You might want to listen to the Metallica version of this song it hits a little harder than this one just the way the guitar sounds on the one by Metallica it pulls at your heart in some way at least that’s what it does with me
damn girl i only recently discovered your channel and new it was about mental health but what you shared there totally struck me. You are one hell of a fighter. Keep it up. Interestingly I have a similar story with accidents running in my family...
Yes my mental health issue is coming out as crossdresser or femmine male at 50 now 61still very difficult 💜 i love quirky fashion, hairstyle lipstick purple especially gorgeous red is also gorgeous 💜 and iam married just over 30 years
Interesting interpretation of the lyrics. According to Ian Gillan (the singer), "It’s just an example, for example, if you think of the phrase 'if a blind man cries' then it's pretty sad, those who are disadvantaged tend to be less complaining than those who are able-bodied." And seeing how emotional you got it's probably good you reacted to this live performance rather than the original studio version, which is far more powerful IMHO.
I've only heard a couple of their songs. Clearly I need to do a deep dive on their music. I love when a reaction introduces me to songs. Another great video Amanda! 😊
Thank you for doing this reaction to what is a very important song for me. As with many blues/rock songs the words leave enough room for the listener ti interpret them to fit their story. For you it was drunk driving for me it was my own emotional blindness and lack of self awareness. The key point is the same - being trapped inside your own emotions and being unable to convey those feelings or in my case even understand them. Good job and keep up the good work
Thanks again for the support and you are absolutely right, we use music to heal ourselves. It's our theme songs for the scenes we feel they fit the best.
Great choice, Amanda. Love your insight Ian Gillan (singer) once said about the song that disavanteged people are less to complain than able bodied people.
How fortunate that I found you and your orohect at this time. I watched the Fade to Black reaction. Simply amazing. Ive struggled all my life with depression amd addiction, with all the side affects associated with those two diseases Last two years been extremely rough. This song is me. I had my dog stolen by a guy who refused to give her back while watching her til I found a new home for her and I, after moving from my Ex. It was her friend. And she said it wasnt her problem and wouldn't help me to get her back. Im that blind man atruggling to get out unfortunately. Been a really long two years of tears, disassociation, and hospitalization. Thank you so much for being here for all of us.❤
If you haven't watched John Wick, watch John Wick. That's all that came to mind when you mention your precious dog. How awful. 2017-2018 were my two years of hell. I promise there's another side to everything. Keep searching, keep trying. Even one step in the right direction is forward movement! Here if you need to talk.
The way I interpret this song is just … plain depression. Being blind to happiness or anything positive in life. “If you’re leaving close the door -not expecting people anymore” you distance yourself from everybody, he’s probably saying goodbye to the last person who was around him…then you become numb, hence “wether drunk or dead…” -“when a blind man (blind to happiness) cries there’s no sadder tale” there’s no more hope. Then eventually the death of someone close, someone in a similar situation, gives him “a reason for the things we had to do”… therefore the songs gets more “energetic” and intense…that’s just my take. Sending lots of virtual hugs from a fellow struggler .
Ian Gillan, the singer on this, had a colourful relationship with alcohol. Once, in a bender in the early 1980s, he accidentally joined another band. The first he heard about it was when his agent called to ask why he hadn't been consulted before Ian became a full member of Black Sabbath. Ian hadn't even known he'd agreed to that, but he was a man of his word, and he liked the guys in Sabbath, so he did an album and tour with them in 1983.
Great reaction as always. Like someone said in another comment, the singer said that disable people complain less, so when a blind man cries is because something really bad happened. But like you said, what's beautiful about music is you can have as many interpretations as people are in the world. I always thought about this song that the worst kind of blind is the one that don't want to see. Sometimes you are in a self-destructive path with self-destructive attitudes, or in a unhealthy relationship, or you insist on doing something that clearly is not good for you even when you know it's not good, even when you know you're hurting your self, wether you realize how much pain you're going through or your loved ones keep asking you to stop, you keep doing it, you just can't accept the truth until finally there's a moment of illumination, an epiphany. Sometimes you stop just in time... but sometimes is too late.
The man is only blind metaphorically, he can't see the things in life that matter most. He can no longer see things like happiness or love. He only feels hopelessness and solitude.
