  • Director James Gray and production designer Kevin Thompson break down a few scenes from their new Sci-Fi film Ad Astra starring Brad Pitt. They explain how important it was to create a CGI world that was both futuristic and realistic by using footage of the Moon and Mars and focusing on present-day space technologies.

    Hoyte Van Hoytema, cinematographer of Ad Astra, should have been given his due credit in this scene breakdown. DOP of this movie is breathtakingly beautiful. The color grading that were kept for Moon and then Mars were exceptional choice.. I can watch it numerous times just to study the visuals!

  • @umitbulutt
    @umitbulutt 4 года назад +26

    When the first trailer came out I thought to myself Brad Pitt as an astronaut would be a bad choice (or gamble you might say) since the audience always seen him as a stereotyped character. Oh boy, when I watched the movie I was really impressed by his acting!
    Also, you have to give credit to the story. It is not a space story, it is a psychological journey that took place in space. Meaning space also became a character, in order to achieve that, amount of detail you need to add is important, otherwise it would be either overkill or unbelievably fake. Shout out to props guy. Great movie for this year.

      Agreed _Ad Astra_ is great and very underrated. But satellite falling...do you mean in the beginning ?
      Also, if you’re a PItt fan, you DEF need to see Tarantino’s _Once Upon a Time in Hollywood_ if you haven’t already. Everyone in the film is excellent, but Pitt and DiCaprio are absolutely outstanding. I never enjoyed a “buddy” movie so much, even though that’s not the point of it, and it’s not billed as such.

      Agreed, this is a thinking person’s film. I saw it as _Apocalypse Now_ meets _The Black Hole_ , with some key elements and themes of _2001: A Space Odyssey_ and _Gravity_ added to the mix.
      I bet it wasn’t easy to get this green-lighted: It’s atypical of current Hollywood fare, seeing that it’s neither an action movie nor a comedy, Rom-Com or “buddy” flick, not animated, and certainly not a tent-pole, huge-budget Disney franchise epic (e.g., MCU or Star Wars).

    • @theonlyconstantischange123
      @theonlyconstantischange123 4 года назад +4

      @@Sharky165 just saw it today and you are correct. It's next in line after 2001, contact, gravity, interstellar, etc. Sure it's a bit anti climactic being a relatively simple plot and some could complain about the noir/dreary tone....but obviously their main focus was a VISUAL experience in a HUGE and bureaucratic solar system which man, i felt really overdelivered. Forgiving that the movie is driven by "Brad does this next and it predictably goes wrong"... then you get a very exciting and detail oriented ride. obviously a person can nit pick physics but as a movie it was a great experience. It's not a complex sci fi story, its a well done ride through the vastness of our solar system.

    They pat themselves on the back for the technical accuracy of the film. Well....why is there absolutely no hint that they are in 1/6 Earth's gravity when they are inside, yet it's obvious when they are on the rovers?
    And what is this dust Sutherland is reaching up to touch while on the rover? The dust shouldn't have been there as there is no atmosphere to keep it aloft.
    There are so many ridiculous technical inaccuracies in the film I found it silly and couldn't enjoy it(eg. Pitt sneaks on the ship on Mars while it's taking off and isn't pinned to the back wall. They even have a zero gravity battle inside the ship while it continues to accelerate lol).
    Was slow as well and not as deep as I think some like to make it. I think it's they type of film that ppl can digest and be a bit introspective about which makes them feel that it is complicated than it really is and makes the average person feel good about themselves for "figuring it out".
