Whatever feels good for you is the right way. There will always be backseat driver mental cases in the comments that complain about "clickbait" titles, not enough playing, too much playing, or they're butthurt that what you played in the video doesn't have tubes etc...But ignore them, they haven't created 4 of anything, let alone 4000 of anything. They have no idea the amount of time and effort goes into content creation for what little it does pay. Make the videos that you enjoy, and they'll always be good. Thanks for all your hard work, I've learned a lot and have been entertained.

Lol, a lot less time and effort than goes into most RUclips content creation … John literally just said it is stream-of-consciousness type content, which clearly it is … It’s often a meandering mess. I dare say he’d have a lot more regular viewers if it weren’t such a mess, but that’s up to him.

So many videos. When I first came across your channel I went right back to some of your earliest videos and was astonished at your expertise and virtuosity on those jazz numbers. A proper musician! Your playing has continued to evolve but the videos are less dynamic - more of the same which is not to say that's a bad thing but that, as you point out, you sound pretty much the same irrespective of which guitar you're playing. The live clips are always great and show me some sensational talent - shame about the gigs and the audiences though... What to conclude? Relax, you're doing great, or panic because you can't predict where this is going...Well none of us know the answers so I agree with you about keeping on until the wheels fall off. I see Chris Buck has realised that his live playing must take precedent over his YT channel and in his case I think that is correct. For J N C I would say you are doing great, maybe some more lessons (I would love a one-on-one lesson) some more of your true fire stuff (although I personally can't get on with online tutorials, I think it's a valid income stream), and come and do some gigs up country - The Riff Corner in Clevedon is not too far is it?

Congrats on the 4000 video milestone! Re: Beato's "an awful lot of playing in those videos" implied criticism: I've been subscribed to Beato's channel since it was merely in the thousands, and he was mainly doing music theory analyses of movie soundtracks. (His old academic home, Ithaca College, is just down the road from my house; I believe we overlapped in Ithaca, though I didn't know him then.) I still watch nearly all of his videos and enjoy them. But despite his guitar professor background, if he played as much as you do, I wouldn't be watching him. ;-) On the other hand, it's your playing that's the main thing that brings me here. There's plenty of room on YT for diverse offerings. I hope you keep the playing as a big part of your channel. You've really grown as a player and composer over the time I've been watching; I think your content choice has been great for you and your viewers, both! -Tom

I wasn't in on the convo but I think it was less criticism and more like it's unusual (and probably not great for metrics lol)...But I think for me the best way I can put it is that I'll be here mumbling away on RUclips and if people end up liking it, that's great...

Yeah, john should die his hair grey and make videos ranting about how "music today sucks not like when I was a kid!" and nodding his head while listening to Led Zepp, Guthrie Govan and Matteo Mancuso playing whilst arguing that the head nodding makes it "educational" Beato got 4 million subscribers doing that.

What's next after 4057 videos? 4058 - hope that helps! I think you're spot on with the idea that creativity is seen by some as some kind of stand in the studio and wait for inspiration to strike thing or if you need a logo for a new product all you need to do is draw 1 logo. Whereas the design team will probably do hundreds and then pare that down to 5 or 6 they'll show the client. You get people who fancy themselves as designers lamenting that the single idea they showed the client he rejected with a list of changes.
Dave Lee Roth talks at some length about what he did to do his part in the song-writing process of van halen. Which was mostly lyrics. He didn't just stand next to the mic hoping words would come to him. He kept tons of notebooks and wrote loads of stuff down if he had an idea or heard a line that he thought would make a good song etc. I mean he's perhaps not taken seriously and doesn't have the personality that you immediately think that he's going to do anything other than goof around, but he's actually smart and realising that song lyrics don't magically write themselves or come as lightning bolts, but that you have to put the effort in. Or at least most people will. If there is a guy who the gods give music to it's unlikely to be us.
Similar too for people like Gary Oldman who talks about the work he puts in to prepare for parts. Many people imagine his talent just means you can hand him a script and he could just turn up on set for a couple of hours, read the lines and the magic happens. Far from it - he's a brilliant actor because he does his homework.
Sometimes, of course, a band can jam and stuff just happens and maybe some songs can be written in a few hours. There's no real objective sense that the best songs take the most effort. Smoke on the water is pretty iconic, but it was (as its lyrics attest) a bit of a quick effort because they were running out of time. Paranoid by Sabbath is another "we need a 3 minute song to complete the album" IIRC. But most bands tend to be best in their first couple of albums because they toured and existed as an entity for many years coming up with a body of work before they got a recording contract. Maybe the 3rd album is good because they've learned how to work, maybe learned how to play their instruments better, got a better producer on board and now they have a fan base hyping it anyway. But by the 4th album they've used up most of the good stuff in that initial material and now they do have to come up with new stuff. But now their life experience is mostly drive / fly somewhere -> hotel -> sound check -> hotel -> gig -> drive or fly somewhere, rinse and repeat.
Anyway, Chris Buck has just canned Friday Fretworks, so the number of guitar players putting up snippets of tastefully created guitar music competing with yours for viewers has dropped by 1 - maybe you should post something on Friday about the same time people would be looking for FF call it "Why I will miss Friday Fretworks" in the title
    😃

