- In this episode we fully immerse ourselves into off grid living in a way we've never done before... foraging our own food! We are completely new to it, but armed with a couple of RUclips videos, Instagram reels, and a go-for-it attitude, we go out in search for ripe blackberries and make our own home-made jam! 🍒😋

A lovely jammy episode 🥰🥰
How about nettle soup next!? 😁
I love blackberry-ing at the time of year…but I use the berries on my breakfast granola!
PS lovely to see Rufus running about off the lead - he’s the goodest boy!
Great to see Rufus running free. Well done!
I absolutely loooove foraging! I think it’s the main reason I love late summer and early autumn. I don’t like the seeds in blackberries, but love the flavour, so I make seedless blackberry jam. I also forage apples and elderberries to make bramble jelly. It’s so good. I make a vegan roast using fresh Richmond meat free sausages, wrapped around some vegan stuffing, and I glaze it with my bramble jelly 🤌…but equally I love it on toast/crumpets or with vegan cathedral city cheese 😋. You can just make elderberry jam too, but if you do, don’t eat the elderberries raw. They MUST be cooked. There’s something so satisfying crafting your own preserves. Enjoy your foraging guys, from a fellow vegan, from Barnsley S.Yorks xx
Currently watching the Vlogmas episodes, in August!! The biscuit making one we watched this morning was hilarious. 😂
Dylan and Lynda
Well, you can tear up your Tesco Clubcard! You're living off the land now!😊
I was really surprised when on return after the pub you nearly filled the box. If it had been me I would've eaten every one. However, seeing you spread the jam on toast made it all worth it.
Thanks for another great vlog
This year has been brilliant for blackberries. Well done with your jam. I did my first this summer as well. Cooked it too long and ended up really thick, yours looked better 😀👍
If you weigh your fruit and put the same amount of sugar and the juice of a lemon, the pectin will help it set. But it tastes so much better than shop bought x
A couple of suggestions: Fashion yourself a pole with a hook to pull down the taller branches. Also add a tablespoon of chia seeds to help the jam set up.
Walking Stick when I was a lad.
What a great tip! Thanks! ☺️
Or a mesh bag full of citrus seeds that will help the Jam set up too if you dont have Chía. 😊
I'm with Amy...As a child I once bit into a beetroot only to find a maggot in it...I've never touched a beetroot since. I'm now in my 60s.
When I was a kid, we had a huge blackberry bush that was fed by the river that ran behind our house. It grew the biggest, juiciest berries. My dog loved blackberries and it was so funny watching her oh-so-carefully picking them while avoiding the thorns. I swear she developed prehensile lips! Delightful vlog, as usual. Enjoy your jam!
That looks delicious!
You don’t need that much sugar.. I add more fruit… and some apple juice for the pectin… I generally use 1/3 the amount of sugar and I use coconut sugar because it’s easier for our pancreas 💜
Those red berries were honeysuckle and poisonous. Blackberries are low in setting agent, pectin, so need a hand. This can be lemon juice or apple juice (you often see blackberry and apple). Most hedgerow fruits like elderberries, plums, damsons can be made into jams or jellies. Floating Your Boat do lots of foraging and have the recipes on their vlog. Well done though, it came out yummy which is the whole point :)
Wes picking blackberries two for me one for the container 😊 hopefully blackberries aren't like cherries 🍒
Haha best way to do it! 😋
@@BoatTime have a great weekend to you both 😊✌️♥️
Love the Rufus cam action shots!!!
Thanks!! It only fell off a few times 😅
can't beat home made jam - worth more than the 4 quid jars in supermarkets :-) also look out for wild damsons, walnuts (quite rare to be fair) for pickling, elderflower or elderberries, I think ketchup can be made from rosehips as well not tried that myself. Don't forget nettles as well.
ha ha realised you are still in Warwickshire - Fleur is one of out locals!! Let me know if you want some of my foraging locales - we are just off the marina bridge at the top of Hatton if you are ever back this way autumn ish
Ahhh kids... im blowing on my screen here!
Blow on the surface of the pan to cool the surface and stop it boiling over for a second.
You need to skim the scum off the top and bin that (or chuck it in teh fruit leather) then start sampling a drop of jam on a cold plate to see if it wrinkles. If it doesn't, then you've made a fruit sauce... not jam. Still very nice :D
How nice! The blackberries are so good.. 🤩
We were so impressed with how easy it was! 😋 so tasty
@@BoatTime The smiles said it all! We used to pick and eat them while hiking in New Jersey! The birds would get the berries on the upper branches first, so we would have to reach into the bushes just a bit further to get the good ones! Never had enough make it back to camp to make desert out of them.
