I live in Victoria Australia, and i remember black Saturday like it was yesterday.
I was 12 and it was that one time in my life i was scared to go to sleep, despite the fact i live in the suburbs.
It wasn't just February to March, it was December all the way through to early April, fire popping up in random places.
There was a huge fire that happened very close to where i live, started off with someone lighting a couch on fire and because of the heat and winds, it spread through out almost half of the suburb.
Mid January 2009 i would jump into my pool on one of the hottest days that year, the sky was orange, everything smelt like ash, i'd pop my head out of the water for 15 seconds and my hair would be bone dry again.
At night i could hear all three different sirens almost the whole time, and so if it wasn't the heat keeping you up, it was the noise.
This is coming from someone who lived in the safe areas, someone who didn't have to keep an eye on whether my place of living was safe or not every couple hours.
All these fires you hear about, theres way more that happens and a much larger time frame that it all happens in.
And years after black Saturday, driving through the areas it hit, ive never seen so much destruction, dead land where trees and wildlife once were.
I completely agree with you about that smell of ash. such a horrible smell, especially when you live in the heart of the city and can still smell the death taking place ages away. man fuck that day
I live in Victoria as well. I live in the northeastern part too. The smoke rolled into Mount Beauty and the temp got up to 48 degrees. I went swimming and did not want to get out of the pool. It was horrendous living in those hot conditions.
Danosaur yea.... I live there too.. it was a tragic day... I hope it never happens again
I was 12 during Black Saturday as well. I live in Lilydale and I remember massive amounts of people being evacuated to the football ground behind Lilydale train station.
Worst part is they started planning a second evacuation deeper into Melbourne because they were fearing the unthinkable, that the fires would somehow come up through the valley and into Lilydale.
Marysville, a town that I frequented as a kid and still do to this day was completely destroyed and it is so weird to think about how different the town is today compared to when I was a kid.
Scariest thing is this season it looks like it might all happen again.
Danosaur well, Australia just copied and pasted this comment.
I live in country Victoria Australia and the black saturday bushfires were the most hoffic thing i have ever experienced. We were surrounded by fire and all we could do was watch the paddocks in the gully burn and get closer to the house
I too remember that day. I can remember watching the reports and seeing the death toll go up and up in horror with tears streaming down my face. South Australia has had some close calls, but none as bad as Black Saturday. I hope your house and land survived.
Alyssa Black bloody hell .I’d be pooping me pants
Oh i remember black saturday the turn of wind was scary as hell. and then being faced with the fire burning at 3 terrawatts of power. by far the worst fire i've ever seen.
Alyssa Black I too live there! Very terrifying... my parents lost a few friends :(
2 years on and its even worse
I was living in Victoria during The Black Saturday Fires. I had a friend who's house nearly burnt down. Terrifying
Sakura Heartshaven I lived in Gippsland at the time.
The Black Saturday fires happened just 1 or 2 weeks after i just moved to Victoria from Tasmania.
The town i lived in didn't get hit by the fires, although you could see them just outside of the town border. Luckily the fires were dealt with quickly.
It was really tough getting through the 40+ degrees celsius heat, in Tazzy it rarely got pass 25 degrees celsius during the summer where i lived.
America has: Wildfires
Australia has: Bushfires
i remember the black Saturday bush fires and kids were bringing their belongings to school incase their house burnt down

@Xavier Merks 20 Sending virtual hugs you're way mate :-(
@Xavier Yarra Valley resident here. I lost friends in those fires. Just want to send my condolences. It was a very tough time
My school nearly burnt down
@Xavier Merks 20 feel so sorry for you :(
I remember Black Saturday clearly. The wind was so powerful but yet so hot that my eyes were sore, I remember something just felt eerie. I really cried that night. So many dead, so close to my home. It was unlike anything us Aussies have really experienced.
I was only about an hour from the worst of the fires.
The fire in the Australia would top this list
Kjetil Brendemo aye it’s so bad
There's been enough fires in Australia already that it should be it's own list bro.
