Thank you for the tips! I am currently writing an indoor show for our drumline to use next season, and I have been stuck with how to transcribe and write the parts for the show. It’s post apocalyptic, based off of a song that I really love. So this has helped me a lot to speed up the transcription process.
I believe you’re talking about the old musescore. The new musescore does flams perfectly fine. The playback is decent and you don’t have to place a tie like you had to in the old version. And I’m also talking about musescore drumline which specialises in the flams and adds a variety to music intended for drumline.
I use Sonar (cakewalk) for sequencing VDL, and I can set resolution for grace notes to whatever I want, usually about 8 “ticks” on a 120 ticks per quarter resolution. And that velocity tool in grid (piano roll) view is fantastic! But I also use Finale to engrave and print parts because it just looks nicer.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who painstakingly input every singular note, articulation, and dynamic marking before playing every part to ensure its pedagogically sound. 😂❤❤❤❤
When I get out of highschool I kinda wanna get a group to play chickenz and demons just thought I’d let you know that you’re posts inspire me as a tenor player!!
I hope you've gotten better at Finale. SO Many things are easier if you use Speedy Entry tool rather than simple note entry, especially when writing percussion parts. For example, the tuplet tool is unnecessary if you just use Speedy Entry. Press Option.and the tuplet value (ex. Option 3 for triplet, option 6 for sixtuplet, etc) and enter the note values that you want (from 1 to 8, 128th note to double whole note, 16th note is 3, quarter note is 5, whole note is 7). Anyway, just thought I'd share that with you. I'm a retired Marine Musician and the courses at the School of Music offer a lot of Finale training, but of course you know the D&B don't go to those courses.
So glad I switched to Sibelius years ago rather than just dealing with finale, so many less bugs especially when trying to do things like tuplets and copy/paste. Also makes it easy to integrate vdl and manipulate flam sound and velocity right in the score as you write
So I don't use Finale, I use Sibelius. But it looks like you may be grabbing the wrong flams when you copy paste those triplet sections. So if you grab the wrong flam and try and paste it into that beat, the software converts that 64th note that the flam takes up to beat one and try and convert the rest of it to weird stuff to compensate.
Great video EMC. From a music standpoint, when you are writing battery parts, what do you listen for to determine what works best musically when you're layering parts into an ensemble with winds or front ensemble?
I start by trying to understand the fundamental Groove that I'm trying to right. Like what is the groove of the song, How does it go, what's the feel? And then I try to convey that with the battery parts. I usually have quad or bass parts in my ear before I have snare parts. When I first started writing battery music, I had a tendency of just making the snaring quad part play in unison. But there's a lot of room for exploration when you have them kind of playing back and forth sometimes, not necessarily by playing the same part, but playing rhythms and *accent patterns* that complement each other.
It’s interesting to see your process for arranging compared to my own. To be fair, I’ve only written for other groups, never a group of a dozen of myself lol
I’m so happy you made this video, so is virtual drumline just a program you put compatible sheet music from another program in and it will play the midi or is it’s own writing Program
I am notorious for not checking my parts comfort level before handing them out. "What do you mean you don't know what you were trying to write for that measure?" "Listen, I wrote this at 2am"
Usen speedy entry tool, permite hacer con el teclado del notebook desde las acciacaturas hasta las divisiones irregulares (tresillos, quintillos, docillos, etc). De lo contrario, van a estar escribiendo tan lento como en este video.
I joined my school's marching band this year... I suggested a new cadence. They liked it. They really liked it. They want a new cadence from me every year. any tips?
Unless it's your goal I'd say make originals instead of making it off songs. Sometimes it can help getting a groove through a drumset if you don't have access to marching percussion. And overall I'd say go for things that are more groovy and catchy than complex and aw inspiring as my drumline especially the basses just kinda threw out the harder stuff as we already have to learn show music. But it's really up to you. It's all about experimentation. If you listen to other things you will usually end up copying it so I usually mess around with my own thoughts instead.
@@kole2993 Thanks for the advice . This year the cadence we have is a combination that I made of jig2 and our old one, and everyone really likes it. So for next year I'm going to try to make an original one and make sure it sounds really funky, and something u could dance to
Eric I genuinely do LOVE your videos and you are such a fantabulous drummer/human, but I literally want to pay you to get a higher quality camera to shoot with (along with some lighting tools haha). You should start a Kickstarter or somethin' o_o
Dang, do you MANUALLY place each note into cubase? I always figured you did Finale notation first, export MIDI, import MIDI into Cubase, etc etc. Also, have you sent any of this to B Mike? Wonder what he'd think of it lol. Would be cool to see you stream this kinda stuff too.
@@mjohns908 It's made by the same company as Cubase, I like the workflow and there are some annoying bugs with Sibelius that bugged (haha) me so I switched.

What the best way to write bass splits without it coming off as just random drums hitting?
You don’t
Think of the bass line like a bass guitar playin MUSIC... then divi it up accordingly!
Think of melodies that match the (somewhat) music, and/or match the patterns and accents the snares or tenors have.
Think of it as a run. Go up and down the staff.
