Cutting Winter Rye/Raking with John Deere B!

  • The Winter Rye Alan planted last year is ready to be cut. We're planning on round baling the rye and seeing how it does as a heifer feed. The 820 John Deere gets put on the New Holland 489 Haybine to cut it. The next day, Jen's Dad raked it with his John Deere B tractor and New Holland Bar Rake. The old Johnny Popper looked pretty good in its working clothes. We end the video with a shot of the Dairy Cows enjoying the pasture and the shade the big Oak tree gives them.

Floating head is what made the 489 unique.
I bought mine used at a farm auction in MN , December of 1983.....only a couple years old....paid $5,200
I used it until I sold my farm to son in 2012.
When I first bought it , I mentioned the floating head and nearly everyone said.............." all have it"
I asked him if he could raise JUST the sickle bar up and down on his different make of mower conditioner.
When he said " no", I told him he did NOT have a .."floating head" on his machine.

That’s what I grew up with were two John Deere A’s and a D. Use to mow hay with an A just like the one here. The other A had just one big front tire on it. 8- 25- 20. They put a farmhand on it. When we were still doing loose hay, dad would mow the meadows and the alfalfa. Grandpa would bunch the hay with what the called a sulky rake. Then dad would come along with the A with the farmhand on it and pick the bunch off hay up and take into the stack yard and it would push the hay off the long wooden tines onto the stack. The we finally went to small bales and could load about twenty small bales on the farmhand and dump those on the stack. When I got old enough to run the farmhand with the A under it it did not have power steering. Always had to move forward to turn. Sometimes it was so hard to turn I felt like standing on one side of the steering wheel. Lololo

@@georgeungemach6834 we had stackyards all over the meadows. My grandpas brother uncle Frank use to bring my grandpa to the meadows in a 1948 wily Jeep. They along with my dad would hitch up a team and pull a wagon to the hay and load it with the loose hay. I was pretty you then but once in a while dad would let me come. While they loaded dad would dig a hole in the stack and put me in it.

Thanks in advance and enjoy these videos!

I love that machine! My grandpa bought it new in 1988, and haven't had much trouble with it.it should have new rollers, because the rubber is starting to wear off. The biggest issue we have had, is the universal joint, inside the pole, where the pole pivots, went out and it took out the knuckle, I think it was about $800.00 for that part, but if it was replaced before it went out, it would just be the u joint. It is greasable, but the book didn't show that, and it is really hard to access to grease it.there is a roller chain, that needs to be kept in good condition, we haven't had any trouble with it, but I've heard it can cause a lot of damage if it breaks.the sickle head has a greasable bearing in it, and I grease that quite often, I think that bearing is about $100.00 if it has to be replaced, but ours has been in there a long time.
