why I consider mysf semi-retired already in my late 30s (plus sustaining a minor neck injury also forced me into reducing my activity levels). We used to do the fight thing in the Army. The platoon sergeant would take you out to the field and have the two men drop their gear, and give them the opportunity to fight. Sometimes we fought, other times we didn’t. But the issue was often finished.
From what I understand TW’s primary job at first was simply to be Andre’s real life valet and his refereeing was simply to keep him on staff during the in between times, maybe his refereeing during Andre’s match as a continuation of that first task
“I didn’t mind going to the job. It’s the working part I didn’t like.” Kinda reminds me of a line Uncle said in Red Dead Redemption 2: “I’m not lazy. I just don’t like working. There’s a difference.”

As I said I don't always watch the episodes in the order they got released. So Dutch gives Mat Riddle a lot of credits in 2023, somehow I would say that did sound different in in 2024, unless I have not mixed this Show up with another one. Also talks different about AEW. Gave them Credits in 2023 but niw he says it's boring because they don't tell stories and Tony is a fan not a boss. While those words are not wrong, I have to say AEW was not different in 2023 than in 2024, except that they hired even more wrestlers and lost some, like Jade Cargill and CM Punk. The only character that really tells Stories is Toni Storm with her 1950is Gimmick. But AFAIK Dutch gave her Credits for that.
Matt Riddle is a great guy and a very good amateur wrestler. I have known him since his days wrestling at Stroudsburg College. He was a very good Collegiate wrestler. And of course he went on to MMA where he had a good run and it would have been outstanding had it not been for douchebags like Dana White standing in his way. The sky is the limit for Matt riddle at WWE. I'm happy to see him making more money with WWE than he ever would have made with the crooked promoters of MMA. ... and I do recognize how incredibly hard it is to believe that people like Dana White are far more corrupt than people like Vince McMahon.
Hard to say Dana “stood in his way”. Riddle is a bad ass, and performed well in UFC, but the dude failed for weed twice in a year. I think weed being banned in anything is silly, but failing two tests in a year isn’t management blocking you it’s self inflicted wounds. But I think his path to WWE was probably long term better. I don’t think he was on his way to being the champ in ufc so he probably wouldn’t have made big money there.