Oliver Beattie i know............... bro
Black Monday in Victoria
Yea i live in Western Australia
My house burned down in the 2016 Fort McMurray fire! I left town after that year and now in the Armed forces helping others out in times of crisis
My brother works at Little Caesar's and he's bringing home a pizza in a few hours
Grant Perry Same.
That sounds awesome.
Oh good for you
That's fire bro👌
Grant Perry that's fire
What about the Chilean wild fires, seems like South American news are not relevant, and happened this year
BendixX69 thats actually the first and only comment ive read that is about the video
BendixX69 tbh chile the ontly south american country not worthy because of pinochet
you are not even worth answering...
BendixX69 they said they compiled a lot of information to get the list. They took deaths, money, and earth into consideration. Maybe there was worse to them.
Or my mixtape.
I'm actually from Fort McMurray myself. I was a grade 12 senior on May 3rd when we began to evacuate from the school. Our school was positioned nearby deeply fire-cause devastated communities like Beacon Hill and Abasand. It was a very scary and tragic day.
What did it look like?
Watching this after our Black Summer Bushfires here in Australia, which was far more bigger then our Black Saturday fires. I truely hope we don’t have to go through something like that again.
We will, and sadly it will only get worst in the future.
Ben S I feel like it’s gonna be bad this year, as 2020 just keeps on bringing bad surprises.
Do not believe everything on the internet. - Albert Einstein (1875)
:)
Damnit, I thought Lincoln said that.
Go back to history class guys! obviously Thomas Edison said that! Fuckin idiots smh 😑
Sogeking "use the force, harry"
- Gandalf (Sherlock Potter and the Mockingjay)
-Pablo Emilio Escobar Garcia-
Good list. You should do another list with something like "Top 10 Building Fires." Fires that were devastating, historical, or brought about great change but were confined to a small location. Things like the Coconut Grove Fire, the Triangle Shirt Factory Fire, the Iroquois Theater Fire. I'm sure there are many more!
I will never forget the Fort McMurray and Kalowna wild fires. This video completely missed the great Tokyo fire as caused by an earthquake. If memory serves me, the fire alone killed over 50,000.
What about the Iroquois theater fire in Chicago in 1903? This was the greatest loss of life from a single building fire in U.S. history.
Killing over 600 people.
come on, change the name of the video it shoud be "Top 10 Most Devastating Fires in American History (with few exception)"
Small correction: Top 10 Most Devastating Fires in American History (with few exception) that where not caused by Americans" :) The number 1 and 2 "Tokyo fire
75,000-200,000 civilian deaths; " dresden "75,000-200,000 civilian deaths; "
The Dresden death toll as counted by the German government was 20,000. This was not enough for Goebbels, who added a zero on the end for propaganda purposes. Why are you spreading Nazi propaganda?
I am not spreading propaganda, just saying that 20 000 people dead with the entire city destroyed is much bigger than 200 with mostly acres of forrest
I feel so n
Bas for those people back thaen
the truth about the Great fire of London is that several hundred or even several THOUSAND people died in the blaze, while totally negating the fact that the Black Death was rampant in those days...
the fire burned the city but it killed the plauge
I don't think the fire really killed off the plague, it was still around but research suggests that immunity was just starting in Europe, the disappearance of the black death wasn't mere coincidence in other parts of the continent during the events of the great fire, so a big fire wiping out the most deadly disease of it's time is kind of far fetched in hindsight. Also it is worthy to note the fire was only in London, while other cities like York, Sheffield or Glasgow to name a few were miles off from the fire and still had the disease here and there.
Actualy only 4 people died
Never bake bread ever again
My family was in the Ash Wednesday and Black Saturday fires. Absolutely terrifying
thank for showing love for fort mac
the Peshtigo fire got so hot that the river boiled, and those thinking they could use the water to escape the blaze also lost their lives
Thanks for uploading this a couple days after my physical Geography exam on Hazards
How sad that these fires start from storms and others thing's too great video
There was also the Mt. Blanc road tunnel fire in 1999. It started when a semi truck carrying flour and margarine caught fire. It burned for over 50 hours and reached 1,000 degrees. 38 people were killed by cyanide filled smoke and incinerated. The driver was charged for stopping and not continuing to end of the tunnel were it could've been extinguished.