When a Blind Man Cries Deep Purple If you're leaving close the door I'm not expecting people anymore Hear me grieving, I'm lying on the floor Whether I'm drunk or dead I really ain't too sure I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man and my world is pale When a blind man cries, Lord, you know there ain't no sadder tale Had a friend once in a room Had a good time but it ended much too soon In a cold month in that room We found a reason for the things we had to do I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man, now my room is cold When a blind man cries, Lord, you know he feels it from his soul
Thanks for this video Amanda. Deep Purple is one of my favorite bands, and you're correct - they could be considered a "vintage" group - the late 1960s to about the mid 1970s is when they were considered to be in their prime. You just watched a more recent incarnation of the band, and while Ian Gillian still sings quite well, his voice was astonishingly powerful in the 1970s. Deep Purple is perhaps best known for their songs "Smoke on the Water" and" Highway Star" from their *Machine Head* album, which are considered seminal classics of the heavy metal genre, and in their earliest incarnation was steeped in the groovy psychedelic sound that permeated the 1960s. I highly recommend listening to their songs "Child in Time" "Hush" and "Storm Bringer". I recommend hearing the studio versions of those songs before checking out the live versions. Those are 3 of their best songs that all feature different singers (Deep Purple had many different personnel changes throughout their long history).
So I just stumbled onto your page by way of your Beartooth reaction. If I could throw a recommendation out there, "Daylily" by 'Movements'. It is a beautiful song written by the lead vocalist to his GF who suffers from severe depression. An amazing listen.
He's not in a coma. The lyrics speak to being isolated for long periods of time in isolation. You begin to question if you're even still alive especially at night in the darkness. He's blind so he's in constant darkness.
A lesson to all who struggle with things not turning out how you wish it to be. For any wish, there are thousands of ways to make it a NO, but always a way to make it a YES. Don't search for a NO, search for that YES. Keep knocking on doors, if it's a NO, it wasn't the door you were searching for. That door that is a YES is still there to be found.
Deep Purple rules! I consider them as one of the three bands to invent heavy metal (along with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin). I've always considered this song as one of their saddest.
I would recommend (again) maybe listening to one/both of I mentioned yesterday, by JP Leppäluoto, even though they aren't in English (but you can find translations online). The first one "Piilevää pimeää", is about the time in his life when he was struggling, according to him, was originally going to be recorded with one of his previous bands, but he didn't feel like it was ready so he held onto it, and then 8 years later when he was writing for his solo album, he asked a friend to help him finish the lyrics. It's a simple song, really, but the words and the emotion in his voice are beautiful and heartbreaking. One of my favourite lines from the song translates as "Like a prisoner from their chains, I'm ready to be free." The second one, "Kuoppa", is also about his past, and his relationship with life, but is more about finding strength and pushing through. The translation of one of the lines is "I'd rather be with you at the end of my life, unhappy" (as opposed to ending it all).
This was the story of Purple (relationship between Gillan and the band touring non stop concerts , go to the studio ) Ritchie Blackmore the original guitar player he never played this song live and he hates this song!
Amanda, please check out the song “Rise Above This” by Seether. The singer, Shaun Morgan’s brother committed suicide, and this is a song about Shaun trying to cope with it as he himself struggled with addiction. Shaun has also founded the Rise Above organization, and Rise Above Fest to help spread awareness.

When a Blind Man Cries
Deep Purple
If you're leaving close the door
I'm not expecting people anymore
Hear me grieving, I'm lying on the floor
Whether I'm drunk or dead I really ain't too sure
I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man and my world is pale
When a blind man cries, Lord, you know there ain't no sadder tale
Had a friend once in a room
Had a good time but it ended much too soon
In a cold month in that room
We found a reason for the things we had to do
I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man, now my room is cold
When a blind man cries, Lord, you know he feels it from his soul

Hey bro, take it slow
You ain't livin' in a video
You're flying low with a high velocity
No doubt, you're stressin' out
That ain't what rock n' roll's about
Get off that one way trip down lonely street
Now I know you've been kicked around
You ain't alone in this ugly town
You stick a needle in your arm
You bite the dust, you buy the farm
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid
What ya tryin' to do
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid
They win you lose
Hey, hye, hey, hey, hey stoopid
C'mon girl, it's a better day
Get your foot out of that grave
Don't let that one love tear your world apart
C'mon babe, kick that stuff
Show the street it ain't so tough
Quit lyin' around with a crippled, broken heart
Now I know you've been seeing red
Don't put a pistol to your head
sometimes your answer's heaven sent
Your way is so damn permanent
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid
What ya tryin' to do
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid
They win you lose
Hey, hye, hey, hey, hey stoopid
This ain't your daddy talkin'
You know, I know
Your story ain't so shocking
You know, I know
Blow some steam
C'mon and scream
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid
What ya tryin' to do
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey stoopid
They win you lose
Hey, hye, hey, hey, hey stoopid
