Yeah find this rather funny from a somewhat new players perspective. Started playing near the end of 2020. Not gonna lie I've sort of just always been bad in my own unique way. Can't go through a farmer stage if I don't know how to farm. I enjoy alt and tech maps and never got the hang of tablet and as such main mouse. On top of this I've been full alt since I started playing, simply because I couldn't even single tap doubles when I started. I'm currently 84k rank despite these various setbacks. On a side note imagine being able to stream, (cries)

I'm a bit more old school, in that I started in 2014, but the biggest thing that wasn't covered was the community aspect. I really enjoyed spending hours talking with random people by pressing F9 and finding 1000s of people online. It really opened my eyes to the world finding countries I never knew even remotely existed. I made a lot of friends through it and have seen many fly exceptionally high up in the ranks, even though I was there in the multiplayer lobby their first day of playing. The game was way different back then with streams barely being a thing and videos being almost completely gameplay. I miss those times not for the gameplay, but the community being a lot more interactive and personal. The tech map thing is true, but also I've come to accept farming as a good thing. It brings people to the game and is arguably the biggest map pool for people to choose from. I used to despise farming as it seemed almost as if it was cheating abusing the rank system, but as the years have gone on. Now I see its place and the maps have gotten more creative. I was able to hit 4 digit in 3 different game modes and I consider that an achievement. Not for the number, but the fact I knew I could do it and for so long tried in vain. It was very satisfying, but the amount of time and investment needed to improve to get to that higher level isn't worth chasing to me. I like to hop on and have a default game to play when I'm not up to using brain power or don't have any else in mind. Good video and glad content has evolved into more than mostly gameplay.

I just made it to 5 digit, currently around rank 98k. Took me years to get here (first started osu in late 2017), though, as I've gone through many phases of inactivity. I definitely can understand the whole cycling between pp farming and tech playing for fun, though. You pp farm until it becomes really hard to gain rank because of the pp weighting, and then you relax and play tech for a while, getting better as you do, then eventually you realize you've improved a lot and can get better scores on harder maps. You get some new top plays and gain a lot of pp until you can't gain anymore, and then the whole thing repeats. Every time you go through the cycle, though, you get better, and gain new skills, like streaming, speed, finger control, etc., and over a long process you slowly get better.

Since playing Halo let me know I'm not Kirito, I went into OSU expecting to never improve. Surprisingly though, I picked up mania and actually managed to S rank some 3 star maps after a year of dedicated practice. A half year later and I could only barely pass a few select 4 star maps and I just burnt out. Figured I've given the game enough of my time and dropped it for another 6 months.
I came back recently to see how trash I am now and I can S rank the hardest 2 star maps but only A rank the 3 star ones. I think it's a pretty good spot to leave my skill.

Nice vid, for me it was true until the reaching 5 digit part. I had a friend who was around same rank as me and he was rly good at streams so I got jealous, then Isaw the world cup matches and said "I wanna play in tournaments as well!". Then I started gaining skillset and stopped farming for 2 months. After those 2 months I lost motivation to play tournaments and kept farming until 60k then I cycled through all of this again and today I am a 50k tournament player with 2 speedcup wins :> (I started 18 months ago)

You know what's funny? I'm a 6 digit yet have gone through the "osu hipster" phase. When I started the game, I definitely was a farmer and farmed my way up to top 500k in like 3 days of playtime. But then I hit a skill wall and started to stagnate for 5 months as I couldn't improve (at the time my acc was horrible, that was the reason why I hit a skill wall). I watched for 5 months as I watched my rank painfully decay to around 480k (every now and then I would gain a bit of pp which is why I didn't decay out of 400k). During this time period, I understood that my acc was so bad I couldn't get anywhere but wasn't really willing to put in the effort so then I decided to finally try and "enjoy the game" as everyone said you should do in osu. And yeah I did, my playcount didn't actually dip durastically (I think the lowest playcount I reached during this period was 1000 playcount in February) as I was playing maps I enjoyed. Finally after months of playing osu without getting anywhere, I noticed I was improving, In February I was able to pass my first 7 star, something that I had been trying to do since January (oh yea for context, I'm talking about this year, 2022) and low 5 stars were now fcable. Finally, In March, I had gotten my first 5 star fc in March, my first fc milestone I reached in months (my first 4 star fc was in October of 2021). My acc had improved and I was gaining ranks. The rush from fcing my first 5 star marked the point where I enter my "farming phase" where I was consistently gaining ranks. I'm still in this phase and 1 and a half months after my first 5 star, I got my first 6 star fc in May 5th (literally 3 days ago at the time of writing this comment) which was also my first 200pp play. Yesterday, I got my second 200pp play on a choke on the 2nd to last diff of kimi no bokuen and now I am rank 160k.
Sorry for the super lengthy comment, Just wanted to share my experience so far as an osu player. Thank you for reading!

