  • why do we work sheepdogs on different sets of verbal commands or different sets of whistles?
The only reason i put different commands or whistles on my dogs is so that i can work them together doing a sheep job. the different whistles mean that i can control each dog separately
if you like this video and would like to see more explainer or training videos, then please take a look at the churchmount sheepdogs Patreon account
the different whistles that i use on my working sheepdogs, are the ones i use for their sides (their left and right hand)

great, thank you very much. I work with a Border Collie who is almost perfect with the whistle. Voice commands in Spanish. Now I have a Working Kelpie young dog. Voice commands in English (colloquial language here is a German dialect). On RUclips I was looking for ideas for other whistle commands and found you. However, I will not only have left and right, but all herding commands differently. The aim is for the two dogs to be able to separate a sick sheep at a distance and bring it to me. Do you have a video showing more different commands?

There are a few variations for verbal sides. For example, spanish, French, Welsh, norweigan, etc are an obvious and handy way to put on different variations

My 2 1/2 year old australian shepherd is herding our chickens he does amazingly but he does it without my command. I want to teach him whistles. Is it possible? He's smart as a whip but stubborn in his ways.
He does know a come here whistle which is very unique. But I at least want to teach him a stop, and left, right.

Well just teach him the verbals first and when you can see that he has them, then you could put whistles on them

I saw a fellow using a referees whistle before at trials..but if you want to work a dog at any kind of level, like with a left and right for example, you'd be better to either learn to whistle or buy a sheepdog whistle and learn to blow it