Did you sterilise your jam jars before filling? Usually done in the oven after washing thoroughly. Reduces bacteria 🦠
Well done on the blackberry picking… blackberries are so easy to freeze if you pick too many! I don’t wash them after picking but I do make sure I have clean hands before handling 😊
You guys really must brave the Sharpness Canal and Severn estuary to Bristol some time soon. I did it back in 1999 on my friend's narrow boat and it was an unforgettable experience.
Perhaps some day! Maybe when we’ve done the rest of the network just in case 😅
Mint sauce - they’ve used the concentrated version it’s meant to be diluted with more vinegar, but they haven’t done that!
You need to invest in a British foraging handbook.
We do have some playing cards with common forgeables on! 🌿
Lots of great tips in these comments. For picking blackberries garden gloves and long sleeves, a pole or in my day, an old wire coat hanger. I don’t know if you can use cutters on your pathway.Yum
Loved this video❤❤
Thank you!! ☺️ glad you did! ❣️
🤠👍 just a hint, apple has pectin, works verry well for setting jellys or jams, of course pectin from the grocer is always an option and to protect the preserves my familly always floated a layer of food grade parafin wax on top of the preserve
👋🏻😊
Jam looked prettydelicious
Elderberry jelly, elderberry wine.
Recipes online.
Hawthorn vinegar
Crab apple jelly
There are wild pears on the K&A which make excellent pickles and jam.
I forage mushrooms ...maybe you should leave that for now. :-)
Jam looks delish xx
Wine can be made from most things.
Oo nice! Plenty of recipes to try 😋 haha yeah we’re still not convinced on mushrooms!
Hello ☺. What's worse then finding a maggot in your Blackberry (bramble)? Finding half of one! Means you've already eaten the other half 🤣 Look out for a great little foaraging pocket book by Richard Mabey called Food for Free. Also generally with any berries - just remember red means dead and you can't go wrong. To stop the scum on top of your jam add a little knob of butter or margarine. Sending ,love & light 🐶🐾 xx
Keep the jam in the fridge for preservation and it will be less runny
Something different to see - nice one 😊
Thank you! Yeah not done this one before! 😊
@@BoatTime have a fab weekend you two - watching your adventures always brings a smile 🙂👍🏻
Well you know you are going to have to do this more often now 😉. So you need to make notes to add this to the foraging section of the cookbook 🤔. Can I place my order for a jar of boatime jam please 😊🙏. Loving Rufus cam 🤣
Still B A utifull job🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤LOVE you guy's.... I'm so SORRY about Dupp's
Anfield ❤
Lovely blackberry jam. Can't taste it myself. Yummy🎉. Well done both of you. Be very careful what your picking in the hedgerows!!! Best idea is to buy a foraging book, don't want to make yourselves ill. Take care. Looked scrummy on that toast. 🙋🛥️
So glad we gave it a go! 😊 Haha dont worry, we wont do anything too daring, just the safe ones for us beginners 😂🫢
Wess they look like the plant hypericum . It self seeds and you can find it all over. It has yellow flowers then follows on with berries. I think this plant was used for depression but I don’t know which part Bob keep up the good work
Awww well done blabkberryings you both did well tc now luv from the oldies 👍👍🤗🤗
That pub food looks gorgeous! My son used to come in from foraging absolutely covered in purple, which was so cute❤
Thankyou that jam looks good. And those roast potatoes look good..
This was another fun video!… I love Sundays where you don’t have to do anything… Is it weird that I like seedy jam….? 😂
I have a fool proof?? Almost ?? Hedgerow Jam. Loads of berries from the tow path and crab apples to help the ‘set’. It s on an old bit of paper!! You must be down our way soon, happy to pass it on. Gloucester ish .
What about the vlog called “this tiny life”. They forage all the time and are really good at it.
That’s the Jack and Gabby we referred to in this one 😊 they’re great!
8:00 I can hear the alarm! I'm still a youngster! 😆🤣
Wes can still hear it but sometimes I cant, my ears must be old 😣😂
@@BoatTime Reminds me of the scene in Brooklyn 99: *looks at young people in pain "... Oh! Ow. Yes. That sound I can also hear." >.> ..