when i first played osu in 2017 i just randomly found out about osu from some random in the internet saying you can get good aim by playing osu. i tried playing it for like 2 weeks and i quitted. in december 2020 i decided to give it another try and just farm my way to 5 digit 98k rank in 2 months and then i started to hit a wall, which now i played offline to quote on quote "Improve" 5 months later i actually went back to my old play and i think "damn i actually improved". i setted like 3 300pp offline which i actually think was impossible at the time. and now trying to play double time on the maps i played 2 months prior of getting back to the game which is those AR9 farm maps and i actually can get decent score. this video actually pretty relatable on some part for me

I've never really been a farmer in the sense that I never really enjoyed playing "farm maps" I went for pp on maps I thought were engaging, challenging, and fun overall. I started playing before farm maps were really a thing the way they are today. Around my peak I fractured my wrist and had to spend a couple months without the game, and when I came back I had multiple tablet issues as well as just having to grind again because of the lost time due to injury. That happened like 5 years ago and now I'm just a super casual that just gets on to enjoy the maps I've grown to love for the most part. I think the fact that most of what I see/hear about osu today is just speed or jump maps keeps me from wanting to engage with newer content.

This is honestly wrong from the start for me, I gave up playing competitively years ago when I discovered my ping was too high for online FPS and Minecraft PvP (pre-1.9) to get anything good out of it, so osu! has been more of a game about playing cool maps and seeing if I can pass a higher-star map than I could before or trying figure out how to hit this pattern I keep missing. Really the one thing that's very accurate is the fact that I have no friends who even have an interest in the, even though a few like anime.

I related pretty well to this. I started off only playing in multi-lobbies. Then found out what pp was right before I became 5 digit so I HDDT farmed my way into 5 digit. While I was 5 digit I just kept setting better plays getting 90% accuracy on most maps. Rank 50k, I started focussing on accuracy and streaming and felt so hardstuck so I just tried to ‘enjoy’ the game with tech maps. After a while I HDHR/HDDT farmed my way till around 13k. I was so desperate after failing my first 400pp play so many times and pushing 4 digit that I slowly stopped playing. Now we’re here, I occasionally hop on, but only play one or two maps until I close the game again. No progression for the past 2 years

I am happy that i finally managed to get off this game. The community is toxic af and overall its just a speedrun into depression and hand-injuries.

  • @vaarka7534
    @vaarka7534 Год назад

Pretty accurate. My journey was basically a year of struggling to improve, then suddenly improving a ton, and then putting my focus into achieving self-made goals (I didn't really know what farming was). After two years, I got a tablet and discovered how easy it was to farm DT, so that was my peak stupidity stage. Had a harsh fall by the end of my third year. Was stuck in a rut with no way out until halfway through my fifth year, when I started to randomly pick up some skill again. Between years 5 and 6, I was at my peak, not playing to farm, but playing for my own self-made goals again. I was FCing tons of maps I'd always wanted to and quickly improving. Then life got busy going into year seven, and before I knew it, I was rusty. I'm over halfway through year 8 now and have been in that last phase you talked about where I just randomly play the game from time to time. I'd love to someday get my skills back, but life is even busier now. I'm not a teenager anymore, I'm done with university, I have jobs now, and that last phase has a strong grip on me. If I ever break it, I'll let you all know lmao...
Oh and yeah I went through a hipster phase of "boo farming sucks" between years 3 and 5. Once I began improving again, I realized the key to enjoying the game was to stop caring about how others play and to play for yourself lmao. Believe me, pretending that pp farmers suck and that you're better for not playing "farm maps" is not a unique personality, and nobody gives a shit how you feel about it. Play what you like, and let others play what they like.

That's pretty accurate since I'm somewhere at the platou probably, but when watching this video I was like ' Yeah i did that, and that too' maybe not 100% true to everyone but yeah, right now playing since 2015 and trying to enjoy the game, helping mappers other community members, I just love how many good moments I had and many friends got. Quite nostalgic sometimes

I think there is one thing that should be added in the video. And that is the long break from Osu! until you comeback to it, you see yourself being better, your confidence sky rocketed the Earth Atmosphere, so you decided to intensively play the game for days and hours without touching grass just to get depressed cause you just faced a wall that you can't surpass and now repeating the cycle of taking another break just to do the same thing again

it's hard to go entirely without farming because those maps are just staring at you in the face saying "free pp" so once every so often you give in and gain a shit ton of ranks all at once and mannn does it feel good. then ofc you go back to tech maps once youve maxed out your current pp potential and get annoyed as hell until the cycle repeats

