Guys, I know many of you are trying to buy the Digi Retroboy, there was 11 left in my link, but it seems they have all sold out and I can't find ANYWHERE that's stocking them. I'll keep my eyes out, but eBay, Amazon and AliExpress are all sold out, or not even listed. The link will change if i find any!

For anyone viewing in 2020/2021 or even later, these retro handheld emulators have come a long way since this video was uploaded. The market has become very competitive, and you can get a handheld better than all the ones in this video for between $60-$100. Some notable ones are the RG351P made by Anbernic and the Retroid Pocket 2. Retro Dodo has dedicated videos on both of them if you want more information.

My favorite official game boy was the micro. Having a backlit screen back in the day was a game changer. The only downside is the lack of compatibility with GB and GBC games.

Definitely biased toward an official Nintendo Gameboy. My favourite is the SP because it can play alllll Gameboy games with a nice backlit screen, but I’ve also been really enjoying the original GBA with a backlight mod because of the form factor.
Still, I kind of want to pick up a BittBoy because of how they made it look like the DMG and it has SD card support. Just a shame it can’t properly play some Color games like Shantae very well!

I love the Bittboy! I always have it with me. It's so durable, slim, the battery lasts so long, easy to use. Screen is crisp & clear, the emulators run great. It was so worth $40. I have quite a few emulator handhelds and Bittboy is my favorite. I suppose for some people it might be a little ergonomically uncomfortable because it is so small, but it really doesn't bother me.

The DIGI Retro Boy is nearly impossible to get in the US. I tried and failed. And there's only so shady of a retailer I'll go. An AGS 101 backlit GBA might be the best way to play GB games. But, Sonic man. Sonic! Also, finally played Super Mario Bros 2, it is amazing. I think the best way to play any of these games is on a GBA. But need a good rom player cart that takes an SD card. It's not 2002, its not "cool" to carry all these accessories like it was back in the day. I wish they'd make a GBA style knock off that could play SNES. I got the retro game boy you reviewed a little while back. My girl and I and her kids were loving it.

My opinion? If you only want to play GB/GBC/GBA games, grab a GBA SP AGS-101 and two flash carts. A flash cart for GB/GBC games, and a flash cart for GBA games (the GB/GBC emulation of the gba flash carts ain't great).
However, if you want more than just Game Boy, grab a Retroid Pocket 2+. It's only $100-150 depending where you buy it and what shipping option you choose. And it can run everything from Atari 2600 up to Dreamcast, DS, and PSP just fine. And since it's running Android, you can use Retroarch, which has a TON of features and options to change around to make things look and play exactly how you want them to. I'm using the Game Boy Lite palette for GB games, as well as color correction for GBC/GBA games to match the original console's palettes better. Even have a shader that lets me adjust the brightness, contrast, and saturation manually to get things exactly how I want.
You could also go with a Miyoo Mini that's a bit cheaper than the Retroid and doesn't run quite as much, but is still really good for 8/16 bit consoles. It's also super popular so there's plenty of fan-made accessories around that you can buy, like grips, stands, docks, and carrying cases.
Though obviously, if money's an issue, then there's no problem going with a cheaper device. The bittboy is still a good option too.
    __
I actually considered getting a GB Boy Colour, but that screen shape annoys me. It makes some games like Mario Land look super janky. If I got one, I'd have to look into modding it with a properly shaped screen.
    ___
The DigiRetroBoy looks great for GBA games. I imagine it's just a hardware clone, and the cartridge it comes with is a GBA Flash Cart. If that's the case, if you're playing anything other than GBA games through that Flash Cart, it's emulating them. And the emulation of GB/GBC/NES/GG/MS ain't amazing. GB tends to have some jittering and screen tearing, GBC tends to crash a lot, GG seems fine, NES is okay but due to the screen size it looks janky, Master System is about the same as NES. They also all have issues with saving. Sometimes saves will work fine, sometimes they won't even be there next time you load up. And since it's a Flash Cart, you also need to wait a good 5-10 seconds before turning the console off or resetting it after saving. Flash Carts take a few extra seconds to save the actual save file to the SD Card, and if you turn it off too early, it can corrupt the whole card. Though I'd say it's great if you're just playing real cartridges or GBA games through the flash cart. I'd be curious if it can run real GB/GBC cartridges too, because if so, you could just buy a GB/GBC flash cart like the Everdrive GB.

One of the best Gameboy Advance systems you can get is actually the Nintendo DS Lite, it runs GBA games natively, can use the R4 card to play GB/C games as well as Master System, NES, Atari and couple of other great systems.

My grandma took me to a rummage sale probably 9 years ago and I got my first Gameboy with TMNT for 1 dollar. It's screen broke off a few days later but still worked and I loved it. I got a newer one later. I also have a green Gameboy Color. I use a SP now. Use my 2ds xl for ROMs like Snakewood. Also I have two questions: are pounds the same as quid and are original Gameboys really that expensive? I know my sp was like 30 or 40 but I thought the older ones were cheap.

Hi, I'd like to point out that the SP is a great choice, but be sure to pick up the later version that has improved back light. To tell the difference just look at the back of the SP: if it says AGS-101 then it's the new one (buy it!), if instead it says AGS-001 then it's the old one (do not buy it!).

I really need to one day buy an Original Game Boy in good condition.... I got one that's kinda rough but works, I got it for $4 over a decade ago at a thrift store.
My first Game Boy was the Game Boy Color, But I didn't get it till I was 9..... I was deprived..... back when i was innocent & didn't learn the effect of bugging for what I wanted. (That didn't last much longer)
Also got a Game Boy Pocket, that one is mint! Also had it for over a decade, I think I also got it from a thrift store.
Of course my Color is mint, since I had it since I was 9, (came with Pokemon Crystal) For light.... I sat on the edge of the couch under a lamp. (Many hours)
My Original Game Boy Advance I didn't own new, I skipped over it to the SP when it released. But I also scored it from a thrift store over a decade ago, it's in meh condition.
The SP, I owned since new, still mint. & I feel it's the best Game Boy to own today. (backlight & everything)
I wish I had a Micro tho.... When it was new.... I didn't care... I got a DS. The collector in me wants one badly!
I really do want a GB Boy, the fact it plays legit cartridges, really has my interest. (Gotta research to make sure it can't kill any cartridges) But It does impress me!
That MakerBuino sounds interesting! (too much money tho)
The Digi Retro Boy would be cool..... (For half it's price) But I would love one.....
& a Wireless charging GBA.... (Eyes bulge)

GBA SP are numerous and inexpensive......you can get a decent one for around £30-40/$30-40. If you want the backlit version - AGS101 then you're talking more £90/$90, but that is the best one. Otherwise the AGS001 is still good, and even though only front-lit, it looks good, and plays all the GB/ GB Colour/ GBA games.

the LDK game is the better option in chinese handhelds at this point. much beefier than the odroid, goes up to SNES and PSX (with shoulder buttons) pretty well for a lot of games and only around 50 USD
