I've lived in both countries, the US has a more complicated federal system - but I agree they could compact it to somewhat help take the rhetoric and heat out of the campaigning (The UK politics is far less nasty than the Americans).
One reason is that the US population is roughly 5 times that of the UK population, so there are more people to sway to one candidate or another. Both the Republican and Democrat voters in the last general election outnumbered the whole of the UK.
Another reason is that the UK doesn't have to deal with the overabundance of differing rules in how elections are run like we do here in the States. Think of it as "too many cooks in the kitchen."
Lastly, the Republican party has been doing its level best to slow walk things with voting since their very founding because making it easier for people to vote makes it easier for Republican candidates to lose.

It is believable when - 1.) that person is the vice president and was endorsed by the president who people DID vote for, 2.) you have a candidate on the other side that has a ravenous base but otherwise is generally unliked, even if some put up with him anyway. It's not like Trump is some runaway popular choice. His approvals generally average around 46% There's a lot of people who just want someone that seems sane. 3.) The republican party turns off a lot of the independent and swing voters with some of their messaging choices.
Now whether the election itself will be exactly that close, who knows, but it's not unreasonable that there are some that are enthusiastic about someone who isn't a Biden, Clinton or Trump. Sometimes people just want new blood.

What difference does it make? Each party gets to decide who they want as their nominee. Period. That's how the law works. Additionally, there were A LOT of people who said the Democrats switching out the nominee was a bad idea, and they did it anyway. They took a risk and now are being rewarded (at least early on) for it. Also, when you vote for President, you also vote for the chance that the Vice President might become President.

According to the voter registration data, with 30 states reporting, on Dems vs Reps, the Dems would smoke his @ass by 9.3 million votes. We all know who the Dems are voting for...but not all republicans are going to vote for Trump. As of early this year he was only hanging onto 51% of the republicans. If we speak only for those who are currently registered (35.7 million, Trump had 43.2 million in 2020), he's only carrying 18.1 million currently registered to vote at all republicans and it's July.

The thing with all these polling numbers is that they are heavily weighted towards older, usually more conservative voters simply due to how they are held. They rarely take into account younger and particularly first time voters which would push the Harris numbers by at least 5% in her favour, if not more.

The two parties have very clear and distinct positions on everything. As it pertains to economic matters the Republicans believe in supply side economics. This entails placing most of the tax burden on the working and middle classes while giving most of the tax breaks to the wealthy and big corporations. The hope is that the wealthy will create businesses and big corporations will expand existing businesses. It is fundamentally flawed because there is no guarantee that either will occur. The wealthy are unlikely to start new business because they are already wealthy so what is the point? Big corporations are unlikely to expand existing businesses particularly when existing demand is already being met. Doing so would just cut into their bottom line. They are more likely to buy back stocks or give executive pay hikes and very little of the money reenters the economy. The wealthy get wealthier, and poor get poorer. The Democrats on the other hand subscribe to demand side economics. This entails placing most of the tax burden on the wealthy and giving tax breaks to the working and middle classes. The Democrats know that the middle class is more likely to start new business and the poor are more likely to spend while the wealthy are more likely to save. Therefore, most of the money reenters the economy and the new businesses that are formed help to create competition which is what drives prices down. That is why the economy performs better under democrats and the economic data on publicly accessible government websites validates that. Even Trump admits it in an interview while running for office the first time. You can look up the interview for yourself. You are already on the right website. I'd also encourage you to go to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis website and study some data.

Democrats used to be anti-immigration (Republicans used to be pro-immigration), Democrats used to be pro-civil rights now they support neo-racism (Republicans now are the party of non-discrimination), Democrats used to be anti-war (during the Iraq war period) now they're the pro-war party (Republicans are now anti-war isolationist), Democrats used to support the working class, now they spit on them and call them racist (meanwhile now the Republicans are talking about workers rights), etc. These issues and many more have flipped over the last 20 years or so. Neither party has any principles.
