Description
Desi Daaru (Hindi: देसी दारू), also known as Country Liquor or Indian-made Indian liquor (IMIL) is a category of liquor made in the countryside of the Indian subcontinent. They are traditionally prepared by a procedure that has been passed down for centuries. Due to cheap prices, country liquor is the most popular alcoholic beverage among the impoverished people. It is fermented and distilled from molasses, a by product of sugarcane. Desi liquor is a broad term and it can include both legally and illegally made local alcohol. The term desi daru usually refers to legal alcohol while other types of country liquor (arrack and palm toddy) may be categorised as moonshine alcohol.
An article in the medical journal The Lancet estimated that nearly two-thirds of the alcohol consumed in India is country liquor.[citation needed] Globus spirits mentioned that India's country liquor market is about 242 million cases (over 30% of the beverage industry in India) with a growth rate of about 7% per annum. No data regarding Pakistan is available as drinking alcohol is officially prohibited for Muslims in Pakistan, although locally made liquor is sold on the black market.
Government regulation provide for a separate licensing for production, distribution and retailing of country liquor (IMIL) as opposed to Indian-made foreign liquor.
Country liquor, being the cheapest alcohol in India, is the mainstay alcoholic beverage for the rural population and urban poor. In rural areas, illicit country liquor has been blamed for domestic violence and poverty in the family. There have been several protests against country liquor shops/bars in villages.
Adulteration
As country liquor is cheaper than other spirits, there have been reports of mixing country liquor with Scotch/English whisky in many bars in India.

Great video Nilgiriji, although I would like to highlight two important points- We can definitely say that the base of desi daru and budget Indian whisky is the same but it can vary in terms of distillation and removal of impurities from distillery to distillery. So broadly it can be said that Indian whisky may have less impurities than desi daru though not always necessarily true. Now coming to premium Indian whisky and scotch whisky even if both may be grain whisky. You can only call a whisky Scotch if it's age for a minimum of 3 years in Oak barrels along with some other nuances, the same isn't true for Indian premium whisky.

1. Deshi Daru vs Cheep Indian Whisky..
I can tell you mejority of liquor company purchasing alcohol from same distillery (specially molasses based alcohol) because it comes from suger mill.. 40-45 rupees a liter is open price.. same alcohol going to deshi daru Plan as well as cheep Indian Whisky brand.. there is no seperate distillery..
2. 3 years ageing.
Yes minimum 3 years ageing is true for Scotch Whisky only not for all whisky...
Second important point is Scotch whisky need to aged for longer period because of too cold weather, where as Bourbon Whiskey or Indian Whisky not need to aged for so long..
A Scotch Whisky 15 years aged is equivalent to 4 years aged Indian or Bourbon Whiskey...
I hope it clarifies your doubts..
To add to what Nilgiri ji , I would like to tell from my perspective, this is my opinion and I am not speaking on behalf of Nilgiri ji and others, Ageing does not necessarily makes a liquor more better than a good quality non- aged liquor. These are part of the marketing gimmicks to make a liquor more appealing .

@@amitbajaj7236 I have to strongly disagree with you on this one, now it is true that ageing doesn't make a liquor better or worse but it certainly does make a whisky better. Whisky gets all its flavour and colour from being in contact with the wood of the barrels. Also the in your face character of the spirit is nulled down by the ageing so you can appreciate the complexities and flavours more. So in its essence whisky as we know it is by definition an aged spirit. If not aged technically its not even whisky but other kind of liquor.
@@nilgirikashyap Again i'm aware of the ageing in tropical areas being much faster than colder areas, also the evaporation is much faster so it can't be aged for long. But broadly we can't say 4 years is equal to 15 years of ageing in scotland because in some factors of the profile of the whisky time cannot be replaced and thus scotch malts have fundamentally different character due to the ageing, malts, weather and water differences. I understand the purpose of the videos was to educate the viewers and in doing that you broadly said there is no difference between the whiskys but just thought to point that out.
Also i wasn't aware that the molasses based spirit is acquired from the same vendors and distillery don't distill the alcohol themselves. Thanks.
