Yes the chicken wire was a must! I did rebuild this arch first without the chicken wire and then took it all down and added the chicken wire "sleeves" around the pvc pipe. It was a lot easier to attach all the decor than just a piece of pipe.
Pro tip, don't use blow mold pumpkins, use craft pumpkins instead. they're easy to carve and they're lightweight. Blow molds are heavy and don't really stick that well. And while the only downside to craft pumpkins is the sun fading them, there are work arounds for that. I find using spray paint on them works the most effectively.