@@mazack00 haha love brooklyn 99
great vlog on channel cranking it on the cut keep up the cvogs thanks lee
Great vid guys, the jam looked spot on 😋 maybe nettle tea next. 🤦♂️😜✌️💜
I am very impressed with that blackberry jam. When I used to pick them as a kid, the only thing that put me off was finding a maggot in a berry one day. So I used to go out looking for goose goggs after that 😂
I also feel your pain... When it comes to doing the puzzles to log in. I have now learn to use the audio button as that is much easier.
Leave mushrooms alone unless you know what you're doing.
Here in France you can take them to your local pharmacy and get them checked over.
8 weeks it took me Gloucester to bath and that was every day cruising.
haha luckily we both hate mushrooms so we are safe in that sense!
Phew, thats some pretty good going! Every day for 8 weeks 🫢
Put the plate in the fridge. Then put the jam on. Wrinkle it with your finger. If it does. The jam will set. Xx
Jam looked yummy! 😋
Thank you! It was surprisingly good!
Hmm.. you had a windlass in your rucksack which is effectively a hook and would have reached the branches. Amy could have done the 'hooking' and Wes the picking...teamwork?🤷♀️
Yummy! I made some fruit leather with mine this year
It was a bit too seedy for us, so we let the birds enjoy it! 😊🍓
@@BoatTime I sieve the seeds out as I'm not a fan of them either but my chickens love them 😊
Are you aware that Rufus is the most wonderfull dog? 🙂
Love from Denmark
You like cutting them which his great why not try a sting nettle soup,.
😋
The only foraging I feel is worth it is for some very special little mushrooms that appear in late Autumn.
Kudos to you but I'm happy to pay for blackberries even more after watching this!
You made jelly cos you wanted seedless. But well done!
we still call it seedless jam in the uk! 🤭 thank you!
Blackberry season is September lol
We wont argue over 48hours
ITS SEPTEMBER THEN!
I've never seen jam making like this. Couldn't stop laughing. Try heating up a small amount of your "jam" and pour it on vanilla ice-cream it's yummy
Wess you could make Elderflower sparkling wine with elderberry s bob
Soaking berries in salt water will get rid of bugs!
Ah nice! Amy used baking soda which was also recommended online!
Hi guys could you tell me what bread you use please it's always crunchy when toasted thank you
Love your vlogs!!! Awhile back, you promoted Manta sleep masks. Do you still use them?
Yep! Genuinely still love them!
Hi Amy and Wes Go to “floating my boat” rich and Fran. Fran is quite an expert on foraging and a very good cook she would advise you I’m sure. Another boater!!xx
Wes & Amy. I am hoping to benefit from your extensive boat DIY experience. I think it might be your video or might be someone else’s and you might know. I can recall a product or process being used to remove mould staining from wood panels. Can you recall this please. Thank you Trevor
Have you tried a teaspoon of mint sause in your gravy?
I always do this, so good 😋 gets the distribution just right
Xx
yummy I make blackberry jam all the time, I have a blackberry bush in my garden and soon will have a Rasphberry one as well.... Maybe you can try Blackberry Gin, that is awesome... check out floating our boat Fran does a lot of floaging, howevery you spell it. Great Vvlog guys and well done.
Get ❤ a forging book might help you out
Great Vlog as always
The sign of a great 2024 vlog?
Five thousand followers cancel their Saturday plans and rush off to the supermarket for a jar of blackberry jam.
Haha!! Perhaps we should’ve sold our batch 🤔
"It actually tastes like black berries." ROFLMAO
Tell me you watch Danni and Joe without telling me you watch Danni and Jo (even though you did try to throw them under the bus for shame!)
We love those two! Joe makes the jam-making look so easy!
Hi guys! I thought those red berries might've been Red Currants, but scrolling through the comments, other people seem to know that they are Honeysuckle, and poisonous, so that shows you what I know! Pay no attention to me!😆
No don’t eat the red berries that’s honeysuckle.looks like you’ve made some nice blackberry jelly ,just the job on rice pudding 😊
haha glad we left them! They just had that poisonous look about them! 😂
Ya'll need some pectin ❤❤❤❤
Click on the link I sent you hopefully this will help you both enjoy foraging together together
That jam looks delicious - and all made with your own fine hands! Well done. Could you keep the music down a bit please. In my view, not necessary and distracting. Yes - I know others will disagree but that's my take.
A bald guy a woman with coloured hair and a dog that looks like Santa's Little helper,Admit it your the Simpsons
😂😂😂 don’t reveal our secret!
Is it me or is the sound not great on this video? Xx
