    I remember these cars in the 70s as a 7/8 year old with the neighbour's car exploding into life making my head turn in a flash my mouth open wide as you like.It was and still is the greatest most epic exhaust note in the World ever and such a beautiful designed body to go with it.Long live the triumph stag!!!!.

    Hello from Christchurch, New Zealand. I came across this post by accident & I thoroughly enjoyed the Stags & their enthusiastic owners.
    I belong to the Christchurch Triumph Owners Club. We have a number of Stags in our selection of the fine Triumph Marque within our club.
    I own a 1977, Triumph 2000TC with overdrive & power steering in Inca Yellow. Like your owners we so enjoy the joy & satisfaction of driving our Triumphs during club activities. Thank you for sharing.

    Fantastic! The enthusiasm within these car clubs is overwhelming. For all the issues back in the day with Leyland we should be grateful that these cars were ever built. The engine issues are well documented and easily remedied it seems to me. I could say the same about the K series engine head gaskets which Lotus sorted completely. It's all a bit of a shame but the enthusiasm lives on world wide.

      My only concern is that; if the engine issues were so easy to fix, why didn't they do them back in the day? As or Lotus K Series, having known quite a few owners of the k-seires Elise, they were far from "sorted completely"... more like "not at all"!
      At the end of the day it's still BL, and we're not taking Lexus reliability here!

      @@utubecomment21 The K series was a very light engine and needed looking after. Most owners and garages were clueless regarding the low volume of water in the block and would never check it. There is a school of thought that engines should be robust enough to withstand all the abuse that can be thrown at them, but read slow and heavy into this. The revised head gasket was a revelation - look at the race series of the time, there were very few if any engine failures. The cars remain popular today, as much as any Lexus, but they can't compete with the cost difference. I suppose that's why lotus stuck with the V6 - reliability over mass... the Merc 4 pot will be interesting though.

    Evans coolant , German chains , electronic ignition. The stag engine is fantastic. If velvet were a sound it would be the stags exhaust note.

      Ferrari F355 is my first V8 love. I love the TVR that never came out ruclips.net/video/TIJpphK7SGc/видео.html and the Stag is close third IMO

    I owned 2 Stags in in mid to late 80s. I really really miss them and hopefully will own another, but will have to have a small block Chevy shoe horned in.

    A couple observations:
    1) What a great looking set of wheels. Fifty odd years on it is now evident that Triumph got the lines right.
    2) The English, more than any other people, know how to enjoy the moment & this club is (for me) more evidence of this.

      Believe me, no you don't. They're cr@p! Go get a jaguar, waste your money maintaining it, and at least a jag will offer you a (false) sense of credibility. But British Leyland (and I've lived in Leyland, Lancashire) simply churned out cr@p upon cr@p ... they were an absolute joke of a company!

    I am in the USA and love this car. Would you have any contacts here that I could follow up with if I wanted to put a Stag together? Even better would be someone who I could purchase a rebuilt 3.0 V8 engine from?

      Best I get regularly get out of my manual with overdrive on a long run is 27mpg - if its had its gearbox changed out to a 4 speed jaguar unit then maybe it could be possible.

      I had a stag in the 80’s and on a long drive from Melbourne to the Gold Coast averaged 28mpg driving 100 to 125 kph most of the time. The engine was purring along at 3000 rpm thanks to the 4 speed manual transmission with electric overdrive. I loved that car!

      @@SilverSurfer5150 Well yes that would be more like it. The one that i've inherited from my father has been with us since 1976 and I remember dad always talked about 18mpg (automatic). I haven't bothered checking as a tank of fuel lasts a year, only going out on good days - other than Silverstone this year. One good day was all we needed :(

    Someone should be brave enough to remanufacture a replica with a 400HP EV drivetrain and sound (of course!). It still has the look. I suspect the brave outfit that did it could collect at least 1000 £5k deposits with a £65k target cost - and then that's enough volume to make it happen. Recycling boring EVs will be a thing sooner or later...

    Did Standard make a big mistake not taking the Rover V8? To avoid BL control, such a shame the stag v8 had a multitude of faults..

      Let's be honest, to go from the unreliable Triumph V8 to the Buck V8, would be the equivalent of going from one unreliable frying pan, into another unreliable frying pan.
      What do you think the reason behind all those Rover, TVR, Land Rover breakdowns were, back in the 70's, 80's 90's?

    As much as I love the Rover P6 and Sd1 V8, the Triumph V8 was a better choice than the Buick 215.

      I'm still a SD1 fan, but shame about the V8 which, having worked on them, I know to be total horse dung. Let's not kid ourselves about the 3.5 V8, we're not taking Lexus levels of reliability ... more like - as reliable as a politician's promise!!!

    I had a 1972 Stag. Well the lines and contours of the car were very nice but the mechanical engineering was terrible. The worst was the crappy engine. Prone to over heat, electrolytic corrosion of the aluminum heads on the cast iron block literally ate away heads, head gasket failures due to over temp warping of heads, and other mechanical "issues" caused by poor design and poor quality control. Second worst item was the electrical system. Shorts, corrosion, poor connectors, cheap materials, etc. Ride was good, not great. Interior finish was good but cheap materials did not wear well. Parts were VERY hard to find in USA and special orders from UK were expensive and took a LONG time to get them. USA service technicians knew very little about the car and finding anyone qualified to work on the car was very hard. The poor mechanical design, spotty logistics and lack of technical support doomed this car in the USA.

      Your experience seems to be similar to other Stag owners I have heard speak. It sounds like all the people in the club just use OEM parts that are re-engineered to better than spec.

    I might be 1/2 US Brit but these people are just way to hard to understand!
