I got one of these yesterday... I'm so excited to see how it works! On a side note, your RUclips channel is so good! So clean, easy to watch... Keep doing this great work that you do! I'm really happy for getting to know more about your camera collection ❤
Thank you I’m glad you enjoy the content 😊 and I think you really enjoy this camcorder. I also leave links to batteries, chargers, tapes, and other accessories in the description of my videos if you are ever in need of any of those. I also have a link to my eBay store because I always resale the cameras I review. I like to give my viewers the first dibs on the camcorders I review 😁
I got one for free working at Best Buy, the customer wanted it recycled but said I could have it if I want, I of course accepted a free camera, nothing was wrong with it accepts for a missing roller from the tape
Congrats on the offer!! Best deal ever.....to relate, I got another Canon ES2000 a few months back completely untested with its carrying case, manual, and a couple 8mm tapes and that one works flawlessly too. I used it for tape transfers until the Sony TRV66 came along.
I have this exact camera, this must have been a pretty popular camera back in the day as I've seen it everywhere, it has everything you can ask for in a good quality MiniDV camcorder (hotshoe, big lcd, good grip, mic and headphone jack as well as a card slot capable of recording small video clips) in a very affordable package of $1200 (keep in mind MiniDV was considered a high end consumer format back in 2001 as Hi8 was still dominating the market back then)
Yeah it kind of reminds me of the canon hf g40 I used to have. A modern camcorder but I payed $1200 for it and it also had a lot of professional features in it.
It wasn't quite high end for a new camera, MiniDV & Digital8 were getting popular by then. eg: I have a 2001 catalog, it only listed 2 camcorders but (in $NZ) they were $1400 for Hi8 and $1800 for Digital8(also with more optical zoom etc), both from Sony. NZ was usually more expensive than overseas. A Feb 2002 article refers to analog camcorders "the dwindling number of models within these formats, the end appears to be near for analog camcorders."
I have a DCR-TRV70 and it has the same DC connector, battery release, power switch and the rest of that area, but the lens is basically that of their DSC F707 still camera. Unfortunatelly, the tape mechanism is bad. I can still record on my 128 MB memory stick, however that can only do 320×240. I'll try how much footage I can get on it. Love the video!
Hey quick question , I bought one of these and the tape works and camera records. But I can’t seem to find how to rewind the footage IN the camera? I don’t know if I might be doing the wrong thing and I need to go to the settings or something. New to these cameras would appreciate the knowledge spread and your time 👌 Oh and also do you NEED a memory stick I’m guessing that might be why I can’t rewind.
Make sure you are in playback mode. This camera probably has markings that says VTR or VCR. Also make sure there is a tape in the camera. You don’t need a memory stick to play back the footage
hey, when you have opened the tape compartiment how do you close it ? i’ve opened it during watching your video and now i’m scared to broke something 😭
You just push it closed. Make sure you have the tape inserted the right way. And DO NOT PUSH the tape mechanism into the camera. The camera will retract it itself. If you do your whole tape deck with be broken
Lol great review so many functions. Can you do a video of the inside and were the roller is located? My popped out and not sure where its located. Thanks!
hey! awesome video! I have one of these cameras and have a question for you, I seem to only be able to download my footage from the camera via USB in the memory mode but want to know how I can download footage from the 'camera mode' since that's the one that has all of the cool in-camera effects. Do you have any insight on this?? thank you so much in advance
Hey, great video! Having an issue with my camera in that when I load a tape and view the footage everything works fine and loads correctly, but when I place a different tape in it still shows the footage from the first tape? Any help would be appreciated !
Woah that’s a new one 🤔 that issue I’m not quite sure how to fix. When you switch the tape do you leave the camera on or do you turn it off? If you turn it off or pull the battery off before loading the other tape that might make the camera reset its self. Not that still isn’t normal but that could be a work around for that issue
@@brandoncameracollection everytime i plug a av or S-video cable, i get massive static then it shuts off with no real clear picture. do you have a solution boss? it's the DCR-TRV20.

I still have my head cleaner tape. The one thing I enjoy with these Handycams is that Lumi effect where you can superimpose stuff on the screen lol! Do you know any other handycam models with that LUMI feature?
I actually just ordered 2 more of these trv17’s haha. And no I’m not quite sure, I would assume other similar models like the trv19, trv21, etc. would probably have that feature.

Hey Brandon I recently purchased the Sony DCR TRV17 and was wondering if you'd be able to answer a question I had. I had done some recording however it doesn't seem to have saved on the SD card (not the casette either as there wasn't one in while recording). I can play the footage back on the camera however the SD card is empty. I can play the footage back while the SD card isn't plugged in either so it's somehow saved on the camcorder itself? Anyone know if its possible to record the footage onto the SD card or export it at all? Would hate to lose the content I've recorded so far. Thanks!
Hey man! Long shot here. I have this camera but the LCD is stuck in this dark setting. I can still see what I’m recording but the display is very dark and it translates to the footage. I’m not sure what I can do as far as messing with the exposure / lighting
That I’m not sure 🤔 is the exposure really dark when you look through the viewfinder? I know these old camcorders can have had capacitors but I don’t think this model specifically has that issue. If you put the camera in auto lock mode will the camera adjust the exposure?
I am interested in these types of cameras that have these minidv tape alternatives. I have heard from a few sources that you cannot actually record onto to memory stick duo. Is this true? Great video by the way❤❤
Some of the Sony camcorders you can. I’m not sure if the trv17 can though you might have to google it. But the trv22 and the pc110 can. I don’t recommend it though because the video footage is just awful and you can’t record for very long. If you record on a mini dv tape you can get 1 hour of footage per tape.

No, it won't be anywhere near as good, and is seemingly mpeg1 in 320x240(possibly lower frame rate too). I think the memory sticks were intended more for still photos(I think that's all they could be used for on other models), the cards weren't large or fast enough for DV quality at the time. One possible solution is to record to a phone with USB OTG + a suitable USB video capture device. It's a bit messy, and will likely be lower quality than DV though.