I despise how accurate it is. But how much? Well, I cannot even quote anything from the video that was false in my case, even the time periods, maps, and PP amounts were right.... Although I feel like I'm regaining that magic now (?). I feel like I'm building up for the second season of osu in my life after having played only 750 maps in the past 2 years exactly, often with there being 0 plays for 2 months in a row with 9 plays in between, and occasional 70 and dropping down by 200.000 ranks, I feel like my third osu eye just oppened and I'm starting to really get back into this game with completely alien to be before mindset (that's also why youtube recommended me this video I guess)

I guess I'd be classified as a perma hipster? I look down on anyone farming pp and have never actually cared about the rank, but at the same time I don't try to get good at tech maps or anything. I played a lot in highschool I guess, but nowadays I just play every once in awhile since osu is a fairly therapeutic game to play when I get stressed out.

Come back: Enjoying game and having fun, also beatmapping.
2 months later: PP farm for 1 day, gain total 450-600pp.
After 1 day pp farm: back to mapping.

  • @phantomlock8015

Back when i first learned what 6-5-4 digits were I decided that I wanted to at least get to 5 digit just to see if I could. I did recently get to 5 digit and immediately lost interest in farming and ranking up on purpose. But I still have fun with the game, whether it's dt, hd, hr, failing to play ez, or the many hours I dumped into laser just messing around with mods there. Point is that osu is a game, and games are supposed to be fun. If you like farming, climbing ranks, and having 98-99% acc as an average, then go ham chief. If you like playing finger control/tech maps with anywhere from 72-86% acc then you do you too. there's no right way to have fun in osu. So enjoy all the hours of tapping your clicky keyboard to the beat of harumachi clover or to galaxy collapse.

Until this point I have not managed to reach a 5 digit rank, despite playing from 2017. However I still enjoy the game, and playing it for fun, 'cause I know that if I would start pp farming, than I would not see the game as one of my all-time favourites. I know, I know I am addicted to clicking circles, but after all that is what this game is about isn't it?

Relatable as a CtB player. Peaked #293 (at least, don't remember if I got a bit higher) then just came back some times here and there. Now I'm like #770 and lot of things changed: mapping style, pp farm style, star rating, etc. And after this peak I started playing mania and then, same as for CtB, I stopped playing.
Now i have lot of inactive month and some times for one month I have an increase in play count then back to inactive and so on

    1. didn't start because of fps games (but started after seeing a 50 map marathon with subs on one of my fav youtuber's side channel)
    2. from 2016 and till today i still play for fun, i do try s/ss my fav maps but again, i do it for fun
    3. i will never buy a tablet, mouse go brrrrrrr
    4. somehow skipped the mount stupid
    5. i do not watch a hell lot of replays and try to redo them
    6. oh, almost forgot that i do not pp farm
    7. i know that i'm bad, but i will get better
    8. forgot to tell that until recently(about a month ago) i only played osu!catch
    9. i can try beating a 7 star map, but i will probably fail after 3 seconds
    10. i am indeed playing for fun, that's how i started and that's how i will keep playing
    11. even if i started playing in 2016 i started playing a lot only recently
    12. this vid is actually really interesting, because i've seen where a path of grinding would lead me, still, i'm glad i didn't take that route
    13. also, if you find my account, do not trust the "time played"
there was no internet because of the war so a lot of hours aren't there

Okay funny enough I actually started osu because one of my online friends knew I really liked mobile rhythm games and was good at them - I've played bandori, arcaea, voez, etc. - so he suggested I try out osu. I actually had never known what it was before and when I started looking into it I recognized it from a few random clips I'd seen. Absolutely got caught up in top 50/100 knockout videos, vaxei caught my eye, I had a small addiction to it before I even started playing myself. When I downloaded it I chilled for like a month, came back to it and it's been a little less than a year and now I have both osu and osu lazer on my laptop and have probably gathered close to a thousand hours on both combined. Cheers and looking forward to the next few years of my addiction lol
Also I played mouse for about 2-3 months before stopping around the 3* mark and buying myself a tablet, got up to 4* and bought myself a new one and proceeded to gift the old one to an irl who plays, my new one was a piece of shit despite being supposedly pretty good but thankfully my irl had bought a new tablet themselves so brought my old one back to me. About to break into 5 digit and hoping to start playing 7* maps soon lol, unfortunately no 200pp yet though

Bruh how is this so accurate? Like the first 4 minutes is me exactly, the only major difference is that I started grinding burst/stream maps instead of tech (currently I'm trying to play longer maps while also dt farming lol). Like everything is so accurate, playing multis early on, streaming in discord vc, wtffff its like so close to my experience. Also I think getting into mapping songs you like is a great way to keep things fresh.