favorite facts about the chicago fire: even the river caught fire (that's part of how it spread so fast; it was able to cross water); it's why pretty much all buildings were made from brick or stone until cement and steel came along; it's still technically illegal for a household to not have a leather bucket just in case; and finally, it was actually kind of a mixed blessing because the city had been so poorly designed back then (with different levels as a result of the fact that the area is actually kinda swampy and the rapid growth) that the fire essentially allowed the slate to be wiped clean and put the grid system in place
I remember when the Oakland hills caught fire in 1990, that shit was scary. The whole treeline and hillside was ablaze..
I live in Western Australia and I have heard about the Waroona fire that happened in January 2016 and it literally demolished the entire town of Yarloop, I was living in Collie with my aunty and her ex partner at the time and I was out in the backyard that day hanging out my washing and all I could see was this huge cloud of smoke that pretty much covered the sky.
You guys should do a video about just structure fires!
I live in Australia and right now the nsw bushfire are so bad you can see ash all over Australia and more then 2 million hectares and koalas and almost gone
Why don't you rename this video to "Top 10 Most Devastating Fire in the USA"
Nigel Thornberry The Fort Mcmurray wildfire took place in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. And their #6 took place in Australia.
damn, 8 of the 10 was on USA
Nigel Thornberry One was in London
Watch mojo's list only ever mention america
There was also the Black Saturday fire from Australia
Crazy... I was just drawing a picture of a burning barn, then this video pops up on my RUclipss.
Eternal Void WHAT?!?!?!?!?!!!?? HOW COULD YOU WTH BRO
My house almost burned down from a forest fire yesterday, i'm from New Brunswick and it's so dry here the provincial government had to literally put a ban on fires because the slightest spark can start a fire it's so dry.
Surprised the 1974/5 bushfires aren’t on this list. Burnt a total of 290 millions acres of land.
Boy did this video age quickly (Mendochino, Carr, Camp Fire, 2019-2020 Australia bushfires)
Not sure if I should be proud of my state having two spots on this list or concerned...Minnesota and fires... Don't forget the 1997 Grand Forks flood/fire!
I really wish that you could remember that you have international followers as well
they do number 6 was the Australian black Saturday worst fire ever 3 terrawats of power half a million hectaers
Well do something to prevent such situations...doomed vacation hope
I live in the area of #6. Temperatures hit 50 degrees Celsius and going outside, all I could see was orange sky. Some scary shit.
Also Ash Wednesday (1983 I think) should get a mention, as well as the Hazelwood Open Cut fire from a few years back.
I live only like an hour from Peshtigo and it's so weird to think that the arguably most devastating fire in all of history took place only a bit away.
The largest fire I can remember seeing in person was the 2014 LA fires that burned in the LA forest.
Seeing the damage first hand of the “Great Smokie Mountain Fire”, I have to say it was pretty bad for what it was and remaining as possibly being one of the worst in the area. Even though there was so much damage and many homes lost, in a matter of no time, the gorgeous city came back to life and was once again the most beautiful and annoying places to drive through. Once you deal with the traffic, the city thrives on even with a scar. On the brighter side, sprinklers are becoming mandatory for structures in the area.
How come I knew the Fort McMurray fires was going to be on here. That was scary I thought we were going to lose our home but we were lucky but it still haunts me plus so many trees are burned that there are very few trees that is growing leaves but at least everyone serviced
I remember the 2007 CA fires. I was lucky enough that I didn't have to evacuate because the wind made a sudden shift and blew it in a different direction. It actually went around my area.
Just watched this video after the wildfire on Maui; It’s crazy to think how it stacks up to this list.
What about the "Night of the Black Snow" in Tokyo, 1945? Sure, it was caused by an air-raid. But the winds and the many wooden houses created a firestorm, which was the main cause for the at least 75,000 people that died then.
there were some pretty large fires in Colorado especially during the 00s
What's the background music watchmojo uses in this and all their other top ten videos?
