Honestly, saying osu is a waste of time because you won’t ever be a top player is a very shallow way of looking at the game. No matter how you look at it, osu is a singleplayer game. It’s you against yourself and unless you go out of your way to engage with the community, you won’t ever touch the multiplayer part. I’m sure if you asked peppy he’d tell you that the leaderboards are there to create friendly competition but that the game was made for players to have fun.

Saying "its only for fun" does not take away the fact that it is a waste of time.
Wasting time is the act of spending time doing something unnecessary and not producing any benefit. You do not gain any benefit from playing osu whatsoever, in fact you are only ruining your physical and mental condition in the long run. Therefore, it is a waste of time.

Some days, I’ll admit that I feel like quitting because I know I can’t play as much as other players, and my improvement is slow. Honestly, nobody in the right mind would say “osu! is a waste of time” just because they couldn’t be a top player or get good at the game.
Like think carefully before you even speak. It’s not like you play the game for the first time and instantly become a top player. It just takes time and dedication and those with patience will be rewarded with their hardwork. Though, most of the time, osu isn’t just to get better at the game. In the end, it’s just a game and we’re just trying to have fun and enjoy the game.
From my POV, AryN should’ve just kept things to himself and not do anything. But for you polars, welcome back and actually good take from your video.

as the commenter said, theres an ancient video of aetrna struggling with end time, a 180bpm map, and even failing at the end. YEARS later, he dt's it. This isnt due to magic, or genetics. its due to hard work and sheer dedication.

@@BlissBee I agree, I could never have the motivation to be a top player. That shit is like a full-time job for no pay. I think one of the big issues of osu! is that grinding PP only gets less enjoyable the higher you go because harder maps need to be faster BPM. Who the hell wants to listen to cursed 300bpm music all day long?
When 7-8* sets were considered top player maps, those were actually super hype and struck a great balance between enjoyable to listen to, enjoyable to play, and enjoyable to watch. As a noob it seemed super exciting to maybe one day get there and as a long time player it was one of my most satisfying achievements to fc the maps that were once considered the crowning accomplishments of the people I looked up to when I was a noob.
Nowadays you need to slap DT on maps that were never meant to be DT'd and it's like nails on a chalkboard to listen to OR it's going to be an 11* non-dt map but it's still like 290bpm and horrific because no good artist makes music at that bpm lmao. My point is it doesn't attract many new players because noobs probably can't even register what is going on at those difficulties, and music does infact have a speed limit that can't be surpassed.
To each their own though, some people don't care about the music and just really enjoy the competitive aspect of osu and climbing the leaderboards. Personally I couldn't care less and I just like tournaments with 6-7* map pools loaded with bangers or playing the same masterpiece of a map that i've already fc'd like 20 times because it's just that fun.

About the genetics topic you mentioned, I think that it isn't so much genetics that can change how you improve, although that does play a part, the main factor that differentiates those who improve at the game and those who don't are the habits and mindset that one develops when first playing. If you're the type of person to naturally enjoy pushing your limits a bit by bit and gradually increasing acc and lowering miss counts on maps that you would have a hard time with when first trying them, this will let you improve far, far faster than someone who just plays a map once and moves on. This natural preference about how you play the game is far more important to whoever has better genetics, but it's usually not a determinable mindset, especially because new players usually aren't joining the game thinking "what mindset will let me improve the best?" Those who can force themselves into this mindset and these habits will usually get less enjoyment out of them than players who naturally are have them from the start, and that's what a lot of people mean by "genetics."

@@sharkgamer47 the fist try or nothing sentiment is quite horribly for improvement, take aetrna for example, he has thousands of retries on the same few maps and by playing them that much he acquired muscle memory for them, thus letting him push his limits. To be able to fc first try is good for constancy but bad for improvement. Ideally you would want to be able to eventually fc the maps you grind, but that's not always the case.

This is partially what anyone means by genetics in basically anything. Is the kid just a natural at dribbling the ball or is his approach to dribbling different. Ultimately it doesn't matter because even if he told you step by step his thought process and mentality towards doing it, it would be crazy hard to emulate. Some natural playstyles are really bad for improvement, and improving those might be beneficial. But what works for an individual (for fast and steady improvement) and finding it is like trying to solve a fucking invisible puzzle. That is to say so fucking hard you might as well chalk it up to genes or talent or something.

I had grinded low ar, aim control, HD for years at that point and it literally only paid off after I stopped playing for like a year and something just reset in my brain. Before that it was mindblock after mindblock mixed with some very occasional successes.

I never would've gotten to 4-digit if I had watched that video as a 5 or 6 digit and taken it to heart, that's all I really have to say on that matter. I played osu! for almost a decade, was never talented or anything but I loved the game and improved gradually over the course of my time playing, eventually I found other ways to spend my time and slowly stopped playing... but... the thing is; I took skills from osu! into my new endeavors, I started playing league and I came into it with a solid advantage over other new players as I had the hand-eye-coordination, aim, nerve control, reaction time, etc, from osu! which would've taken me years upon years to develop to the same degree if I hadn't ever played osu!...
Of course, if I had been playing League instead of osu! that whole time I probably would be a bit better... but... I also never would've had those amazing experiences and I never would have met all those amazing osu! ppl, and I can't say I'd take that trade-off if I had the choice to go back.
I'm better at League today than I ever was at osu! and the same will probably go for OW2 and Valorant now that I'm picking those games up, but life isn't just about being as good as you can at whatever you do, it's about enjoying your precious time on this stinky lil blue rock in space, nobody is going to remember if I got to the top 100 or whatever in some long forgotten videogame, but when I'm on my deathbed I'll remember how much fun I had getting there and that's what makes it worth it to me.
Life isn't always a straight path.

