That’s exactly the same shoe story I have. Turned to Hokas many years ago because I needed the cushioning. Moved to Altra for awhile but after a couple of years My Achilles said no more!! INow I am wearing Topos mostly switching out with Hokas. Seems to be working👍 Good luck at Cocodona. I’ll be out the tackling the 125.
Great job at Ancient Lakes 56K with that pack. I ran the Sunday version and good grief that Blue Loop is hard, I never want to see another rock! Happy for Lily! 🇨🇦
That's one of the things that I love about running - it makes you feel good while you're doing it and pretty much all day after. Glad Lily is doing better. Hopefully your sleep is better now as well. I wish I slept like I was ten years old, but sadly those days are behind me and I know that feeling of getting a few hours of sleep and then feeling like a wreck for the day. Interesting answer about the thoughts while running. I had a suspicion that everyone is different. I asked that question because I'd done a 7hr long run last Sunday (3/31) and even though I was listening to music I thought of almost everything possible. The past, the present, the future, challenges, successes, running goals, past running failures - I process a lot while running and never with the intent of doing so, the thoughts just come and go as they please. So I figured I'd see what goes through your head - thanks for sharing.
Hi Wes!! Ancient lakes look so beautiful and the Sky was so cool!! 👍🏻😂 Congratulations! This was your race Number...? 🎉🎉 I Hope this week will be everything ok...and more hours of sleep!! Stay strong! 🇮🇹💪🏻
Hi Matteo! Not sure I understand the question, are you asking how many ultras I've done? According to wesplate.com Ancient Lakes was my 46th ultra or ultra-distance adventure. A few non-races are in that list, and there are some ultra-distance runs that aren't in that list, so 46-ish. I have 59 results on Ultrasignup, wow that's a lot!
Great stuff as usual, Wes! Hope your "fur baby" is doing much better. I certainly am familiar with those low sleep nights having an aging pet w/ asthma. Bless you and your pet. Well... first 50miler coming this weekend (2nd attempt)... hope to have a good experience to share down the road. Your comment about podcasts and perhaps "nothing at all" fascinated me, and may inspire me to try something different on "race" day.
Great update, wishing you the best we are experiencing the same issue with our dog. Changed food to a more sensitive type still has issues. Wish the best for your fur baby…🤙🏽
Thank you! She's feeling so much better and yesterday finally made a more-normal non-diarrhea poo. I'm sorry to hear your dog is having an issue. I hope for improvement!
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who gets a small part of a song stuck in my head on a run 😂 Question - where is the place/time you've felt the most remote and by yourself? I feel like these 200+ mile races get you out there, and have long stretches without seeing anyone. Could be when you've been running or any other time!
Oh Wes, sorry to hear about your puppy! Glad to hear they're on the mend. Great training week and so glad to meet you this weekend! We had the best weather out there. Have a great week.
Totally agree on DNF. I think it's important to not see it you being a failure, or not capable of doing it. Obviously things didn't go as plan, but you take it from there and grow from the experience. DNF happens to everyone. Curious what is the bag/vest you plan to use for Cocodona / what's the capacity? I'm thinking of getting something bigger than my Salomon Adv Skin 12L.
Nice job on the 50k Wes! I was the one who hollered at you and said I watch your youtube! Your previous ancient lake video was part of my race research too! I'm sorry I wasn't able to see you at the end. 😊
Again a great insight in your traing. Ran my first ultra of this year last week, 54k at the Cauburgtrail in Valkenburg (NL). Can be seen on Diemenrunners. Made a rookie mistake in using new shoes which caused blisters on both heels. But what I really want to know is how you keep on eating. I have tried setting a alarm every 45 minutes or 1 hour, but after about 34k I really do not want to eat anymore. Have to 50+k's in the next two months. Any tips?
Saturday's 50k looked fun and beautiful! Thanks for the channel shoutout and answering the various questions. Great insight from you!
Thank you Chad! 🙌🏼

I wish more runners were like us and rocking Topo, they are great shoes! Good luck at Sedona Canyons!!!

Today I had a piece of They Might Be Giants' "Birdhouse in Your Soul" looping in my head. ruclips.net/video/vn_or9gEB6g/видео.html

And being a part of the next episode!

Simon, thanks for being a part of the next episode! 🙌🏼
One of my best (most enjoyable & satisfying) race experiences ended up being a DNF.
I love this story! 🙌🏼

Thank you for hollering! 🙌🏼 I hope you enjoyed the course. Thanks for watching the channel.

Loved the video of the 54K! Thanks for the question, I’ve included it in the next episode. 🙌🏼 I appreciate you!
How do you work around being sick? Do you use her/sleep quality metrics to know when you are supposed to be running again?
I don’t know what your second question means, but I also say that in the next episode. 🙌🏼