Some of the best performances, by artists of all walks, have been while ad-libbing/winging it. But even they had a basic plan which they worked around. Perhaps I’m old fashioned (and old), but I believe in the saying “fail to plan = plan to fail”. And “nothing is as constant as change”.
I have been following your channel for some time now, and will continue to do so. You already have the basic foundation on which you have built a following of 126k subscribers. Keep this basic recipe and build on it/add some ingredients to change to viewers tastes and, at times, demands. You have the stats at your fingertips, manage them 😉

Like many who responded already, I really enjoy your combination of music playing, gear talk, and honest personality. That’s true too for the mix at many of my favourite RUclips channels (TPS, Anderton’s, Chris Buck - whom I miss already). Keith Williams and Rick Beato get by with less music, but in both cases their talk is more specialised (focusing on history and interviews). Your channel succeeds because of your individuality, which comes through your music and comments, woven seamlessly.

When the wheels fall off is an expression at work "they" use for me. I'm 71 and still got my wheels. Also, I am a stream of consciousness type when creating. Maybe unlike others, there is room in my loyal subscription for family content. My daughter is over 30. I've never really worked a plan. But I do work full time. A timeline and examples with photo inserts of your progression musically would be a fine direction to go. That's just my unique humble opinion. But how did you get to where you are playing wise. I mean..... I've got stories from age 2, to another at age 4, then revelations at age 7,8 & 9. My first recordable guitar which I still use. Family and artist influences along the way, how they changed me, tunes I learned. Contests I took 2nd place in never 1st and why.
That first gig. Then the first paid gig. Music and Church (maybe). 20 years later... should I take lessons?... 40 years? OK! 66 years... Meet my first private music teacher. Or... why I closed my 1st RUclips music channel. Yeah. I'd be interested in any content like that and maybe then a Patreon Membership. Trust me. At your worst, you'd be the best because I see you as authentic, and not too filtered. You weigh-in as honest, earnest and competent. I like what you do.

Maybe two per day is a bit much? Quality not quantity? Who cares what YT's best practices says, who cares about the algorithm, make yourself as proud as you can be about your content, and you won't feel like . . . like YT makes creators feel like. I've all but stopped. Been like 2 years since my last vid. I'll get it back, but I'm sure as h3ll not doing what RUclips says to do, and concentrate on my schedule rather than my integrity.

@@QuickSticks8771 I’m not even on the same boat there. I think his playing lacks any consideration for rhythm except gridlocked single note lead lines that say nothing and never end like the babbling of a toddler. Obsessing over sounding polished doesn’t help abate the boredom either. Tim pierce and this guy are the cleanest and most boring players, no coincidence. We all complain about drumming to a grid dehumanizing music; we all complain about autotuned vocals dehumanizing music; then we obsess over clean legato and only ever play unending linear strings of sixteenth notes in perfect click, thinking it’s an improvement. Bending and phrasing are what make the blues great, and ask Rick beato whether the loss of blues in music correlates with the loss of popularity of music. Take the ending of my Ween cover of The Argus. At the end when the guitars kick in, it’s the fact I’m so far AHEAD OF THE BEAT that makes the climax. These guys would NEVER have kept that take. Listen for FEEL not polishing. And as for subscribing, I couldn't possibly; his content already saturates my feed. Just because YT says to create constantly, doesn't mean it's actually what people want. There is way too much cordy in my recommendations, even without subscribing thank you very much.

I’m always inspired by all your videos and honestly I think you should start a second channel and have one channel for just playing your creative music and the other channel for your gear reviews and instructional content. Then you would get double views.
    Cheers

Acoustics. I’ve spent the last 10 years going back-and-forth between spending the bulk of my excess money on either electric or acoustics. Being primarily a home player I have focused on acoustics but occasionally I really like to play electric, but I also don’t have the money to focus on both. Maybe incorporate some acoustics into your channel.