In the past 5 years the skill requirement to get into 3 digit alone become higher and higher and in the last 2 years alone the skill demand for player to reach 4 digit alone is already high and the map variety become very very huge. It seems ayrn is more of a good case of disgruntled player getting mad at people good at the game depend which skill specialy some player have despide being stuck in 4 or 5 digits for so long which is why he made that rather condensending opinion about 5 digit player which mark my word in the next 5 years if this game still survive that long, you will see 5 digit to late 6 digit (close to 5 digit) as more of mid game and the 7 digit going to be deem as medium skill set, getting 4 digit at that year going to be hard and you can't even depends on luck that much anymore.

I play osu for fun, even though I'm dog shit at it... I know I'm not gifted but, I still think that's a way to improve mentally (due to the dedication put into the game), as well for reflex (I don't know if it's placebo, but ever since I started putting more time into it, I tend to be calmer on stressful situations and have better reflexes). In the past, I tried playing many FPS games and trying to be consistent, but I couldn't (not comparing any FPS game with OSU)... It's different with Osu, as it looks linear and, you have a clear "vision" of what to improve, which is different than other games. I think AryN was just frustrated by trying and people who put less time into it were better, tbh that happens to all of us.

If your goal is to become the best, it probably won't happen, and it'll cost you a lot of your personal life and time. But if your goal is just to improve yourself, and have fun, well that's a very reasonable motivation.

Not an osu player, somehow managed to come across this video, so heres my take. Esports is a plague to modern gaming. This isn't for kids, do whatever you want, yall got the time, reaction time and ability to learn/improve at an insane rate us older guys cant do anymore. If you are an adult and you've spent thousands of hours on trying to improve, hey keep going, but be reasonable. If you have fun in this hobby, by all means. Its a video game to have fun, if you enjoy climbing ranks keep at it. But don't put in hours that will destroy your life outside the game please and don't expect to go pro.

This is a very weird take as you can say the same exact thing about anything in life. You will never be the best at this and that because there will always be someone better than you. However, that's not the point. I think that people DON'T start playing osu with the mindset of becoming the best in the first place. They just want to click circles.

If you only want to play a video game because of the goal of being one of the best at it, then you're doing it wrong. If you wanna be the best at it for financial benefits, you're doing it thrice as wrong as personally I do stuff way easier and probably earn way more than mrekk (cause the peak price potential of osu is pretty much just minimum wage), so doing it for money is extreme 8th grade behaviour. Generally speaking osu drama is always just extremly silly because its literally a bunch of teenage kids arguing about a circle clicking game. And I hate to break it to all the kids reading this, but kids as a collective are very stupid (and that's ok) and every sane adult agrees on that.

from this video, there's an argument I find interesting, which is that you'll likely never make it to the top, unless you have a great mindset. I firmly believe that osu! is not at the point where even if your entire life goal was to become the best at osu!, but you're 25, you'll never make it (however, mrekk and definitely ivaxa are closing this gap very quickly). osu! hasn't been around as long as popular sports, like soccer, so the skill ceiling is not as fleshed out. However, there's definitely other things that can hinder your ability to make it to the top, such as for example, acting rehearsals, sports practice, or unfinished art projects, and these things can totally prevent you from becoming a top player, that is if you have all of that happening and you have the mindset of being a top player.
the takeaway here is, I believe that top players are only top players because they have a ton of free time, and they are more used to things moving faster (this is an argument of nurture, and not nature, so it's not genetics), hence the reason top players are extremely young. If anyone wants to give their opinion about this, feel free to reply.

  • @luckfire

I feel like their entire argument is just their own personal mindset, and honestly, I can understand it; but that's not to say it isn't a toxic mindset. There will *always* be someone better than you, at anything, and everything. Let's say you are the best now, someone could still always come along and become "the best". Instead of comparing yourself to others, try improving yourself and finding your own way to enjoy the game instead of being "the best". If your enjoyment of the game is competitive, instead of spending that time bashing on yourself, figure out a positive way to improve at the game and become "the best" if not "one of the best".
I feel like their argument of "go play something else osu is a waste of time" is also contradicting, seeing how whatever you play, the same logic can apply. It's a really shallow way of looking at things and just.. honestly ruins your own mentality of self improvement when you start comparing yourself to others and saying "you'll never be the best".
To me it's never been about becoming "the best", it's always been about improving and enjoying the game while I'm improving. Enjoy the game, improve in the process, that's my mindset for *any* game, not just osu!.

I didn't know people this insecure existed. If your entire sense of value in playing osu! comes from how you compare to other players, then yes -- you should quit the game, no doubt about that.
I just click circles because it's a fun fucking activity to do in my free time. Sometimes I climb the rankings and sometimes I don't. If I'm not enjoying myself I just turn the game off and go do something different.
"But what if it's someone's passion??". If someone is passionate about the game THEN THEY DON'T GIVE A SHIT HOW THEY COMPARE TO OTHER PLAYERS. If your passion is climbing the ranks, you're not even playing the game -- just constantly drowning in frustration and disappointment. If you can't see that you're literally mentally ill.

I play osu! to waste some time. I mean, we all play games to waste some time. Some of us just want to enjoy the joy of clicking circles. And some of us may be even realize that we would never reach the top, and that's okay. On the contrary, isn't trying too hard to be the best on a circle clicking game to a music beat while coping that most of the players will never reach the top a waste of time?
