It seems if you get close to the horn on an EST Genesis fire alarm, which I do not recommend as it can probably damage your hearing, but if you get close to it and it activates, you can kind of hear the horn making a sound following the click before it starts doing the code 3 cycle and before it starts flashing.

My high school had the same setup unfortunately. Only difference was our building was built In the early 1900s and had high ceilings. While the classrooms had acoustic ceiling tiles, the hallways were big, tall, boxy echo chambers! It was startling but bearable in the classrooms, but in the hallways it was one of the loudest things I’ve ever heard, and I’ve been to some notoriously loud rock concerts. It’s almost like the designers of the system wanted to just mildly startle people in the classrooms, then proceed to torture them as they evacuated. Only louder thing I’ve ever heard was a jerk in a modified sports car revving his engine right as we walked by his car in an echoey garage, and that actually caused pain in one of my ears for a week. Even then, It didn’t really startle me any more than the fire alarm. One plus: no horns in the bathrooms at least! My elementary school was a similar renovated early 1900s building, but I don’t remember that huge difference in loudness between the hallways and classrooms. The alarms in that building were Integritys however, and those could not sound any more different than the Genesis. The entire building was closer to the volume in my high school’s classrooms: loud enough to startle, but tame in comparison. I will say I was extremely sensitive to sudden noise in those days, so they startled me more than anything before or since.

I like EST Genesis and Wheelock Exceder LED and Eluxa. Very small in size and pack a loud punch.