I am petrified of fire I trapped in a big 10 story Victorian pub on the top floor the floor under us was just full of timber for the fireplaces and repairs my mother was unconscious and I was 14 it was horrific thank god we got out just in time I hate fire alarms and smoke
RIP Notre Dame...
Kinda surprised the fires resulting from earthquakes weren't included; that would include the fires that devastated San Francisco in 1906, and the fires that destroyed Tokyo and Yokohama in September of 1923. In Japan's case, at least 140,000 people lost their lives, many from being burned to death.
This is a USA only list for some reason lol
@@Fondrom fires in Canada, Australia and London were also included, literally, worst fires in the West. Asian fires are even more tragic.
the fort mac fire literally started on my birthday
Nice good wideo like ++ :)
6:16 that awkward moment where you realize the origin of the software name for Nero Burning Rom.
I honestly thought the Triangle Fire would have been on here.
Me too, Not to mention it was important for very good reasons that would save more workers lives.
Yah we want more fires that started inside and not just wild fires.
they need to update this already
My mixtape better be number 1.
I remember the great Smoky mountain wildfires we saw it on 7 news and it was everywhere
Insert old mixtape meme

I'm from Miramichi and my family still tells that story like it was yesterday.
Can you do another list please since the Itifaqiyah Tahfiz Schoo fire occured on September
Guess u can add Australia’s 2019/2020 bushfires
Never really learned about the Peshtigo Fire, even though there is a marker for it south of my house.
The Wangary Bushfire of 2005, which occurred on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia burnt over 77964 hectares (779.64 square Kilometres). This bushfire started on one side of the Peninsula and burnt all the way to the other side. Wiping out 8 or so townships and killing over 46,000 livestock. Many lives were lost in this bushfire.
Australia's Black Summer 2019-2020 topped all of these, which is mad (estimated over 40-46 million hectares burned)
Also the smoke from the beast actually affected Ireland’s skies for a short while.
If this video was made after the 2020 California Wildfires, it would be on our list with the 2007 fires.
They don’t even mention the severity of the bushfires across Australia such as the black Saturday bushfires in Victoria which went for like a month and wad the largest recorded fire in all of history
The Great Kanto Earthquake. Many devastating fires were caused, the worst one in Tokyo where around 38,000 people died in a single area.
I live in fort McMurray and it seems the fire was just yesterday i remember everything that I saw but it has been over a year
1923 Tokyo should definitely be on here. Roughly 1.9 million people displaced, and 142,000 killed!
Black Saturday and ash Wednesday fires will never be forgotten in Australia.
Thank god u mentions the peshtigo fire!
My family's house electricity is old and we had to change it but we didn't . If the fan and lights are working together. You feel the ground shaking which means it will become a fire .
I was sleeping and mom screamed my name . I noticed the ground shaking . I ran . My brother did not wake up . I pulled him and ran . Nothing happened . I don't want to go there again . It happens twice every month !!!!
The greatest fire ever was

My cousin drove through Fort mcmurray during the fire and said if there has ever been hell on earth it was then.
I remember fort McMurray my house burnt to the ground as well as my grandma past due to the smoke
I also live in Victoria australia and man i was quite young but i sthill remember all of our family calling every day but i was lucky the fire didn't get close enough to burn the house to the ground so it makes me wonder what would've happend if it got to close
Where is the great fire of Ponty Pandy? When the Slim Shady LP dropped? What about Sozin's Comet and the legendary battle?

What about *Portugal´s Fires* in 2017
It devasted the entire North region of the country and Madeira island too
It was on the news everytime in last summer....
I saw the trees where the 2020 fire in Australia hit and it was bad, and nsw’s air was so bad it was the most polluted place in the world
*Insert really funny and really original mixtape joke here*
Sadly these wildfire would have been avoided if people didn't try to drop their mixtape
the fire in Fort Mcmurray is still burning in march 2017. it was only diverted. almost a year of flame.
The June 3rd disaster in Ghana claimed over 150 lives as a result of a fire outbreak at a filling station.
They should've mentioned the great Valparaíso fire
What about the Great Fire of Turku in 1827 Finland? Or the Station nightclub fire.
my mixtape should be on the list
